According to Abdel Haleem, Lot’s people had not merely initiated such acts but had “outdone” others, meaning they took their actions to an extreme level. Dr. Shabir supports this interpretation, suggesting it aligns better with both historical and modern understanding. He mentions that anthropological studies show homosexual behavior is not unique to Lot’s time; it exists across various cultures and species. Therefore, to interpret the verse as describing Lot’s people as “the first” would contradict this anthropological understanding. Instead, Dr. Shabir suggests that the verse critiques the extremity of their actions, framing them as having gone beyond acceptable boundaries in a way that drew the attention and reproach of their prophet. This perspective also ties into a broader Islamic principle of balance, justice, and fairness, especially in interactions and judgments. Dr. Shabir highlights that, while the Quran upholds certain moral standards—such as traditional marriage between a man and a woman—it also emphasizes fair and just treatment of all people, even when they have transgressed.
