Global News One day after being elected as Toronto's new mayor, Olivia Chow held a press conference on Tuesday, revealing her first steps in the city's top job.
Chow says before meeting with councillors and City staff, she will first be meeting with deputy mayor Jennifer McKelvie to ensure a “smooth transition” and to pick her brain about what problems she believes are top of mind for Torontonians.
"One of my first tasks is to listen and to learn and to look for ways we can work together to achieve our public goals," Chow said.
Aiming to make new immigrants feel as welcome as possible, Chow also emphasized that one of her primary goals is to build more housing across the city and have it become more affordable.
In a race that saw a staggering 102 candidates, the former NDP MP won the race Monday night by nearly five points in a surprise turnaround, earning 37.2 per cent of the city’s vote. The 66-year-old was the first Asian-born woman to be elected a city councilor for Toronto in 1991 where she served for more than a decade.
