11:: THE HOLY BIBLE The Book of Ruth

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 08.01.2022 · 01:07:48 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· The Holy Bible The Book of Ruth English Standard Version Summary of the Book of Ruth This summary of the book of Ruth provides information about the title, author(s), date of writing, chronology, theme, theology, outline, a brief overview, and the chapters of the Book of Ruth. Title The book is named after one of its main characters, a young woman of Moab, the great-grandmother of David and an ancestress of Jesus (4:21-22; Mt 1:1,5). The only other Biblical book bearing the name of a woman is Esther. Background The story is set in the time of the judges, a time characterized in the book of Judges as a period of religious and moral degeneracy, national disunity and frequent foreign oppression. The book of Ruth reflects a time of peace between Israel and Moab (contrast Jdg 3:12-30). Like 1Sa 1-2, it gives a series of intimate glimpses into the private lives of the members of an Israelite family. It also presents a delightful account of the remnant of true faith and piety in the period of the judges, relieving an otherwise wholly dark picture of that era. Author and Date of Writing The author is unknown. Jewish tradition points to Samuel, but it is unlikely that he is the author because the mention of David (4:17,22) implies a later date. Further, the literary style of Hebrew used in Ruth suggests that it was written during the period of the monarchy. Theme and Theology The importance of faithful love in human relationships among God's kingdom people is powerfully underscored. The author focuses on Ruth's unswerving and selfless devotion to desolate Naomi (1:16-17; 2:11-12; 3:10; 4:15) and on Boaz's kindness to these two widows (chs. 2 - 4). He presents striking examples of lives that embody in their daily affairs the self-giving love that fulfills God's law (Lev 19:18; cf. Ro 13:10). Such love also reflects God's love, in a marvelous joining of human and divine actions (compare 2:12 with 3:9). In God's benevolence such lives are blessed and are made a blessing. It may seem surprising that one who reflects God's love so clearly is a Moabitess (see map, p. 486). Yet her complete loyalty to the Israelite family into which she has been received by marriage and her total devotion to her desolate mother-in-law mark her as a true daughter of Israel and a worthy ancestress of David. She strikingly exemplifies the truth that participation in the coming kingdom of God is decided, not by blood and birth, but by the conformity of one's life to the will of God through the "obedience that comes from faith" (Ro 1:5). Her place in the ancestry of David signifies that all nations will be represented in the kingdom of David's greater Son. As an episode in the ancestry of David, the book of Ruth sheds light on his role in the history of redemption. Redemption is a key concept throughout the account; the Hebrew word in its various forms occurs 23 times. The book is primarily a story of Naomi's transformation from despair to happiness through the selfless, God-blessed acts of Ruth and Boaz. She moves from emptiness to fullness (1:21; 3:17; see notes on 1:1,3,5-6,12,21-22; 3:17; 4:15), from destitution (1:1-5) to security and hope (4:13-17). Similarly, Israel was transformed from national desperation at the death of Eli (1Sa 4:18) to peace and prosperity in the early days of Solomon (1Ki 4:20-34; 5:4) through the selfless devotion of David, a true descendant of Ruth and Boaz. The author thus reminded Israel that the reign of the house of David, as the means of God's benevolent rule in Israel, held the prospect of God's promised peace and rest. But this rest would continue only so long as those who participated in the kingdom -- prince and people alike -- reflected in their daily lives the selfless love exemplified by Ruth and Boaz. In Jesus, the great "son of David" (Mt 1:1), and his redemptive work, the promised blessings of the kingdom of God find their fulfillment. Literary Features The book of Ruth is a Hebrew short story, told with consummate skill. Among historical narratives in Scripture it is unexcelled in its compactness, vividness, warmth, beauty and dramatic effectiveness -- an exquisitely wrought jewel of Hebrew narrative art. Marvelously symmetrical throughout (see Outline), the action moves from a briefly sketched account of distress (1:1-5; 71 words in Hebrew) through four episodes to a concluding account of relief and hope that is drawn with equal brevity (4:13-17; 71 words in Hebrew). The crucial turning point occurs exactly midway (see note on 2:20). The opening line of each of the four episodes signals its main development (1:6, the return; 2:1, the meeting with Boaz; 3:1, finding a home for Ruth; 4:1, the decisive event at the gate), while the closing line of each episode facilitates transition to what follows (see notes on 1:22; 2:23; 3:18; 4:12)...

