Pope Francis at G-7 Warns AI Risks Becoming 'Lethal Weapon'

Pope Francis said AI is “fascinating and terrible” at the same time, making it necessary to reflect on the matter in a way that is cognizant of the technological advancement seen so far. “AI is first and foremost an instrument,” he said. “Benefits or negative consequences will depend on how it is deployed.”
The Pope particularly opposed “lethal autonomous weapons” and called for a ban on them, calling for greater human control. “No machine should ever choose whether to take someone’s life.” He added that politics played a key role in prioritizing long-term decision making and that it was its responsibility to create the right conditions for AI to help human kind.
