"Gdy naród do boju" ("When the nation to fight") - a hymn song, also known as "The Nobility in 1831", popular among the peasants and socialists from the mid-nineteenth century. The poem was written in 1835 and its author was Gustaw Ehrenberg. The text is accompanied by a fragment of the Variations in B flat major, Op. 2 by Fryderyk Chopin on the aria from the opera Don Giovanni by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The work was first published in the collection The Sounds of Bygone Years in 1848 in Paris. At the same time, an underground edition was published in Krakow. The song stigmatizes magnates, nobility and clergy - portrayed as the perpetrators of Poland's loss of independence. The text also refers to the events of the November Uprising, the Battle of Stoczek, the problem of renting peasants and the abolition of serfdom. The work consists of twelve-syllable and nine-syllable verses. The awakening peasant movement took it as its battle song. It became the anthem of the People's Army. In a modified version, it became the anthem of the United People's Party and in 1993 it was proclaimed the anthem of the Self-Defense.

Gdy naród do boju – pieśń hymniczna, znana również jako „Szlachta w roku 1831”, popularna w środowisku ludowców i socjalistów od połowy XIX wieku. Wiersz powstał w 1835 roku, jego autorem był Gustaw Ehrenberg. Do tekstu podłożono fragment Wariacji B-dur op. 2 Fryderyka Chopina na temat arii z opery Don Giovanni Wolfganga Amadeusa Mozarta. Po raz pierwszy utwór został opublikowany w zbiorze Dźwięki minionych lat w 1848 roku w Paryżu. W tym samym czasie ukazało się w Krakowie konspiracyjne wydanie. W pieśni napiętnowani są magnaci, szlachta i duchowieństwo – ukazani jako sprawcy utraty niepodległości przez Polskę. Tekst nawiązuje też do wydarzeń powstania listopadowego, bitwy pod Stoczkiem, problemu oczynszowania chłopów oraz zniesienia pańszczyzny. Utwór składa się z wersów dwunastozgłoskowych i dziewięciozgłoskowych. Budzący się ruch chłopski przyjął ją za swoją pieśń bojową. Stała się hymnem Armii Ludowej. W zmodyfikowanej wersji została hymnem Zjednoczonego Stronnictwa Ludowego a w 1993 roku została ogłoszona hymnem Samoobrony.
