Putin threatens a "global catastrophe" if NATO and Russian forces clash. North Atlantic Treaty Organization troops fighting with Russia would result in a "world disaster," according to Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia.
More than seven months have passed since the Russian leader authorized the "special military operation" against Ukraine in late February. In the months before the invasion, the relationship between Ukraine and NATO became a source of dispute between the Eastern European countries, with Russia emphasizing its desire that Ukraine not grow too close to the West or officially join NATO.
Due to corruption concerns, the danger also coincides with Ukraine's application to join NATO, which has been rejected by Western officials, including President Joe Biden. Ukraine's entry into the organization might prompt a NATO reaction to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which Russian authorities have predicted would culminate in "World War III."
Putin escalated his anti-NATO rhetoric at a news conference on Friday, calling any NATO military conflict a "destructive move."
"In any event, bringing soldiers into close contact, or outright battle, with the Russian army, is a dangerous move that can cause a worldwide disaster. I hope individuals who discuss it have enough common sense not to take such action, "he stated.
After Russia illegitimately acquired Ukrainian territory in late September, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced preparations to propose that his country's NATO candidacy be advanced. However, NATO's acceptance of its membership remains improbable. A NATO membership for Ukraine would force its members to protect it against Russia, thus igniting a war between the alliance and Russia with far-reaching repercussions.
