Scientists have broken the world record for the deepest fish ever caught, as well as the deepest fish ever filmed on camera.

A juvenile snailfish - part of the Liparidae family - was filmed in August 2022 at a depth of 8,336 metres in the Izu-Ogasawara Trench, beating the previous record in the Mariana Trench by 158 metres.

A few days later the team collected two snailfish at 8,022 metres deep in the Japan Trench, the first fish to ever be collected from deeper than eight kilometres.

“If someone does find a deeper fish, it's not going to be by much,” the deep-sea research expedition’s chief scientist, Alan Jamieson, told Reuters on Monday (April 3).

The research expedition by the University of Western Australia and the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology was part of a 10-year study on the deepest fish in the world.

EXPEDITION'S CHIEF SCIENTIST, PROFESSOR ALAN JAMIESON, SAYING:

"Snailfish are great, snailfish are amazing. Because they are not a deep sea fish, so they're the deepest fish in the world, but they're not a deep sea fish. They're a, their family is called Liparidae and there are 300 species at least of snailfish. Most of them are very very shallow. Some of them are even in estuaries so they're not what we'd consider a deep sea fish but they've speciated into every corner of the globe and they've overtaken all the deep sea fish so these ones you see in the video are 1,000 metres deeper than what you would normally think of as being a deep sea fish so I love the fact that they're kind of small and goofy and fun and just not being very deep sea-like yet at the same time they're way more deep sea than most deep sea fish.

"You still get a real good buzz out of it, because the way in which the cameras work is you put them underwater for maybe 10 hours and we have no real-time communication so it comes back on the surface eventually and we bring it on the ship and we download it and you end up with a small SD card and you stick it in your laptop and then you open up the video and see what you get. And it's always really satisfying in that moment when you see not just a fish, but a lot of fish in really good, high definition video, you realise you've really nailed it, it's great fun."

"And then over time we've now done something like 500 lander deployments of which 250 something have been in the right range. And so we've been narrowing it done and honing in on what that limit is so if someone does find a deeper fish, it's not going to be by much, it'll become trivial now. I don't think there's any way in which we'd find a fish a 1,000 metres deeper or even maybe 100 metres deeper. So we're confident now that we've really understood this."

"We tell people from the very early ages, as young as two or three that the deep sea is a horrible scary place that you shouldn't go, and that grows with you with time. And even if you watch the best documentaries in the world, they'll still tell you that the deep sea is this cold, dark alien place full of monsters and therefore we don't appreciate the fact that it is fundamentally most of planet Earth and the resources should be put into understanding and how to work out how we are affecting it and how it works."
