1:: The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 14.04.2024 · 16:10:01 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· In this book Haidt argues that the rise in mental health disorders has been driven by the decline of play-based childhood and the shift to a terminally online one. It lays out the argument and evidence, as well as providing an approach that Haidt thinks could help remedy the situation. I review the book, hopefully drawing a tiny bit of attention to a subject that needs effective action. Like and subscribe for more book reviews. 01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 01.03.2024 · 13:23:40 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Today I review Emperor of Rome by Mary Beard, where she focusses less on the characters but more the role and power of the Emperor itself. How did they rule the Emperor? ··· ··· ··· ··· In today's book review former Greek finance minister discusses the rise of the big tech firms in what he calls Technofeudalism. He lays out the financial history and trends that led to their power and how they got it. 01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 24.11.2023 · 12:00:01 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Today I review The Spear, The Scroll and The Pebble, a book of how men in Ancient Greece heavily influenced the formation of western civilization through military collective decision making and the growth of literacy throughout Ancient Greece. In this densely packed book Billows challenges some of the classic assumptions and argues that literacy, collective politics (even in city-states like Sparta) and citizen-warrior forces shaped Ancient Greece and changed civilisation forever. 01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 26.05.2023 · 11:00:27 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Today I review the biography Marcus Aurelius – Warrior, Philosopher, Emperor by Frank McLynn. Marcus is an interesting character for many reasons – he seemed to combine power, moderation, prowess and left a terrible legacy in the form of Commodus. Let's review the picture created by McLynn of this enigmatic figure, and whether it is a balanced biographical analysis. Apologies for the abrupt ending – my camera decided to begin removing all sound no matter the length of the video I recorded, so it took several takes and a lot of editing to create even an imperfect video.
