He describes also his passion for contemporary art, a moral obligation that he owes to Claude Monet. A graduate in Lettres Modernes, History, Art History and Archaeology (University of Paris I, 1969-1975) and Museology (Ecole du Louvre, 1979), Philippe Piguet was has been Professor of Art History at the Institut Supérieur des Carrières Artistiques (ICART, Ecoles Denis Huisman, Paris) since 1986. For over twenty years, he has also given numerous lectures throughout France and beyond. Although his field of study covers the period from the mid-20th century to the present day, his main interests lie in the Impressionist period - more specifically Claude Monet, whose great-great-grandson he is - and in contemporary art as it has developed since the 1960s. From March-May 2024, Sotheby’s will host an exciting program of auctions, events and talks in London, Paris, New York, and Hong Kong that will honor the figures who shaped the cultural landscape for more than a century alongside Contemporary artists who have been inspired by the spirit of Impressionism. 20:: Tim Marlow's Must-See Museum Shows: July 2023

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 29.06.2023 · 18:16:41 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Looking for some inspiration for your next museum visit? This month, we're taking a tour of four of the world's most exciting and innovative museum exhibitions with Tim Marlow, CEO and Director of the Design Museum, London. Monet: in Full Light Grimaldi Forum, Monaco 8 July–3 September 2023 Image Claude Monet made his reputation in Northern France, but his first visit to the Riviera in 1853 was a pivotal moment in his illustrious career. Monet: in Full Light features over 100 paintings – at the heart of which is a group of canvases he made in Antibe, Roquebrune, Bordighera and of course, Monte Carlo. They see his palette brighten and the sharp clear light of the south of France begin to illuminate his work profoundly. Given its location, Monet’s impact extends well beyond what we see on the walls of the galleries. Matisse by Matisse UCCA Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing 15 July–15 October 2023 Image Matisse by Matisse is the artist’s first solo exhibition in China and looks to be well worth the wait. Displaying over 200 works, it will span seven intensely creative decades, from oils to textiles. With all drawn from the personal collection of the great French artist, who had strong views on how his art should be displayed, there is a tantalising whiff of posthumous self-curation. Tree & Serpent: Early Buddhist Art in India Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York 21 July–13 November 2023 Image Tree & Serpent: Early Buddhist Art in India charts the inspiring impact that Buddhism had on art and the religious landscape in ancient India from over 600 years starting around 200 BCE. More than 125 objects will feature, including major loans from India, spanning stone sculptures to metalwork, ivory, ceramics, jewelry, as well as, of course, painting. The exhibition promises to be enlightening in every sense of the word, dynamic on occasion, but also meditative. Grayson Perry: Smash Hits Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh 22 July–12 November 2023 Image Over 80 works will be organised thematically and will wrestle with Sir Grayson’s lifelong preoccupations of masculinity, sexuality, class, religion, politics, and identity. The show will include plenty of pots, as well as prints, tapestries and a custom-built motorcycle with a shrine on the back housing Alan Measles, Grayson’s personal God and childhood teddy bear. Like the artist himself, the exhibition, Grayson Perry: Smash Hits, will be vividly entertaining as well as intelligently questioning.

21:: Royal Jewels: Symbols of Power

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 29.06.2023 · 10:28:19 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Spanning the late 19th century to the Belle Époque era, three pieces of antique jewellery from a Private Collection reveal how royal houses shaped jewellery as enduring symbols of power. These royal jewels, each distinct in their forms: a diamond tiara owned by the Queen of Spain, a diamond brooch depicting the arms of the Austrian empire and the Belle Époque diamond jigha – serve as a testament to the incredible skill and craftsmanship of the artisans of the 19th to 20th century through their intricate designs showcasing the traditions of each region.

22:: The Painter’s Painter: Diego Velázquez’s Cristoforo Segni

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 28.06.2023 · 16:25:01 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Velázquez painted this striking portrait of Cristoforo Segni, Maggiordomo to Pope Innocent X, around 1650, during his second trip to Rome, a period in his career when he created some of his greatest work in the realm of portraiture. As Maggiordomo to His Holiness from 1645 to 1653, Cristoforo Segni was a high-ranking member of the clergy appointed by the Pope to oversee the apostolic palaces. This perceptive portrayal of a man well known to Velázquez is testament to the artist's ability to capture character and to his technical virtuosity. Other subsidiary parts of the painting were executed by the Cremonese painter Pietro Martire Neri, who according to Antonio Palomino worked alongside Velázquez during his second sojourn in the Eternal City, perhaps because the portrait was left unfinished when Velázquez left Rome. Diego Velazquez’s portrait of Cristoforo Segni will be offered as a part of Sotheby’s Old Master & 19th Century Paintings Evening Auction on 5 July at Sotheby’s London as a part of the Summer Season.

