In 2018, Birgit Weyhe joined a room of German comics scholars at a GSA (German Studies Association) panel on diversity and inclusion in German-language comics to bear witness to a presentation by Dr. Brett Sterling that openly criticized her graphic novel Madgermanes (2016) for its representation of Blackness and cultural appropriation. While this commentary was far from welcome, it marked the start of the authorâs journey in revaluating her power and privilege as a comics artist. Soon thereafter, Weyhe met Dr. Priscilla Layne, an Associate Professor of German Weyhe und Layne in Montreal Studies at UNC-Chapel Hill with Caribbean roots. Over the course of the next few years, Weyhe and Layne collaborated on the graphic novel Rude Girl (2022), which explore Layneâs life growing up in Chicago, experience of racism, and path to German studies, all the while interrogating what it means for a White artist to represent Black lives.
This panel will take the form of a conversation with the co-creators of Rude Girl, discussing Layne and Weyheâs collaboration and the role of comics in intersectional explorations of Black identity.

In 2018, Birgit Weyhe joined a room of German comics scholars at a GSA (German Studies Association) panel on diversity and inclusion in German-language comics to bear witness to a presentation by Dr. Brett Sterling that openly criticized her graphic novel Madgermanes (2016) for its representation of Blackness and cultural appropriation. While this commentary was far from welcome, it marked the start of the author’s journey in revaluating her power and privilege as a comics artist. Soon thereafter, Weyhe met Dr. Priscilla Layne, an Associate Professor of German Weyhe und Layne in Montreal Studies at UNC-Chapel Hill with Caribbean roots. Over the course of the next few years, Weyhe and Layne collaborated on the graphic novel Rude Girl (2022), which explore Layne’s life growing up in Chicago, experience of racism, and path to German studies, all the while interrogating what it means for a White artist to represent Black lives.
This panel will take the form of a conversation with the co-creators of Rude Girl, discussing Layne and Weyhe’s collaboration and the role of comics in intersectional explorations of Black identity.
This event is co-sponsored by the German Studies Association's Comics Studies Network, the UBC Comic Studies Cluster, and the Department of Classics, Modern Languages, and Linguistics at Concordia University.

En tant que personne queer, lesbienne et femme sakha, elle retrouve son « moi » en décolonisant son expérience. Ses grands-parents ont été contraints de quitter leur terre pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale et le changement climatique mondial transforme progressivement leur ancienne maison en un autre lieu. Les autochtones de Yakoutie peuvent-ils trouver une nouvelle patrie ailleurs ou doivent-ils continuer à vivre sur la terre de leurs ancêtres? Tatiana tente de répondre à cette question dans son expression artistique. Tatiana est lauréate du prix 2020 du magazine littéraire Znamya. Elle vit à Yakoutsk.
Le format principal format du projet interdisciplinaire transfrontalier « The Right To Be Cold » était une chaîne de résidences circumpolaires qui avait lieu à l'année 2021. Le thème central était le changement climatique, qui met au défi et modifie fondamentalement les conditions de vie dans les régions nordiques. Les questions relatives aux jeux liés aux connaissances autochtones, à l’écologie et à la justice climatique ont été au centre des projets. Tatiana Philippova is a writer, focused on fragmentary prose. That’s how she as a queer person, a lesbian and a Sakha woman recollects her «self» by decolonizing her experience. Her grandparents were forced to leave their land during the WW II, now global climate change gradually transforms their former home into some other place. Can modern Indigenous people of Yakutia find new homeland elsewhere or should they continue to live on their ancestors land – this is the question she tries to answer in her expression. Tatiana is a winner of Znamya literature magazine award 2020. She lives in Yakutsk.Tatiana Filippova was resident at Malakta and in Røst.
The main format of the transdisciplinary cross-border project "The Right To Be Cold" is a residency chain in the circumpolar north that took place in the year 2021. Overarching theme in all of this is the climate change, which is fundamentally challenging and changing the northern living conditions. In particular, issues of indigenous knowledge, ecology, climate justice and culture were the focus of the projects.

Utilisant des méthodes de travail multidisciplinaires, dont les ateliers d’art communautaires dirigés par des artistes, l’art environnemental et la collaboration entre l’art et la science, Tanja pratique son art sous la forme d’arts visuels, d’installations, de photographies de documentation et de récits à travers l’autoréflexion, la simplification, la représentation et la couleur. Tanja Koistinen est une Laponne liée à la culture samie d’Inari par ses ancêtres, la patrie de sa famille (Njellim, Sapmi) et ses moyens de subsistance. Elle vit et travaille actuellement à Äkäslompolo, dans le nord-ouest de la Laponie, en Finlande.

