Over the past several months, crews have been hard at work removing the building’s corner to make way for our welcoming new Stephen Avenue entrance at the JR Shaw Centre for Arts & Culture. We can hardly wait for the finished product! In the meantime, check out this timelapse from February 2023 to April 2024 to see how far we’ve come.

3:: Globally Renowned Artist Maya Lin Revealed as Designer of Glenbow’s Rooftop Terrace

··· ··· ··· ··· Glenbow is ecstatic to announce that internationally recognized artist Maya Lin will design the rooftop terrace in the museum’s new home at the JR Shaw Centre for Arts & Culture. The 13,000-square-foot terrace will be a transformational addition to Glenbow and to downtown Calgary, offering a public amenity that further establishes the city as a global arts and culture destination. The space overlooks downtown Calgary, with western views of Stephen Avenue and iconic surrounding buildings like the Calgary Tower, TELUS Sky and The Bow. The terrace will include an all-season pavilion, event spaces, sculpture and gardens, along with a skylight and oculus to filter natural light into the museum. As a leader across these fields, Lin is uniquely qualified to plan this space. This will be her first project in Canada. ··· ··· ··· ··· Glenbow’s President & CEO Nicholas Bell was recently honoured with the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal. This commemorative medal serves to honour significant contributions and achievements of Albertans and was a way for Alberta to honour Her Majesty. Nicholas joined Glenbow in 2019 after several years successfully spearheading major strategic changes at museums in the eastern United States. Originally from Vancouver, he is also an author and editor of over ten books on art, museums and contemporary culture. Glenbow’s building, programming and approaches are all being transformed to reflect the needs of our community. We know our shared future will be brighter when we make arts and culture experiences accessible, sustainable and community focused. The awarding of this medal highlights both Nicholas’s exceptional work, his leadership in bringing that vision to life at Glenbow, and his exceptional advancement of arts and culture experiences in Canada.
