··· ··· ··· ··· Ballroom Lives: 1: The Thirties BBC Radio 2 - Sunday 1st April 2001 Lionel Blair recalls the heyday of British ballroom dancing. It kept alive the quickstep, jive and rumba from the thirties to the sixties and, at its peak, was the launching pad for three out of four marriages. This programme meets the original dance-floor enthusiasts as well as the musicians and bandleaders. The import of American jazz after the First World War gave rise to a dance band craze all over Britain. A trip to Blackpool's Tower Ballroom triggers some key memories. Contributors include Harry Gold and Edmund Whitehouse, and music by Bertini, Victor Silvester, Roy Fox and others.

I am so happy that we can share this recording which we found in our parental house. The music of Edmundo Ros played an important role in my childhood. I hope you all will enjoy listening to this recording as I do.

··· ··· ··· ··· Radio 2 Top Tunes BBC Radio 2 - 27th August 1977 Norrie Paramor and the BBC Midland Radio Orchestra play the week's most popular tunes from Radio 2 programmes. Introduced by Don Moss 1. Smile 2. Nobody Does It Better - arranged by Johnny Douglas 3. Southern Comfort 4. We're All Alone 5. Hasta Manana 6. 633 Squadron - arranged by Johnny Douglas 7. Oh Lori 8. Cool Wind From The North 9. Is This The Way To Amarillo 10. Beautiful Rose 11. The Last Farewell 12. Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Ole Oak Tree 13. Angelo The sound quality is variable, but generally it is worth listening to. I don't know if the cassette tape has deteriorated or if, in pre-digital days, it was an issue with the tuning. Originally in Stereo, I recorded it in Mono, which suggests reception wasn't very good. At the time I was living in a tiny town in the North of Scotland, and radio coverage wasn't always ideal. Nevertheless I enjoyed this programme.

Sing -As -You-Dance Medley: Give Me A Cosy Little Corner; Roamin' In The Gloamin'; Waiting At The Church (The Barn Dance) 15. If You Knew Susie This is another incomplete programme from early 1981, with some performances incomplete. BBC Radio 2 Ballroom was a long running series, and by this stage Sydney Thompson's Orchestra was a regular. I liked, and still do, the sound, style and excellence of this orchestra. The arrangements are worth listening to, although this was very much a "dance" orchestra. Sydney was a dancer, not a musician, so he engaged the very best to direct his players. Leon Young is probably not a name many now will remember, but he must get credit for the quality of this music. I hope this upload will give a flavour of the programme.

··· ··· ··· ··· Hubert Gregg presented "Thanks For The Memory" from 1970 until his death in 2004 at the age of 89. This BBC Radio 2 weekly half-hour programme was a nostalgic look back to music from the 1920s onwards, with personal reminisces of the artists by Gregg, who had been an actor and songwriter. His style was old world. A week was a "sennight", a CD was a "shaving mirror" and Radio 2 was "Wireless Two". This example was broadcast on 22nd August 2003, unfortunately missing the first few minutes, and features the following recordings: 1. Powder Your Face With Sunshine - Evelyn Knight 2. The Nearness Of You - Elisabeth Welch 3. L'Anglais avec son sang-froid - Paddy Roberts 4. I Double Dare You - Carroll Gibbons & his Boyfriends 5. Comedy sketch - Groucho Marx & Tallulah Bankhead 6. There's A Little Bit of Piccadilly - Hebert Gregg with Gordon Langford at the piano 7. It's Murder - Lil Armstrong & her Orchestra 8. Time Was - Don Ameche & Connee Boswell Friday Night Is Music Night, Live from the Mermaid Theatre, Blackfriars, London, presented by Richard Baker. Edward Warren conducts the BBC Concert Orchestra.

This example was broadcast on 15th August 2003 and features the following recordings: 1. On The Sunny Side Of The Street - Harry Richman 2. I've Got Five Dollars - Jeri Southern 3. You'll Have To Swing It (Mr Paganini) - Sophie Tucker 4. Whoopee - Eddie Cantor 5. I'd Rather Charleston - Fred & Adele Astaire 6. Things Are Getting Back To Normal Now - Hubert Gregg 7. Nobody's Sweetheart - The Charioteers 8. Bar on The Piccolla Marina - Sir Noel Coward
