POWELL as a Family Name Meaning and Origin

This interesting name has two possible origins, the first being from a patronymic form of the early medieval Welsh personal name "Hywel." In Welsh it is rendered "ap-Howell" or "Hywel" and means "son of Hywel." Eventually, these two elements contracted to form the surname "Powell," and the surname Roger ap Howell, alias Powell, who was named Powell in a 1563 lawsuit, is the first recorded modern form of the surname. The second origin of the Powell surname comes from the patronymic form of the surname "Paul," derived from the Latin "paulus," meaning "little," which appears in Langlands' "Piers Plowman" of 1367 under the name "Powel." One James Powell went to Virginia on the "Thomas and John" in June 1635; the "Dictionary of National Biography" has entries for 27 "Powels. Among them is Professor Baden-Powell (1796 - 1860), whose son was Congressman George Baden-Powell (1847 - 1898), father of Colonel (later Lord) Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Scout and Guide movement. Colonel Baden-Powell defended Mafeking from Boer forces for 217 days in 1900, using "Boy" Scouts as his correspondents. The surname of Philip ap Howel was first recorded in the "Radnorshire Charter Rolls" of 1285, during the reign of Edward I, known as the "Hammer of Scotland" from 1272 to 1307. Surnames became necessary when the government introduced personal taxation. In England, this was known as the poll tax. Over the centuries, surnames in all countries continued to "evolve," often creating surprising variants from the original spellings.
