One of my early memories is of me riding a roller coaster with my dad. This roller coaster was temporarily set up in the parking lot of The Great Eastern Shopping Center near our house. It was my first time on a roller coaster... Maybe my first time even seeing a roller coaster. I was perhaps four years old. The roller coaster began going fast, rattling and bouncing us around. I remember crying, begging Dad to make it stop. As I remember it, he asked the ride operator to do just that. The roller coaster stopped and we got off.
In the story Mark has for us today, Jesus is crossing the Sea of Galilee on a boat with his disciples. While Jesus catches a few Z’s, a storm comes up, so violent that the little boat is being swamped. Filled with fear, the disciples rouse Jesus. “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” Jesus says to the wind and waves, “Peace! Be still!” and just like with my dad, the ride stopped.
Dad probably wished I would have trusted him instead of letting my fear rule me. Does Jesus wish the same of us? Our text is Mark 4:35-41. I’m calling the message, When Jesus Is in Your Boat.

When I was a boy, my family had a vegetable garden. I once decided I would grow the largest pumpkin ever. I prepped the soil as best I could and bought some jumbo pumpkin seeds. (The seeds looked like every other pumpkin seed, but the pumpkins produced were supposed to be huge.) What I got were some good-sized pumpkins and the joy of seeing the vines and then the pumpkins appear. All with no herculean effort on my part.
Our text today is Mark 4:26-34 where Jesus tells two parables likening the kingdom of God to seeds and plants. The stories remind me that while we are graced with roles in the kingdom, so much happens without intervention on our part. Mostly we scatter seeds. I'm calling this message, The Secret Life of Seeds.

When it came to observing the sabbath, you might say the Pharisees of Jesus’s day were fundamentalists. They applied a strict literal interpretation of scripture and their own dogma/ ideologies to sabbath keeping. Jesus comes up against this group of religious leaders in Mark 2:23-3:6.
Fundamentalism isn’t the private domain of one group of people. Fundamentalists can be found in all walks of life... They are people who adhere to a very few core principles, or fundamentals. What do you suppose are Jesus’s fundamentals? I’m going to go with “love” above all. How about this for a title for this message? Jesus, the Love Fundamentalist.

The school year ended this week in Martin County. No doubt some high school students will be joining college students in looking for a summer job. Then there are the people looking for a new job, or even a new career. And once in a while we hear of someone whose job came looking for them. We encounter such a person in Sunday’s reading, Mark 2:13-18.
A man named Levi wakes up on a Monday morning in a dead-end job collecting taxes for Caesar plus a hefty surcharge for himself. Levi, known to us as Matthew, is ripe for a career change, and there’s no bigger career changer than Jesus. “Follow me,” says Jesus, and Matthew gets up from the tax booth and follows Jesus.
Still happens today, people having a “Matthew moment,” hearing Jesus call and up and following him. While it might involve a career change, it may be a matter of following Jesus right where we are.

Some people think that celebrating "Mother's Day" is a fading tradition. I find that interesting because everything I see says it is still an important event! Go to any card store the week before Mother's Day and you'll find the cards are almost gone. Your local grocery store will be stocked with flowers and candies. Why? Because most of us want to remember that special woman in our lives, our mother. Paul talks about the importance of a godly mother in the life of Timothy and the legacy of faith. We're going to honor the importance of godly people in our lives.

One of my early memories is of me riding a roller coaster with my dad. This roller coaster was temporarily set up in the parking lot of The Great Eastern Shopping Center near our house. It was my first time on a roller coaster... Maybe my first time even seeing a roller coaster. I was perhaps four years old. The roller coaster began going fast, rattling and bouncing us around. I remember crying, begging Dad to make it stop. As I remember it, he asked the ride operator to do just that. The roller coaster stopped and we got off.
In the story Mark has for us today, Jesus is crossing the Sea of Galilee on a boat with his disciples. While Jesus catches a few Z’s, a storm comes up, so violent that the little boat is being swamped. Filled with fear, the disciples rouse Jesus. “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” Jesus says to the wind and waves, “Peace! Be still!” and just like with my dad, the ride stopped.
Dad probably wished I would have trusted him instead of letting my fear rule me. Does Jesus wish the same of us? Our text is Mark 4:35-41. I’m calling the message, When Jesus Is in Your Boat.

