ANSWERING THE CALL
These past few lessons have all focused on a variety of the tools that Josh Smith relies on to strengthen the narrative content in his guitar solos. Not note choices, but a wider view of the things that will help to create better phrasing.

MELODIC MUSE by Andy Timmons
GHOST IN THE MACHINE
Last month, Andy Timmons broke down the first half of his 24-bar outro solo in “Ghost of You,” from the 2006 Andy Timmons Band album Resolution. It’s a fairly complex solo that requires attention to detail: there are some challenging passages built from long streams of 32nd notes, which are tempered by more melodic phrases articulated with precise string bending techniques like oblique bends and two-step “overbends.” So let’s get back to it!

media:description>The Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay has been one of the most popular bass guitars since its original release way back in the ‘70s, and has been championed by the likes of Carol Kaye, Flea, Pino Palladino, Tony Levin, and countless other low-end legends. So, in a bid to recapture that old-school vintage flair for modern players – and make it more accessible to bass aficionados – the firm has masterminded a worthy spiritual successor: the Retro ‘70s StingRay.

In Deep by Andy Aledort
THE ALBERT / JIMI / STEVIE SHUFFLE
In the last few columns, we explored an effective approach to strengthening our sense of groove and time, for both rhythm and lead playing. The first part of the exercise entails devising a repeating riff, or vamp, that establishes the groove. The second part is to solo over that groove with an ear towards locking into the rhythm part as solidly as possible.

media:description>Blues-country-jazz master and all-round tone wizard Josh Smith talks us through the pedals he couldn’t live without.
The pilot episode for Pedalypocalypse, this was filmed in 2020 at The Bungalow in LA and, as always, hosted by British guitarist Robin Davey, with blues-country-jazzmaster and all-round tone wizard Josh Smith talking us through his love for the pedals he couldn’t live without: The Lovepedal Tchula, his main pedal for the last 15 years and a pedal he helped design, the Vemuram Myriad Fuzz – another pedal he helped design – and the Eventide H9 multi-effects unit… Which he admits is kinda cheating.
Watch as he talks us through each pedal, demonstrating their various tones and how he uses them to get the signature Josh Smith sound.

01.01.1970 01:00:00 12.04.2024 14:11:32 The Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay has been one of the most popular bass guitars since its original release way back in the ‘70s, and has been championed by the likes of Carol Kaye, Flea, Pino Palladino, Tony Levin, and countless other low-end legends. So, in a bid to recapture that old-school vintage flair for modern players – and make it more accessible to bass aficionados – the firm has masterminded a worthy spiritual successor: the Retro ‘70s StingRay.

Over the last few months, Jash Smith talked about a few of the tools he likes to use to strengthen the narrative content of his improvised solos. IN THE GROOVE
Last month, we began exploring ways to instill a solo with a solid groove and a deep pocket. A great technique I have found for fortifying one’s connection to the groove is to first set up a specific repeating vamp then utilize different approaches to play over it, in terms of the phrasing and syncopation of the lines.

IN THE GROOVE
An essential mindset when soloing is to strive to make your lines sit as deeply “in the pocket” and as “locked into the groove” as possible. All of our favorite players developed the ability to communicate a deep connection to the groove while soloing, which fortifies their playing with greater expressiveness and musicality.

CUFF ’EM
For the last couple of months, we learned about how Josh Smith employs repetition as one of the three tools he likes to use in order to strengthen his “melodic narrative” in the development of an improvised solo. The other two tools are what Josh likes to call “handcuffs,” where he'll force himself to play within a specific position, and “call and response,” where he will play a phrase and then “answer” it with the subsequent phrase. This month, we'll apply the “handcuffs” approach.

Last month, Andy Aledort discussed the virtues of aiming to emulate the sound of the human voice when playing single-note lines and detailed a variety of ways to do so, with and without a slide. POSITION PLAYER
For the next few columns, Andy Timmons presents his song “Ghost of You,” which he recorded with the Andy Timmons Band for their 2006 album, Resolution. This proved to be a very pivotal record for him, as it marked a point when he really began digging into “tone questing,” and it was also the first record where he did not include any overdubs. There’s just one guitar, backed by bass and drums throughout the entire record. It proved to be a transitional turning point for him because this is how he's since recorded every album.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE, PART 11
For Joe Bonamassa, the Gibson SG was a guitar that took him about 30 years to figure out. For the longest time, he wasn’t able to get on with SGs. Joe found that the balance of the instrument always felt a little off — they were often headstock-heavy — and often sounded a little too bright for his taste. But that all changed one day when he decided, “I’m going to commit to getting it together on the SG, and the best way to do that is to start performing with it.”