13:: THE HOLY BIBLE The Book of Philippians

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 24.09.2021 · 06:02:58 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· THE HOLY BIBLE The Book of Philippians Introduction to Philippians Author, Date, and Recipients The apostle Paul wrote this letter to the Christians in Philippi, probably from Rome c. A.D. 62. Theme Paul encourages the Philippians to live as citizens of a heavenly city, growing in their commitment to serve God and one another. Jesus is the supreme example of this way of life. Paul, Timothy, and Epaphroditus try to be good examples as well. Purpose Paul wrote to the Philippians from prison. He had several purposes in mind: (1) to tell them that Epaphroditus had recovered from a serious illness; (2) to encourage them in their faith; (3) to assure them that he was still in good spirits; and (4) to thank them for their continued support. Key Themes Christians need to keep making spiritual progress (1:12, 25; 3:12–16). Such progress requires a proper spiritual outlook (1:5–11; 2:1–11; 3:7, 15; 4:7–9). Christ is the supreme example for the Christian. Mature Christians can also serve as role models (1:12–26; 2:5–11, 19–30; 3:3–17; 4:9). Suffering will come, but Christians can still be joyful (1:12–26; 2:14–15; 4:4, 11–13, 19). Prayer is crucial for maintaining a joyful Christian life (1:3–11; 4:5–7). Christians can enjoy rich relationships with one another; they can be united in service to promote the gospel (1:4, 7, 24–27; 2:1–4, 19–30; 4:2–4, 14). Keeping the law cannot provide a right standing with God; believers are saved only through their faith in Jesus Christ (3:2–10). Jesus is fully God and fully man. Because of his suffering on the cross, he is now glorified as Lord and Christ (2:5–11). Outline Greeting and Prayer (1:1–11) Paul’s Reflections on His Imprisonment (1:12–30) Encouragement to Humble Service (2:1–30) Opponents of the Gospel: Where Does Righteousness Come From? (3:1–21) Concluding Encouragement and Thanksgiving (4:1–23) The Setting of Philippians c. A.D. 62 Paul wrote his letter to the Philippians while in prison, probably in Rome. Philippi was the site of a key military victory by Augustus Caesar, and as a result it was made a Roman colony. Philippi was the first city in present-day Europe where Paul established a church.

