Just a hint - it has nothing whatsoever to do with getting drunk. It's the exact truth - Balcones Distilling came out with its first stuff the year before Garrison Brothers, and thus is the first legal distillery in Texas since Prohibition. But Garrison is the first legal *bourbon* distillery - Balcones' first release was barley whisky, not bourbon. :)/media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="0" average="0.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="15"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:XfI0MY5uB44/id> yt:videoId>XfI0MY5uB44/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UCrooC0LOLxRHMDQRRUCU6TA/yt:channelId> title>Old Overholt 4 year rye/title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfI0MY5uB44"/> author> name>Whisky For Beginners/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrooC0LOLxRHMDQRRUCU6TA/uri> /author> published>2024-03-25T05:30:30+00:00/published> updated>2024-05-23T09:20:29+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>Old Overholt 4 year rye/media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/XfI0MY5uB44?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i1.ytimg.com/vi/XfI0MY5uB44/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>A review of the basic Old Overholt rye whisky. I wondered that myself at one point, and did a video about it (I think I'll put the link below, though it's really poor quality - it's Thoroughly Amateur™ with a vengeance :) ). The thing is that no two people have exactly the same palate, and therefore no two people will always get the same notes from the same whisky. Even professional reviewers won't always get what I get (I suspect Fred Minnick, for instance, doesn't get pecans from George Dickel juice), and those of us who aren't professionals surely will differ sometimes. 01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 03.06.2024 · 05:47:06 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· I tried this bourbon on the recommendation of a Total Wine employee. I love Total Wine, though I prefer Kelly Liquors, but their store brands...well, let me not give you the review before you watch the review. :D

3:: explanation 29MAY24

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 30.05.2024 · 03:06:12 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· I've not uploaded anything for a pretty fair while - and here's why.

4:: Fight the FOMO

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 22.04.2024 · 05:25:26 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· FOMO is Fear of Missing Out - and it's one of the most useless things there is in whisky. People will drive all over creation, and spend money they could put more profitably into other things, just to get one bottle that everyone else tells them they need to have (rugged individualism? not in the United States - people here blindly follow every trend that comes along). As you can tell, I have no use for FOMO, and the video will tell you more about that.

5:: Why I'm a Thorough Amateur

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 19.04.2024 · 03:46:26 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· You saw the "title cards" saying Thoroughly Amateur Productions. If I ever - by some miracle - wind up with a production company, that's what I'll call it, for grins and giggles if for no other reason. :) If you've seen any of my videos, especially those I made before 2024, and most especially the very first ones, you've seen with your own eyes that I am a THOROUGH amateur. But why is that? Well, in case you were wondering, or even if you weren't, here's the answer. :)

6:: Goodbye, Pot Still Bourbon

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 16.04.2024 · 04:45:12 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· If you're a fan of Balcones Distilling, you'll know from the title, probably, what this video's about. If not, you may get a hint from the "thumbnail." Either way, you'll get the full picture as you watch. I just wish I didn't have to make this video. :(

7:: Can you get good affordable whisky?

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 08.04.2024 · 06:29:06 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· If you hang around the whisky world for very long, you'll learn that there are some whiskies that in order to buy you have to mortgage your house and sell your first born. Some people of course can afford this, and that's fine. But not everyone can, and even if they can not everyone wants to pay hundreds of dollars for a bottle of whisky. But can you find good whisky that's easy to afford? And hurray! I enjoyed making all these Whisky Basics videos, but I am GLAD that this is, finally, the last one. Now I can review things, or make "miscellaneous" videos, without having a whole list to work through :)

8:: What do I like about whisky?

