16:: THE SEPTUAGINT GENESIS - Brenton Translation (With read-along text)
01.01.1970 01:00:00 01.07.2023 18:00:11 Ferdinand Hitzig, the 19th-century German theologian, once said, “Gentlemen, have you a Septuagint? If not, sell all you have, and buy a Septuagint.”
What is the Septuagint? It is the oldest and quite possibly the most important translation of the Bible. It was preferred to the Hebrew text by the Early Christian Church.
When Hebrew ceased to be the spoken language of the Jewish people after they went into exile, Aramaic became their primary language. However Greek became the primary language for the many Jews living in Egypt, and it became necessary for the Hebrew Scriptures to be translated into Greek.
The term Septuagint, meaning “seventy,” actually refers to the seventy-two translators—six from each tribe of Israel—involved in translating the Pentateuch from Hebrew to Greek in the third century BCE (seventy-two is rounded down to seventy.)
The importance of the Septuagint cannot be emphasized enough. It is the Bible that Jesus read and the translation that the New Testament writers quoted from 90 percent of the time. There are around 300 Old Testament passages that are directly quoted or strongly alluded to in the New Testament that are from the Septuagint and not the Hebrew or Masoretic text.
Many Christians today have little or no knowledge of this most important translation of the Bible, which is why I felt compelled to record at least the Book of Genesis. If there is a demand, I will record more.
I am reading from the English translation by Sir Lancelot Charles Lee Brenton, first published in London in 1851.

NOTE ABOUT NAME PRONUNCIATIONS: When I read the KJV Bible, I read frpm a version that has symbols above the words from which could tell the correct pronunication. In the Septuagint most of the names are spelt differently, as you can see if you follow the read-along text. I researched online as much as I could to get the correct Septugint pronunciation, but I am aware that its not perfect. Also I am not Jewish and so unfamiliar with Hebrew pronunciation. But I did the best I could!

20:: The Fourth Book of Maccabees (4 Maccabees) – read by Christopher Glyn
01.01.1970 01:00:00 11.06.2023 19:00:09 I debated for some time whether I should record 4 Maccabees, as it describes, in grisly detail, the torture and death of a Jewish woman and her seven sons by King Antiochus IV Epiphanes for refusing to renounce their strict adherence to Judaism.
Chapters 5 – 12 are not for the faint-hearted.
But the torments they endured, as “they loved not their lives unto death” remind us of the multitude of God’s children, throughout the entire span of history, who have endured all kinds of tortures rather than deny their faith. The Bible and history are full of such examples, not least Jesus Himself. And there will be any more martyrs between now and the end of days.
This reading of 4 Maccabees is a tribute to the multitudes of God’s children, “who were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection.” (Hebrews 11:35) For those of us who have thus far led comfortable Christian lives, let the story of these brave martyrs be a reminder that we too may yet be called to make the ultimate sacrifice.
But although there are some difficult passages to digest, 4 Maccabees is above all a tale of triumph, where faith and courage triumph over tyranny. It is a gripping testament to the power of faith, reason, and resilience and paints a vivid portrait of a people united in their unwavering devotion to their traditions, their faith, and their determination to stand firm in the face of unimaginable tribulations. as they confront the ultimate test of their faith.

It is a homily or philosophic discourse praising the supremacy of pious reason over passion. It is a work that combines Hellenistic Judaism with influence from Greek philosophy, particularly the school of Stoicism.
The work is largely an elaboration of the stories of martyrdom in the book 2 Maccabees: that of the woman with seven sons and the scribe Eleazar, who are tortured to death by Seleucid King Antiochus IV Epiphanes in an attempt to make them renounce their adherence to Judaism. What 2 Maccabees covered in one chapter and a half, 4 Maccabees extends to a full 14 chapters of dialogue and philosophical discussion. 4 Maccabees recasts the story as one of reason and logic: the martyrs will be rewarded in the afterlife, so it is rational to continue to obey Jewish law, even at the risk of torture and death.)

The Book of Psalms is the Bible’s longest book. No other Bible book so totally expresses the full range of human emotions and needs in relation to God and human life. About half of the Psalms involve prayers of faith in times of adversity.
The Book of Psalms, as Spirit-inspired prayers and praises, were written, generally speaking, to express the deep inner emotions of the human heart in relation to God. Many were written as prayers to God, expressing trust, love, adoration, thanksgiving, praise, and a longing for close fellowship. Others were written to express discouragement, deep distress, fear, anxiety, humiliation, a cry for deliverance, healing, or vindication. Others were written as songs expressing praise, thanksgiving, and adoration for who God is and for the great things He has done. Some psalms contain important Messianic sections that were fulfilled in their fullest meaning in Jesus Christ.
The Psalms cover a great breadth of topics, including revelation about God, creation, humankind, salvation, sin and evil, justice and righteousness, worship and praise, prayer and judgement. Within the Psalms, God is viewed in a rich variety of ways - as a fortress,rock, shield, shepherd, victor, creator, ruler, judge, redeemer, sustainer, healer and avenger. He expresses love, anger and compassion. He is everywhere present, all-knowing and almighty. God’s people are also described in various ways: as the apple of His eye, sheep, saints, the upright and the righteous whom He has brought out of the horrible pit, set their feet on a rock, and put a new song in their mouths. God directs their steps, satisfies their spiritual longings, forgives all their sins, heals all their diseases and provides for them an eternal dwelling.
Of the 150 psalms, 73 are ascribed to King David, 12 to Asaph (a musically and prophetically gifted Levite), 10 to the sons of Korah (a musically gifted family, two to Solomon, one to Heman, one to Ethan and one to Moses. The final compilation of the Book of Psalms most likely occurred during the time of Ezra and Nehemiah (450-400 BC). There are 186 quotations from the Psalms in the New Testament, far more than from any other Old Testament book.