14:: THE HOLY BIBLE The Book of Ephesians

··· ··· ··· ··· The Holy Bible The Book of Ephesians Summary of the Book of Ephesians This summary of the book of Ephesians provides information about the title, author(s), date of writing, chronology, theme, theology, outline, a brief overview, and the chapters of the Book of Ephesians. Author, Date and Place of Writing The author identifies himself as Paul (1:1; 3:1; cf. 3:7,13; 4:1; 6:19-20). Some have taken the absence of the usual personal greetings and the verbal similarity of many parts to Colossians, among other reasons, as grounds for doubting authorship by the apostle Paul. However, this was probably a circular letter, intended for other churches in addition to the one in Ephesus (see notes on 1:1,15; 6:21-23). Paul may have written it about the same time as Colossians, c. a.d. 60, while he was in prison at Rome (see 3:1; 4:1; 6:20; see also chart, p. 2261). The City of Ephesus Ephesus was the most important city in western Asia Minor (now Turkey). It had a harbor that at that time opened into the Cayster River (see map, p. 2429), which in turn emptied into the Aegean Sea (see map, p. 2599). Because it was also at an intersection of major trade routes, Ephesus became a commercial center. It boasted a pagan temple dedicated to the Roman goddess Diana (Greek Artemis); cf. Ac 19:23-31. Paul made Ephesus a center for evangelism for about three years (see note on Ac 19:10), and the church there apparently flourished for some time, but later needed the warning of Rev 2:1-7. Theological Message Unlike several of the other letters Paul wrote, Ephesians does not address any particular error or heresy. Paul wrote to expand the horizons of his readers, so that they might understand better the dimensions of God's eternal purpose and grace and come to appreciate the high goals God has for the church. The letter opens with a sequence of statements about God's blessings, which are interspersed with a remarkable variety of expressions drawing attention to God's wisdom, forethought and purpose. Paul emphasizes that we have been saved, not only for our personal benefit, but also to bring praise and glory to God. The climax of God's purpose, "when the times will have reached their fulfillment," is to bring all things in the universe together under Christ (1:10). It is crucially important that Christians realize this, so in 1:15-23 Paul prays for their understanding (a second prayer occurs in 3:14-21). Having explained God's great goals for the church, Paul proceeds to show the steps toward their fulfillment. First, God has reconciled individuals to himself as an act of grace (2:1-10). Second, God has reconciled these saved individuals to each other, Christ having broken down the barriers through his own death (2:11-22). But God has done something even beyond this: He has united these reconciled individuals in one body, the church. This is a "mystery" not fully known until it was revealed to Paul (3:1-6). Now Paul is able to state even more clearly what God has intended for the church, namely, that it be the means by which he displays his "manifold wisdom" to the "rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms" (3:7-13). It is clear through the repetition of "heavenly realms" (1:3,20; 2:6; 3:10; 6:12) that Christian existence is not merely on an earthly plane. It receives its meaning and significance from heaven, where Christ is exalted at the right hand of God (1:20). Nevertheless, that life is lived out on earth, where the practical daily life of the believer continues to work out the purposes of God. The ascended Lord gave "gifts" to the members of his church to enable them to minister to one another and so promote unity and maturity (4:1-16). The unity of the church under the headship of Christ foreshadows the uniting of "all things in heaven and on earth" under Christ (1:10). The new life of purity and mutual deference stands in contrast to the old way of life without Christ (4:17 -- 6:9). Those who are "strong in the Lord" have victory over the evil one in the great spiritual conflict, especially through the power of prayer (6:10-20; see note on 1:3). Outline Greetings (1:1-2) The Divine Purpose: The Glory and Headship of Christ (1:3-14) Prayer That Christians May Realize God's Purpose and Power (1:15-23) Steps Toward the Fulfillment of God's Purpose (chs. 2-3) Salvation of Individuals by Grace (2:1-10) Reconciliation of Jew and Gentile through the Cross (2:11-18) Uniting of Jew and Gentile in One Household (2:19-22) Revelation of God's Wisdom through the Church (3:1-13) Prayer for Deeper Experience of God's Fullness (3:14-21) Practical Ways to Fulfill God's Purpose in the Church (4:1;6:20) Unity (4:1-6) Maturity (4:7-16) Renewal of Personal Life (4:17;5:20) Deference in Personal Relationships (5:21;6:9) Principle (5:21) Husbands and wives (5:22-33) Children and parents (6:1-4) Slaves and masters (6:5-9) Strength in the Spiritual Conflict (6:10-20) Conclusion, Final Greetings and Benediction (6:21-24)