BOOGIE ON
Last month, we initiated a deeper dive into Magic Sam’s guitar tour de force, the live version of his classic blues instrumental “Lookin’ Good,” also known as “Sam’s Boogie.” The elusive techniques Sam uses to play this tune have eluded many players for years. While I was touring with Dickey Betts a few years back, one day he asked me to teach him how to play “Sam’s Boogie.” I didn’t know how! So I set about learning it, and it was quite a challenge. Once I had a handle on it, Dickey and I got together and would work on all the intricacies involved in trying to recreate the variety of techniques Magic Sam employs on this classic track.

DIMINISHED RETURNS, PART 2
Last month, we began our investigation into ways in which to incorporate diminished ideas into a blues solo. Our examples were based on a standard 12-bar blues progression in the key of A, and we made it from the I (one) chord, A6, to the IV (four) chord, D7, and back. This month, let’s continue by heading from the I chord to the V (five), E7, and back, using diminished 7 chord shapes, which we’ll refer to simply as diminished, as harmonic-melodic “bridges” between the primary chords.

STORY TELLING
Over the next two columns, Andy Timmons discusses his guitar solo in “Welcome Home,” a tune he had written and recorded for the 2016 Andy Timmons Band album, Theme From a Perfect World. The solo is played over what is basically a repeating four-bar, three-chord progression, but the approach he took for the solo was to craft lines that are melodic and hooky and played in an emotive, expressive way, while also targeting elements of the chords, so that the melody clearly dictates, or describes, the underlying progression.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE, PART 5
Today, we continue our “guitar safari” with a look at one of Joe Bonamassa's favorite axes, the Gibson ES-345. The 345 and 355 are famous for their stereo pickup configuration and Varitone circuit, which is a six-position control with a rotary knob that allows you to switch between different predetermined frequency scoops, altering the EQ of the highs, mids and lows.

QUADRAPHONIC
One of the coolest sounds is that of a melody that's harmonized, either on the same instrument or another. Many are well-familiar with the dual lead lines heard in the Allman Brothers Band songs “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed,” “Whipping Post” and “Blue Sky,” the Beatles’ “And Your Bird Can Sing,” Thin Lizzy’s “The Boys Are Back in Town,” Steely Dan’s “Reelin’ In the Years,” Iron Maiden’s “The Trooper” and many other songs. In this lesson, Andy Aledort demonstrates ways in which you can add a harmonized line on top of single-note melody.

But, he says, “Every so often you come across a gear innovation that stops you in your tracks and makes you say, ‘Wow, this is super cool.’ Well, let me tell you – that innovation is the Seymour Duncan HyperSwitch.”
We couldn’t agree more. But what, exactly, is this game-changing piece of gear? The HyperSwitch is an active 5-way blade that is compatible with most passive pickups and configured via your smartphone. Once installed in your guitar, you can design, store and recall custom pickup configurations via the dedicated mobile app, and save them to the HyperSwitch.

DIMINISHED RETURNS
Over the last few months, we explored the use of chromaticism within the blues as part of a three-tiered approach that Josh Smith likes to use to connect one chord to the next in a blues progression, namely, chromaticism, diminished phrases and ii - V - I (two-five- one) turnarounds. This month, we will focus on diminished 7 chords, which we’ll refer to simply as diminished.

HYBRID VEHICLE, PART 3
One of Andy Timmons' favorite pick-hand articulation techniques is hybrid picking, which combines flatpicking with fingerpicking, either together or in a quickly alternating fashion. When a series of notes is played with just the pick, most often the sound is very uniform. This is, of course, something that is generally desirable and, in fact, needs to be practiced diligently in order to execute flat- picking with precision and consistency.

THEORIES OF RELATIVITY, PART 3
Over the last two columns, we looked at various ways to craft melodic solos over alternating relative major and minor chords. As a basis for study, Andy used the 16-bar chord progression from his original song “Twilights,” which includes two different sets of relative major and minor chords. This month, he offers some additional examples of approaches to melodic soloing over this progression.

THEORIES OF RELATIVITY, PART 2
Last month, we looked at ways to craft melodies that work well over relative major and minor chords. To review, a relative minor chord is rooted a minor 3rd, or three half steps or frets, below a major chord. As mentioned, shifting between relative major and minor chords and is a common move in popular music and can be heard in countless songs, such as “Dock of the Bay” by Otis Redding, “Yesterday” by the Beatles, “Into the Great Wide Open” by Tom Petty and “The Boys of Summer” by Don Henley.

CHROMA-ZONE
Last month, Josh Smith began a new series of lessons covering three specific approaches
he likes to take when soloing, whether within a 12-bar blues, a one-chord funk vamp, a swinging country tune or a jazz standard. He started off exploring the use of chro-maticism, which refers to playing notes or chords that are a half step apart. For example, playing the notes C, C#, D, D# and E in order would constitute an ascending chromatic line. Playing E, Eb, D, Db and C would constitute a descending chromatic line.
