Erdmännchen sind extreme Gruppentiere. Obwohl sie Raubtiere sind, haben sie aufgrund ihrer geringen Größe viele Feinde. Eine Schutzmaßnahme vor unangenehmen Überraschungen ist der sogenannte Wächter. Das ist ein Erdmännchen, das - meist auf den Hinterbeinen stehend - nach potentiellen Fressfeinden Ausschau hält und gegebenenfalls akustisch die Gruppe warnt. Die übrigen Gruppenmitglieder sind so entlastet. Die Position des Wächters wechselt im Laufe des Tages mehrfach.
Meerkats are extreme group animals. Although they are predators, they have many enemies due to their small size. One protective measure against unpleasant surprises is the so-called sentinel. This is a meerkat that - usually standing on its hind legs - keeps a lookout for potential predators and, if necessary, warns the group acoustically. The other group members are thus relieved. The position of the guard changes several times during the day.
