The Ceremony. T-Bag has all of the silver spoons, and it's a race against time to stop her. With evil plans afoot, Sally and T-Shirt find themselves trapped in a catacomb with seemingly no way out. And that High T. Lady... Just whose side exactly is she on anyway? This episode was originally broadcast on Tuesday, 7th March, 1989.
Of the nine series finales of this show, there's a very real chance this is my favourite. The good in T-Shirt has come out, and I like the fact that they highlight the bravery of Sally, as she's (without spoiling anything) forced to confront things that make the rest of the quest seem like a treasure hunt in comparison. Does anyone else get the essence of a Knightmare crossover when watching? It definitely has that sort of atmosphere to it, though probably not deliberately. But they really do take us to the brink in this one as it seems the evil has triumphed over good - only for a quick piece of ingenuity to save the day right at the death. Tense stuff.
Mind you, if it was tense on the screen, imagine what it must have been like behind the scenes. Here's one of Children's ITV's highest-rated programmes, and yet at the time shooting wrapped for the series (autumn 1988), no-one knew for certain whether Elizabeth Estensen was going to return or not. There had been talk of her moving on to pastures new, but everything was in doubt. That uncertainty remained while Revenge of the T. Set was broadcast (January-March 1989), and indeed, by May, the writers found themselves busy working on that year's Christmas special without knowing for certain who their lead actress was going to be! Of course, history tells us that Elizabeth did indeed return for T. Bag's Christmas Carol, but that was to be her swansong, as during the shooting of that (June), her intended departure was confirmed. The end of an era - but what a legacy!
Back to the episode at hand, and the High T. Lady is played by Jan Holden (who I'm sorry to say is no longer with us), reprising her role from the first episode of the series. Actually, going by IMDB, this was Jan's last ever TV appearance - other credits include regular parts in the likes of Harpers West One, The Odd Man, and Emergency-Ward 10 back in the 50s and 60s.
Stay tuned for the Children's ITV continuity at the beginning and end featuring Mark Granger and Scally. Watch in horror (and admiration, actually) as poor Mark has to fill for a good 45 seconds due to a technical issue - but that wasn't the worst that things got for him. Barely four weeks on from this, he was out of a job as Central lost the contract to provide these links to an independent company. And as if to kick Mark while he was down, the new lot opted to keep on Scally! I gather he's now working as a head of recruitment somewhere or other. (Mark, not Scally.) How fickle and fleeting is the fateful finger of fame...
Many thanks to Grant for providing this recording.