Tanja studies diverse identities in the North. Using multi-disciplinary working methods, such as artist-led community art workshops, environmental art and art & science collaboration, Tanja builds her art in the forms of visual arts, installation, documentation photography and storytelling through self-reflection, simplifying, portraying and color. Tanja Koistinen is a lappish person, who is connected to Inari Sámi culture through her ancestry, family homeland (Njellim, Sapmi) and livelihood. Currently she works and lives in Äkäslompolo, North-West Lapland, Finland. Tanja Koistinen was resident in Sakha.

Elle a obtenu son baccalauréat en beaux-arts à l’Otis College of Art and Design et sa maîtrise en beaux-arts au California Institute of the Arts. De 2009 à 2014, elle a travaillé dans l’enseignement des arts en Californie. Après son retour en Sibérie en 2015, elle a commencé à travailler sur plusieurs projets de films sur sa ville natale et les régions qui l’entourent. Son projet vidéo se penche sur deux groupes autochtones locaux auxquels elle appartient (Evenk et Sakha). Son œuvre a été projetée et montrée dans divers lieux artistiques en Californie et en Russie.

Svetlana Romanova was born in Yakutsk, Russia and studied visual arts in Los Angeles. She has received her BFA at Otis College of Art and Design, and MFA at California Institute of the Arts. From 2009 to 2014, she lived and worked in arts education in California. After returning to Siberia in 2015, she started working on several film projects about her hometown and regions around it. Her video project is an investigation of two local Indigenous groups that she belongs to (Evenk and Sakha). Her work has been screened and shown in various art venues in California and Russia. Svetlana Romanova was resident in Nunavik and in Sápmi.

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 06.09.2022 · 17:46:37 ··· ··· ··· ··· ··· ··· Basée à Montréal, au Québec, Niap (Nancy Saunders) est une artiste multidisciplinaire primée qui partage son temps entre la ville et sa communauté natale de Kuujjuaq, au Nunavik — un lieu qui continue d'influencer profondément son travail. Travaillant à travers les médias, Niap étudie de manière réfléchie son héritage culturel et son identité en tant que femme Inuk à travers sa pratique. Au moyen de la peinture, de la performance, de la sculpture et de la photographie, Niap a produit un large éventail d’œuvres, y compris des murales, des installations immersives et des portraits. Niap était artiste en résidence à Sakha et à Malakta.

Based in Montreal, QC, Niap (Nancy Saunders) is an award-winning multidisciplinary artist who divides her time between the city and her home community of Kuujjuaq, Nunavik – a place that continues to deeply influence her work. Working across media, Niap thoughtfully investigates her cultural heritage and identity as an Inuk woman through her practice. Working across painting, performance, sculpture and photography, Niap has produced a wide ranging body of work from murals to immersive installations to portraiture. Niap was resident in Sakha and at Malakta.

Son travail s’inspire des paysages et des modes de vie du nord de la Norvège, ainsi que des techniques et matériaux traditionnels de tissage. Elle s’efforce de mettre en lumière les processus de culture des ressources traditionnelles dans un contexte contemporain durable. Marije est diplômée de l’UWC Adriatic (2014) et de la Kunstskolen i Bergen (2018). Elle a passé les deux premières années de sa licence en arts visuels au KMD de Bergen (2018-2020), et a obtenu son diplôme à l’Académie des arts de Tromsø en mai 2021.

Marije Jenssen is a Norwegian-Sámi painter and installation artist from Balsfjord, Norway. Her work is inspired by Northern Norwegian landscape, lifestyles and traditional materials and techniques within weaving. Her focus lies on highlighting the processes of cultivating traditional resources in a sustainable contemporary context. Marije graduated from UWC Adriatic (2014) and Kunstskolen i Bergen (2018). She spent the first two years of her Visual Art Bachelor at KMD in Bergen (2018-'20), and completed her degree at Tromsø Art Academy in May 2021. Marije Jenssen will be a resident in Nunavik.

En tant que mère, amie, amante, étudiante, sa recherche et sa création portent sur l’amour transpersonnel et décolonial. Entre kitsch et existentialisme, son écriture est ancrée dans le territoire et l’intériorité, combinant ses identités québécoise et ilnue. Elle est l'auteur de trois livres : Béante, Frayer, et Chauffer le dehors. En 2018, elle a été lauréate du prix Indigenous Voices. Elle vit à L'Anse-Saint-Jean, au Québec. Marie-Andrée Gill était résidente à Sápmi et à Røst.

Marie-Andrée Gill is Pekuakamishkueu and identifies primarily as a poet. Mother, friend, lover, student, her research and creative work concern transpersonal and decolonial love. Bridging kitsch and existentialism, her writing is rooted in territory and interiority, combining her Quebec and Ilnu identities. She is the author of three books: Béante, Frayer, and Chauffer le dehors. In 2018 she was the winner of the Indigenous Voices Award. She lives in L’Anse-Saint-Jean, Quebec.