15:: THE HOLY BIBLE The Book of Galatians

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 23.09.2021 · 16:09:34 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· THE HOLY BIBLE The Book of Galatians Introduction to Galatians Author, Date, and Recipients The apostle Paul wrote this letter about A.D. 48. The Galatians are probably believers in the churches of the southern region of the Roman province of Galatia. Paul is more critical of his audience here than in any of his other letters. Theme Christ’s death has brought in the age of the new covenant (3:23–26; 4:4–5, 24). People do not have to become Jews or follow the outward ceremonies of the Mosaic law in order to be Christians (2:3, 11–12, 14; 4:10). To require these things denies the heart of the gospel, which is justification by faith alone and not by keeping the “works of the law” (2:16). In this new age, Christians are to live in the guidance and power of the Spirit (chs. 5–6). Purpose False teachers have convinced the Galatians that they are required to be circumcised. The result is division within their church (5:15). Paul gives numerous reasons why they should return to the simple truth of the gospel. Key Themes In his sin-bearing death, Christ is a substitute for all Christians. He brings them into a new realm of freedom and life (1:4; 2:20; 3:13). The gospel of Christ comes from God alone—not from any human source. Paul himself is a living example of this. His conversion to Christ and his apostleship were not through human means. They came through direct revelation from Christ (1:1, 11–12, 15–20). Salvation comes not by works of law but by faith, which leads to justification (2:16). To require circumcision and other Mosaic laws as a supplement to faith is to fall back from the realm of grace and freedom and to come under the whole law and its curse, since perfect observance of the law is impossible (2:12–14, 16; 3:10; 4:10; 5:3). Old Testament Scripture itself testifies to the truth of justification by faith (Gen. 15:6; Hab. 2:4). Believers have died with Christ to sin and therefore have renounced the flesh (Gal. 5:24; 6:14). The Spirit is the source of power and guidance in the Christian life. He produces love and faith in the believer (5:6, 16, 18, 25). The Christian life is one of pleasing Christ. This requires willingness to suffer persecution for the sake of his cross (1:10; 6:12, 14). Outline Opening (1:1–9) Indirect Appeal: Paul’s Ministry and the Gospel (1:10–2:21) Direct Appeals to the Galatians (3:1–5:12) Life in the Spirit and Love (5:13–6:10) Final Warning (6:11–18) The Setting of Galatians c. A.D. 48 Paul’s letter to the Galatians was likely written to the churches he had established during his first missionary journey (Acts 13:1–14:28). He probably wrote the letter from his home church in Antioch in Syria, sometime before the Jerusalem council (Acts 15:1–31).

16:: THE HOLY BIBLE The Book of James

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 23.09.2021 · 09:14:04 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· THE HOLY BIBLE The Book of James Summary of the Book of James This summary of the book of James provides information about the title, author(s), date of writing, chronology, theme, theology, outline, a brief overview, and the chapters of the Book of James. Author The author identifies himself as James (1:1); he was probably the brother of Jesus and leader of the Jerusalem council (Ac 15). Four men in the NT have this name. The author of this letter could not have been the apostle James, who died too early (a.d. 44) to have written it. The other two men named James had neither the stature nor the influence that the writer of this letter had. James was one of several brothers of Christ, probably the oldest since he heads the list in Mt 13:55. At first he did not believe in Jesus and even challenged him and misunderstood his mission (Jn 7:2-5). Later he became very prominent in the church: He was one of the select individuals Christ appeared to after his resurrection (1co 15:7;). Paul called him a "pillar" of the church (gal 2:9). Paul, on his first post-conversion visit to Jerusalem, saw James (Gal 1:19). Paul did the same on his last visit (ac 21:18). When Peter was rescued from prison, he told his friends to tell James (ac 12:17). James was a leader in the important council of Jerusalem (ac 15:13). Jude could identify himself simply as "a brother of James" (jude 1:1), so well known was James. He was martyred c. a.d. 62. Date Some date the letter in the early 60s. There are indications, however, that it was written before a.d. 50: Its distinctively Jewish nature suggests that it was composed when the church was still predominantly Jewish. It reflects a simple church order -- officers of the church are called "elders" (5:14) and "teachers" (3:1). No reference is made to the controversy over Gentile circumcision. The Greek term synagoge ("synagogue" or "meeting") is used to designate the meeting or meeting place of the church (2:2). If this early dating is correct, this letter is the earliest of all the NT writings -- with the possible exception of Galatians. Recipients The recipients are identified explicitly only in 1:1: "the twelve tribes scattered among the nations." Some hold that this expression refers to Christians in general, but the term "twelve tribes" would more naturally apply to Jewish Christians. Furthermore, a Jewish audience would be more in keeping with the obviously Jewish nature of the letter (e.g., the use of the Hebrew title for God, kyrios sabaoth, "Lord Almighty," 5:4). That the recipients were Christians is clear from 2:1; 5:7-8. It has been plausibly suggested that these were believers from the early Jerusalem church who, after Stephen's death, were scattered as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus and Syrian Antioch (see Ac 8:1; 11:19 and notes). This would account for James's references to trials and oppression, his intimate knowledge of the readers and the authoritative nature of the letter. As leader of the Jerusalem church, James wrote as pastor to instruct and encourage his dispersed people in the face of their difficulties (see essay, p. 2539). Distinctive Characteristics Characteristics that make the letter distinctive are: (1) its unmistakably Jewish nature; (2) its emphasis on vital Christianity, characterized by good deeds and a faith that works (genuine faith must and will be accompanied by a consistent lifestyle); (3) its simple organization; (4) its familiarity with Jesus' teachings preserved in the Sermon on the Mount (compare 2:5 with Mt 5:3; 3:10-12 with Mt 7:15-20; 3:18 with Mt 5:9; 5:2-3 with Mt 6:19-20; 5:12 with Mt 5:33-37); (5) its similarity to OT wisdom writings such as Proverbs (see essay, p. 970); (6) its excellent Greek. Outline Greetings (1:1) Trials and Temptations (1:2-18) The Testing of Faith (1:2-12) The Source of Temptation (1:13-18) Listening and Doing (1:19-27) Favoritism Forbidden (2:1-13) Faith and Deeds (2:14-26) Taming the Tongue (3:1-12) Two Kinds of Wisdom (3:13-18) Warning against Worldliness (ch. 4) Quarrelsomeness (4:1-3) Spiritual Unfaithfulness (4:4) Pride (4:5-10) Slander (4:11-12) Boasting (4:13-17) Warning to Rich Oppressors (5:1-6) Miscellaneous Exhortations (5:7-20) Concerning Patience in Suffering (5:7-11) Concerning Oaths (5:12) Concerning the Prayer of Faith (5:13-18) Concerning Those Who Wander from the Truth (5:19-20)

