Gone Fishing. The quest for the next sunstone finds us in the middle of a Mark Twain novel, with Penny falling foul of a conman and losing all she's found so far. T-Shirt, meanwhile, is undergoing a teenage existential crisis which results in him refusing to do the vacuuming, throwing a strop, and jolly well going fishing instead. Where is the next sunstone, and who is going to get their hands on them now that there's a load up for grabs? This episode was originally broadcast on Monday, 27th January, 1992.
There are a few actor connections to other shows from the same writers to list here: Peter Banks appeared in three episodes of Mike and Angelo, while Helen Horton (sadly no longer with us) played Karen's mum in Spatz. According to the High-T website, both went on to appear in the single series of Polterguests in 1999. Them aside - and it's not often they had three guest stars - I spent the whole episode looking at the young lad, thinking, "I know him, I know him..." The name Simon Fenton on the end credits didn't ring any bells, but after looking up his IMDB, it turns out that he was one of the three children on the quest in Look and Read's brilliant Through the Dragon's Eye. We did that one at school, and I've got very fond memories of it.
Anyway, the spooky denouement in the graveyard is well crafted, but the highlight for me is the subtle revelation that T-Shirt sleeps in a basket. It's those sort of blink-and-you-miss-them gags that make re-watching these shows so worthwhile. And as per normal, the dialogue is as snappy and clever as ever. "I've seen ski-slopes shorter than that face" is one that I intend to use some day, if only the opportunity would present itself.
Look out for some Children's ITV continuity at the beginning and end, presented by Tommy Boyd. The way the recording cuts out hilariously makes it sound like he's taking a cheap shot at his old Wide Awake Club mate Timmy Mallett's artistic prowess.
Many thanks to Grant for providing this recording.
