EU vote: Bulgarian social media abuzz with insect ingredient rumors but fears are unfounded

AFP News Agency After the European Commission authorized the marketing of foods containing cricket and beetle larvae in early 2023, rumors about the measures began to swirl.
Some viral posts in Bulgarian alleged the new ingredients would be hidden from the public, while others said they could cause cancer.
However, AFP journalist Rossen Bossev explains that EU legislation requires that foods containing insect-derived ingredients must be appropriately labeled. Experts also told AFP that there is no evidence to suggest that chitin, a substance found in the shells of insects, could cause cancer.