··· ··· ··· ··· THE HOLY BIBLE The Book of 2 Timothy Introduction to 2 Timothy Timeline Author, Date, and Recipient Paul wrote this second letter to Timothy during his second imprisonment in Rome, shortly before his death. This imprisonment was after the one recorded in Acts 28. He probably wrote it in A.D. 64–65, though some would place it as late as 67. Theme Paul gives Timothy a bold, clear call to continue in the gospel despite suffering. Purpose Several people have abandoned Paul while he has been in prison, and several others are away on assignments (1:15; 4:9–12). In such a time, Paul’s memories of Timothy’s sincerity and devotion are especially touching (1:3–5). Paul thinks he will die soon (4:6–8), so he writes this final message to Timothy. Paul urges Timothy to stand firm and asks him to come for one final visit before Paul is executed. Though Paul’s death is near, he does not know just when it will come. Paul also asks Timothy to bring his books and parchments, so that he can keep studying and writing until the end. Second Timothy is very personal. It is a final letter to a close friend and coworker. Paul encourages Timothy to continue in faithfulness and offers his own life as an example for Timothy to follow. What he calls on Timothy to do, he himself has done already. Key Themes Suffering is part of the Christian experience (1:8, 12; 2:3, 9; 3:11–12; 4:5, 14–18). The Christian response to suffering is steady faith by God’s power (1:8; 2:1, 11–13; 4:1–8). The gospel is the basis for the Christian’s endurance (1:9–11; 2:8–10). The Scriptures have power to save and to preserve (2:15; 3:15–17; 4:1–2). True believers will continue in the faith. Failure to do so proves one is not truly converted (2:11–13, 19; 3:14; 4:7, 10). False teaching is deadly and must be dealt with firmly (2:16–18, 23–26; 3:1–9; 4:3–5). Outline Opening (1:1–2) Enduring for the Gospel (1:3–2:13) Dealing with False Teachers (2:14–3:9) Contrasting Timothy with False Teachers (3:10–4:8) Conclusion (4:9–22) The Setting of 2 Timothy c. A.D. 64–67 Paul probably wrote 2 Timothy during a second imprisonment in Rome following a fourth missionary journey that is not recorded in Acts. Expecting that death would come soon, Paul wrote this “farewell” letter to Timothy, who was at Ephesus, urging him to stand firm and asking him to come for one final visit.