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 02.04.2024 · 06:25:07 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· This is #35 - the next to last video in the list of Whisky Basics. I'd been thinking there were only 35, but then I actually looked at the list, and saw there were 36. :D Anyway, this is what I like about whisky. Just a hint - it has nothing whatsoever to do with getting drunk. Just FWIW, what YouTube calls the "thumbnail" but I would call a cover photo is the bottom strip from a bottle of Balcones Lineage Texas Single Malt. It's the exact truth - Balcones Distilling came out with its first stuff the year before Garrison Brothers, and thus is the first legal distillery in Texas since Prohibition. But Garrison is the first legal *bourbon* distillery - Balcones' first release was barley whisky, not bourbon. :)

9:: Old Overholt 4 year rye

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 25.03.2024 · 05:30:30 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· A review of the basic Old Overholt rye whisky. This isn't the most spectacular whisky I've ever had, but it's proof that Jim Beam can produce drinkable juice when they want to. But see the review for my full opinion. :) Just FWIW, I'm drinking Old Overholt 4 year rye even while I'm uploading this video.

10:: What are whiskies you wouldn't buy again?

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 18.03.2024 · 00:00:06 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Some whisky I love, some I like, some I hate - and some I just don't like enough to buy again. The latter two categories come into play here, as I talk about stuff that, whether I hated it, or just didn't like it much, I won't spend money on again.

11:: What are some quirks of various whiskies?

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 11.03.2024 · 06:27:06 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· *I just recently realized - I'm a Thorough Amateur, remember - that there have been comments way in the past that I never knew about, and thus didn't respond to. I apologize. If you did make a comment in the past, and you would like a response, please post it again in the comments for this video; now that I know what happened, I'm checking the comments every couple of days (why YouTube isn't notifying me I don't know; it's not a terribly intuitive interface from this side, but I did manage to find my notification preferences and YouTube should be notifying me. Meanwhile, this video... Different whiskies are different from each other. When I was just getting started I thought whisky was whisky, and if you'd had one you knew what they all were like. It turns out I was wrong. :)

12:: My higher proof bottles - 29FEB24

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 04.03.2024 · 06:12:05 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· At the time I recorded this, I had just finished recording the 35th and final video of my long list of Whisky Basics. I haven't yet uploaded the last of the Whisky Basics series, but just as I took a break from the "official" stuff and recorded this one, so I'll take a break and upload this one too. :) This is the higher proof whisky I have on hand as of February 29, 2024.

13:: What are some broad categories of whisky?

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 29.02.2024 · 22:40:46 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· This video might well have served early on, but here it is, the 32nd in my Whisky Basics series - almost to the end. And it's a question I would've liked to find the answer to along with a lot of other answers, in one place. Well, here it is - with a lot of others. :)

14:: Can you find the same whisky everywhere?

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 20.02.2024 · 22:23:42 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· When I started drinking whisky in September of 2021, I figured that you could pretty much find the same whisky wherever you went, though I hadn't actually thought about it much if at all. But is that the case?

15:: What is single barrel whisky?

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 12.02.2024 · 06:57:47 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· I had several videos ready to go...and realized I'd inadvertently skipped a couple, and couldn't continue or they'd be out of order. So I waited till I could record the missing videos, and get on with things. This one follows up somewhat on the last video, which dealt with proof. Single barrel whisky is usually the proof of the barrel, and the previous video explains what barrel proof is. But barrel proof and single barrel aren't synonymous, and this video explains what the latter term means.

16:: What is proof, full proof, and barrel proof?

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 22.01.2024 · 06:00:12 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· When talking about whisky, we talk a lot about proof. And then there are the phrases "full proof" and "barrel proof." If you're new to whisky, these things might be new to you - the latter two certainly were for me. Here's what they mean.

17:: What is hot whisky?

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 11.01.2024 · 05:27:54 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· You'll sometimes hear someone say about a whisky, "That's hot!" What does he mean? Did it just come out of the tea kettle? has it been sitting out in the sun? does it burn like jalapeño peppers? Or is it something else? Here's the answer.

18:: Lineage barley whisky

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 01.08.2023 · 03:56:42 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· The official name is Balcones Lineage Texas Single Malt Whisky (they use the Scottish spelling of the word), but "malt" is a British word. I'm an American, and so I call "malt," or "malted" barley, sprouted barley, because that's exactly what it is. So this isn't, in American English, "single malt" whisky, but barley whisky - all the "single" does is tell us that it's the product of just one distillery. I didn't put all that in the video, because I'm just reviewing the juice, so on with the show. :)

19:: Why Should You Buy Whisky?

