In America from early in the 20th century local general stores and company stores had ungodly amounts of power and were often corrupt and exploitive. These stores often gave out large lines of credit and sold products 10x over retail. This ensured the family would never be able to pay the debt. Hubbardville ain’t a real town, but I’m sure this story took place in every state in the Southeast at some point. This story is particularly personal for me because my one side of my family lived in Brilliant, AL and was beholden to the coal mine company store and the other side ran a general store in Muhlenberg County, KY. The rich history of the stores and their power shaped the lineage of my family and influenced the people who raised me. This tune was originally written by Larry Murray but the version I fell in love with is from Jim Ringer. Jim Ringer is an obscure singer from the 70’s folk era. He has been a huge inspiration on my life and is easily in my top 20 of influences. I have built a career on an identity I know longer have and a purgatory that no longer binds me. The backpack represents a lot of things and it’s hard to explain from the perspective of someone who live out of a backpack and used one as a chair for more years than I actually owned one. It symbolizes the burdens I carry good and bad, but also is a real life look at who I used to be. I spent years reaching into my pack of burdens, pulling out poison to slowly kill myself. We choose the burdens we carry in this world and this story represents me choosing to leave those most sadistic and rotten burdens behind. This is the greatest and most painful piece of art I have ever made all around. The first time I played this song back after nonchalantly recording it I wept in thankfulness for the great gift of writing I had been given. The process of making this video was devastating emotionally from the needle to Nichols’ Bible. I have to give serious thanks to Jesse Weeden of One Trick Pony Media for his incredible work creating this on a few days turn around. Without his eye and diligence this could not have happened. I had been pitched a few music video concepts from my management at Space Colonel, but I felt that this song needed a personal touch. I was talking on the phone with Mike Vanata about the potential of him coming out from Wyoming and filming something on my land here in Muhlenberg County, KY. Toward the end of the conversation I told him I would think of something all the while it was already coming together in my head. With 10 minutes of hanging up I sent him a basic script of this concept. This video encapsulates mine and Ashley’s relationship in a lot of ways and the general dynamic of the feminine and masculine spirit. I have always wandered into the unknown in search of something my soul craves that has often led me into traps unforeseen. Ashley has always been there to clean me up and tame the beast within me as part of her sacred duty. As years have gone by and I have gained wisdom through risk, reward and ruin I have become more effective in bringing back valuable treasures from my quests into the darkness. Over time she has become the ultimate embodiment of empathy and patience that my soul needs to heal from those journeys. It is a tale as old as time spanning every culture and creed of human. There are a lot of psychological connections between the visual and phonic aspect of this piece of art. Every other shot carries a dual meaning mostly related to the song and history of Lost Dog, but also to the process and people involved in the creation of the video. This song develops such an authentic and universally felt notion within the concept of soulmates. This video is an absolutely perfect interpretation of this song and in unison became a masterpiece. I want to thank Ashley Mae for being my guiding star and healing light through years of trial and misfortune most often brought on by my pride and foolishness. In America from early in the 20th century local general stores and company stores had ungodly amounts of power and were often corrupt and exploitive. These stores often gave out large lines of credit and sold products 10x over retail. This ensured the family would never be able to pay the debt. Hubbardville ain’t a real town, but I’m sure this story took place in every state in the Southeast at some point. This story is particularly personal for me because my one side of my family lived in Brilliant, AL and was beholden to the coal mine company store and the other side ran a general store in Muhlenberg County, KY. The rich history of the stores and their power shaped the lineage of my family and influenced the people who raised me. This tune was originally written by Larry Murray but the version I fell in love with is from Jim Ringer. Jim Ringer is an obscure singer from the 70’s folk era. He has been a huge inspiration on my life and is easily in my top 20 of influences. Pre-orders are available now at: https://orcd.co/survived *** I wrote the script for ‘Survived’ over the course of 3 days entirely in my head while contemplating the personal struggle of moving on from my past self. I have built a career on an identity I know longer have and a purgatory that no longer binds me. The backpack represents a lot of things and it’s hard to explain from the perspective of someone who live out of a backpack and used one as a chair for more years than I actually owned one. It symbolizes the burdens I carry good and bad, but also is a real life look at who I used to be. I spent years reaching into my pack of burdens, pulling out poison to slowly kill myself. We choose the burdens we carry in this world and this story represents me choosing to leave those most sadistic and rotten burdens behind. This is the greatest and most painful piece of art I have ever made all around. The first time I played this song back after nonchalantly recording it I wept in thankfulness for the great gift of writing I had been given. The process of making this video was devastating emotionally from the needle to Nichols’ Bible. I have to give serious thanks to Jesse Weeden of One Trick Pony Media for his incredible work creating this on a few days turn around. Without his eye and diligence this could not have happened. Pre-orders are available now at: https://orcd.co/survived Note from Benjamin Tod: I wrote the script for the “Brighter Shade” video in the span of about five minutes. I had been pitched a few music video concepts from my management at Space Colonel, but I felt that this song needed a personal touch. I was talking on the phone with Mike Vanata about the potential of him coming out from Wyoming and filming something on my land here in Muhlenberg County, KY. Toward the end of the conversation I told him I would think of something all the while it was already coming together in my head. With 10 minutes of hanging up I sent him a basic script of this concept. This video encapsulates mine and Ashley’s relationship in a lot of ways and the general dynamic of the feminine and masculine spirit. I have always wandered into the unknown in search of something my soul craves that has often led me into traps unforeseen. Ashley has always been there to clean me up and tame the beast within me as part of her sacred duty. As years have gone by and I have gained wisdom through risk, reward and ruin I have become more effective in bringing back valuable treasures from my quests into the darkness. Over time she has become the ultimate embodiment of empathy and patience that my soul needs to heal from those journeys. It is a tale as old as time spanning every culture and creed of human. There are a lot of psychological connections between the visual and phonic aspect of this piece of art. Every other shot carries a dual meaning mostly related to the song and history of Lost Dog, but also to the process and people involved in the creation of the video. This song develops such an authentic and universally felt notion within the concept of soulmates. This video is an absolutely perfect interpretation of this song and in unison became a masterpiece. I want to thank Mike Vanata from Western AF for his incredible work and the invaluable friendship we share. I want to thank Ashley Mae for being my guiding star and healing light through years of trial and misfortune most often brought on by my pride and foolishness.
