For English viewers:
Once upon a time there was a woman who lived by the Tormes in Spain. She gave birth in the river to a beautiful baby boy, who she named “Lazarillo de Tormes,” after the river in which he was born.

Over the years, Lazarillo grew from a wee babe to a hearty young lad.
Let’s meet the family!
His mother: you’ve already met her. She was the pregnant one.
His stepfather: a bit of a kleptomaniac.
His half-brother: not much different.

In the village, not very far away, lived an old blind man. Every day, he sat by the street and begged for alms, often drawing the derision of many of the town’s citizens. Occasionally, he would trick people out of their hard-earned money by pretending he could read their fortunes.

Lazarillo’s family was very poor. With a stepfather in jail for theft and a stepbrother constantly up to no good, Lazarillo’s mother had no other choice…

One day, while walking into the village, she spotted the blind man. In a desperate act, she sold Lazarillo to provide money for her broken family.

As Lazarillo and the blind man were leaving the village, they passed by a stone bull. The blind man bashed Lazarillo’s head against the bull.

The blind man and Lazarillo, his head still pounding, followed the river downstream to another village, where they began begging again. Unfortunately, their pickings are slim, and Lazarillo is often forced to go hungry.

The blind man hoards most of the food for himself, and gets angry when he catches Lazarillo stealing sips of his wine.

One day, Lazarillo decided he’d had enough. While walking through the river to get to yet another village, Lazarillo led the blind man to the pillar of a bridge and bashed his head against the stone, leaving him stranded. Lazarillo went off in search of a new master.

Not much time had passed before Lazarillo found himself under the control of a new master, a clergyman.

The clergyman hoarded all of his food in a locked chest. Every night he unlocked the chest and counted all of its contents to make sure he wasn’t missing any. After he locked the chest back up again, the clergyman hid the key in his robe, so that no one could ever find it.

One night, when the clergyman was sleeping, Lazarillo sneaked into the bedroom and stole the clergyman’s key. He then unlocked the chest and stole some food, sneaking off to his own room.

The next day, the clergyman discovered that several food items were missing. After pondering it for a long time, the clergyman realized that it must have been a snake that stole the food!

While Lazarillo lay sleeping in his room with the key in his mouth, the clergyman came in and, hearing Lazarillo’s whistling snore and thinking that the thieving snake lay in Lazarillo’s bed, began beating Lazarillo senseless.

Lazarillo did the smart thing, and ran away.

This continued on for some time, but eventually Lazarillo grew up and married a nice girl from a nice village. Unfortunately, the nice girl then cheated on him. However, after facing so many hardships, Lazarillo just let the infidelity roll off his back.

The moral of the story is this: no matter how hard life gets, you have to learn to be like Lazarillo and live each day the best you possibly can! Carpe frickin’ diem!

The end.
