He was a key figure in American foreign policy in the second half of the 20th century. As National Security Advisor first and later as Secretary of State under Richard Nixon, Henry Kissinger was regarded for years as the public face of realpolitik, pragmatism above all.
Kissinger was one of the main architects of the opening up of relations between the United States and the People's Republic of China, the end of the Vietnam War, and the initiation of peace negotiations between Israel and Egypt. He also improved relations with the Soviet Union.
Loved by some and criticized by others, his decisions shaped not only American foreign policy but also the world as we know it. Without Kissinger, today's world would be very different. Perhaps better or perhaps worse, but certainly very different.