24:: Sotheby's Talks: Facing Now: Why Portraits Still Matter

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 27.06.2023 · 12:22:13 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· The origins of portraiture stretch back for millennia as humans have always sought to recreate their own likeness. Simon Schama, Eleanor Nairne, and Helena Newman will explore the enduring power of portraiture to speak to major social concerns, posing questions such as: Why are we so captivated by the human likeness? What do portraits tell us about society and our changing world? And what can they reveal about who we are?

26:: Sotheby's Spotlight: Master Sculpture from Four Millennia

27:: Bouke de Vries Reinterprets the Satire of Hogarth

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 22.06.2023 · 15:44:43 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· We sit down with artist, Bouke de Vries, in an exploration of William Hogarth's series of satirical paintings, present at the Soane Museum in London alongside Bouke's ceramic interpretation. The Summer Season at Sotheby's London features another stellar piece by Hogarth, being offered in the Old Master & 19th Century Paintings Evening Auction on 5 July. Taste in High Life is an exceptional work and the last major satirical painting by Hogarth left in private hands. Commissioned in 1742 by one of the artist’s major patrons, Mary Edwards (1705–1743) – the richest woman in England – it is a tour de force of satirical wit and social caricature, and a forerunner to one of the artist’s most celebrated series, Marriage à-la-Mode (National Gallery, London; fig. 1), painted the following year. Indeed, it deals with many of the same issues, lampooning high society and ridiculing what Hogarth saw as the dandified aristocracy for the ridiculousness of their obsession with foreign fashions and imported luxuries. Preserved in exceptional condition, it is the first significant painting by William Hogarth – perhaps the first great English artist – to have appeared for sale on the open market for half a century.

28:: Expert Voices: Peter Paul Rubens Saint Sebastian Tended by Angels & Jacob Jordaens Ecce Homo

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 21.06.2023 · 23:00:15 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Art Historian, Andrew Graham-Dixon delves into two masterpieces of portraiture, Saint Sebastian Tended by Angels by Sir Peter Paul Rubens, and Ecce Homo by Jacob Jordaens. Rubens painted his earliest depiction of Saint Sebastian most likely for his Genoese patron Ambrogio Spinola, a General in the service of the Spanish Hapsburgs and a defender of the Catholic faith. Saint Sebastian was a Roman soldier, a captain in the Praetorian guard and a Christian, whose martyrdom at the hands of archers was ordered by the Emperor Diocletian. A decade later we have Jordaens’ startlingly original nocturne, Ecce Homo, lit dramatically from the left, depicting the moment when Pontius Pilate, seen elderly and bearded to the left of Christ with hand outstretched, exclaims ‘Ecce Homo’ (John 19: 5). Jordaens, along with Anthony van Dyck, studied with Rubens in his Antwerp studio, and their lives and careers were entwined together, three giants of the Flemish Baroque. Both works are being offered in the Old Master & 19th Century Paintings Evening Auction on 5 July at Sotheby’s London.

29:: Loyal Down to the Buzzer: Michael Jordan’s Olympic Gold Medal ‘Dream Team’ Jacket

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 21.06.2023 · 18:34:01 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· This jacket is perhaps the most important ‘Dream Team’ item to ever surface publicly, and is also potentially the most controversial within the parameters of Jordan’s illustrious career. Worn by Michael Jordan as he accepted the Gold Medal for his victory and leadership as part of the now iconic 1992 ‘Dream Team,’ Jordan was vehemently against wearing this Reebok jacket due to his loyalty to his longtime business partner, Nike. This jacket is many things. It’s a symbol of Michael Jordan’s Gold Medal performance as part of arguably the greatest basketball team ever assembled, ‘The Dream Team.’ It represents a milestone in terms of how the National Basketball Association was able to build its audience on the global stage, and finally, this jacket is a representation of Michael’s loyalty to Nike, the company that believed in him from the very inception of his professional career, and is still such an important part of his life. The Dream Team | Part I auction will take place at Sotheby’s New York on 28 June.