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 18.07.2023 · 05:11:32 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Should you buy it to drink? to collect? to sell*? Any combination thereof? *It is illegal for individuals to sell whisky, which makes the secondary market a black market. But the government rarely, if ever cracks down, which is fine by me - it's tyranny to tell someone he can't sell a bottle of whisky to someone else.

20:: Four Roses Single Barrel

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 10.07.2023 · 06:26:11 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· A review of Four Roses Single Barrel bourbon. But by nature a single barrel bourbon varies from barrel to barrel, so if you get a bottle of this, it might not be the same as this one. :) I missed uploading a video last week, but I remember this week.

21:: Woodford Reserve Double Oaked

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 26.06.2023 · 06:50:32 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· This is, in my opinion, one of the best bourbons out there. On the MeWe Bourbon Aficionados group, they judge bourbon on a scale from Jim Beam at the bottom to Woodford Reserve at the top, and this is even better than the regular Woodford. But watch the review. :)

22:: Bluff Springs

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 20.06.2023 · 05:49:24 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Buffalo Trace is hard to find in some places (maybe a lot of places?) - I've only seen it on the shelf twice here in Albuquerque. So if you like that juice, what do you do? Here's an alternative.

23:: Balcones True Blue

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 11.06.2023 · 21:27:03 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· A review of True Blue corn whisky from Balcones Distilling

24:: What Is the Best Whisky

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 06.06.2023 · 06:53:04 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· One of the questions people new to whisky ask is, "What is the best whisky?" Well, there isn't a single answer to that - but there is an answer.

25:: What Are Whisky Expressions?

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 28.05.2023 · 20:40:43 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· You may have heard of "expressions" of whisky. Maybe you've been able to figure it out from the context, or perhaps not. Well, here's a beginner level explanation of the term. :)

26:: Old Forester 100

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 22.05.2023 · 07:21:25 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Here I review Old Forester 100 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whisky

27:: What does it mean to drink responsibly

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 14.05.2023 · 21:06:24 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· It's easy to talk about drinking responsibly - but what does it mean to do so? I don't pretend to be the world's expert, but for beginners, here are some ideas.

28:: Bulleit bourbon

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 07.05.2023 · 23:34:55 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· A review of Bulleit bourbon

29:: Old Grand Dad Bonded

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 01.05.2023 · 07:36:15 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· A review of Old Grand-Dad bonded Kentucky bourbon

30:: Whisky snobs and how to deal with them

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 30.04.2023 · 18:51:53 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· This is something of an unpleasant topic, but I ran into whisky snobs early on, and you might too. Here I define what I mean by the term, and how I recommend you deal with such people.

31:: Rebel 100

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 24.04.2023 · 11:10:27 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· A review of Rebel 100, a 100 proof bourbon from Lux Row

32:: Unicorns, allocated whiskies, and dusties

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 24.04.2023 · 10:50:26 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· What's a unicorn? what's allocated whisky? what's a dusty? I didn't know either when I was just getting started, but this is useful stuff to know. But the Bulleit bourbon that I'm using for the thumbnail isn't any of these - it's just a picture small enough that YouTube will let me use it. :)

33:: Balcones Texas Pot Still Bourbon

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 16.04.2023 · 22:26:29 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· A review of my favorite whisky in all the world.

34:: How Do You Read a Whisky Label?

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 16.04.2023 · 22:00:08 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Especially on American whiskies there's a ton of information. This won't tell you everything, but it will give you the basics of how to read the label and know what's in the bottle.

35:: What is Aging Whisky?

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 10.04.2023 · 09:15:51 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Perhaps aging is something you already know about whisky. But I knew pretty much nothing about this aspect of whisky when I first started, and for those who are in that boat here's a basic video on the subject.

36:: Maker's Mark

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 02.04.2023 · 20:15:09 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· A review of Maker's mark bourbon

40:: What Is Bonded Whisky?

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 19.03.2023 · 19:41:12 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ···

41:: What Is Straight Whisky

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 13.03.2023 · 05:45:58 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ···