When I was a boy, my family had a vegetable garden. I once decided I would grow the largest pumpkin ever. I prepped the soil as best I could and bought some jumbo pumpkin seeds. What I got were some good-sized pumpkins and the joy of seeing the vines and then the pumpkins appear. All with no herculean effort on my part.
Our text today is Mark 4:26-34 where Jesus tells two parables likening the kingdom of God to seeds and plants. The stories remind me that while we are graced with roles in the kingdom, so much happens without intervention on our part. Mostly we scatter seeds. When it came to observing the sabbath, you might say the Pharisees of Jesus’s day were fundamentalists. They applied a strict literal interpretation of scripture and their own dogma/ ideologies to sabbath keeping. Jesus comes up against this group of religious leaders in Mark 2:23-3:6.
Fundamentalism isn’t the private domain of one group of people. Fundamentalists can be found in all walks of life... They are people who adhere to a very few core principles, or fundamentals. What do you suppose are Jesus’s fundamentals? I’m going to go with “love” above all. How about this for a title for this message? Jesus, the Love Fundamentalist.

The school year ended this week in Martin County. No doubt some high school students will be joining college students in looking for a summer job. Then there are the people looking for a new job, or even a new career. And once in a while we hear of someone whose job came looking for them. We encounter such a person in Sunday’s reading, Mark 2:13-18.
A man named Levi wakes up on a Monday morning in a dead-end job collecting taxes for Caesar plus a hefty surcharge for himself. Levi, known to us as Matthew, is ripe for a career change, and there’s no bigger career changer than Jesus. “Follow me,” says Jesus, and Matthew gets up from the tax booth and follows Jesus.
Still happens today, people having a “Matthew moment,” hearing Jesus call and up and following him. While it might involve a career change, it may be a matter of following Jesus right where we are.

Weeds are a threat to wheat and every other crop. In Matthew 13:24-30, Jesus tells a parable comparing the kingdom of heaven to a field where a farmer sowed good seed. An enemy comes in the night and sows weeds among the wheat. When the plants come up, the workers recognize the weeds and offer to pull them. The farmer says no, because in pulling up the weeds they would uproot the wheat along with them. Leave them until harvest time; the weeds will be dealt with then.
Jesus interprets the parable in 13:36-43. The farmer is Jesus, the field is the world, and the good seed are the children of the kingdom. The weeds are the children of the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the devil.
Pulling up weeds, according to Jesus, is not part of our job description. The farmer will see to the weeds. What then is our responsibility?

Evan Baxter is a former newscaster who has been elected by the people of Buffalo, NY to represent them in Congress. Part of his campaign theme was "Change the World." The rest of the movie deals with how God (played by Morgan Freeman) uses him to change his world.
Not only did God use Noah to save humanity, but in a very similar way God seeks us to be used by Him to change our world as well. Are we listening to his voice? Are we willing to do what it takes?

In Matthew 10:34-36 we find some very stern words of Jesus. He says he’s come not to bring peace, but a sword. What happened to, “Blessed are the peacemakers?” (Matthew 5:9) We’ll do our best to make sense of this in the message but I’ll share with you right now that Jesus seeks top billing in our lives.

In Romans 5:1-5 we read that “suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope.” I recall memorizing this verse over 30 years ago. As I prefer to avoid suffering, I still wonder at the apostle Paul saying “we also boast in our sufferings.” What’s that about? It does seem like endurance, character and hope are much more than a consolation prize for those who suffer. They sound more like a silver lining.

It’s human nature to divide people into insiders and outsiders, “us” and “the other.” Sadly, our typical response to the Other is fear. As Christians we’re called to overcome our innate fear of the Other, recognizing that each of us is Other to God. Through Christ, God overcomes our Otherness and now we’re to embrace the Other. In Matthew 9:9-13 Jesus is challenged for dining with “tax collectors and sinners," the Other.

I'm a firm believer that God has got some form of discipleship in mind for everybody. Each follower of Jesus is called to something, and often to more than one thing. Sometimes what we're called to do isn't easy for us. What Christian hasn't asked at some point whether following Jesus is worth it? Jesus' words in Matthew 13:44-46 about treasure hidden in a field and a pearl of great value, remind me that, Oh yes, it's worth it! I'm titling Sunday's message, "Jesus Still Calls."
