Jan Pieterszoon (1561-1621) developed into a brilliant composer and improviser and his fame and influence reached far beyond our national borders. His influence on subsequent generations of composers, including Johann Sebastian Bach, can hardly be overestimated. When the Amsterdam city council passed into Protestant hands in 1578, it was no longer allowed to play the organ during the services. It then became Sweelinck's task to play before and after the service, especially the new psalm melodies with which the church people still had to become familiar. Some series of variations, including those on Psalm 140, must be seen in that light. The variation series is an amalgamation of separately created variations on Psalm 140 and The Ten Commandments.

The surviving manuscript of Bach (1685-1750) is dated 1720. The repeated bass theme, characteristic of the composition form chaconne, includes 4 bars. Each repetition, 64 in total (!), is a variation with its own character. The piece is written for violin solo: it requires the utmost from a violinist. A contemporary of Bach, Johann Friedrich Agricola, wrote that Bach often played this piece himself on clavichord (a keyboard instrument), and added as much harmony on the spot as he thought necessary at the time. Geert Bierling has often performed the ciaccona, following Agricola's description, improvising on organ and harpsichord, working out harmonies on the spot according to the basso continuo practice that was common in Bach's time.

In 1660 the collection Tabulatuur-boeck van Psalmen en Fantasyen was published. It contains the only known compositions by Anthonie van Noordt: ten psalms with variations and six fantasies for organ. We sing two verses of psalm 15. The harmonization is by Claude Goudimel (ca. 1514-1572), he is best known for his 4-part harmonizations of all psalms that he composed very shortly after the creation of the rhymes and melodies. The harmonizations are intended for domestic use.

Melodie naar Een dev. en̄ prof. boecxken, 1539. 1.Ons is gheboren een kindekijn noch claerre dan die sonne; dat sal ons alle vroude sijn al totter enghelen wonne. 2.Die sterren gheven ons lichten schijn al door den hemel ghedronghen. Maria die heeft haer lieve kint mit ganser minnen ghewonnen. 3. Si lechden in een cribbekijn mit haren sneewitten handen, si cusseden voor sijn mondelijn: des had haer seer verlanghen. 4. Dat kindekijn speelde der moeder toe mit sinen cleinen armkens; het lachede haer also soetelike toe mit bliden blenkenden oochkens. 5. These pieces are among the best composed in the Netherlands in the seventeenth century; they are still entirely in the tradition of the works of Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. Anthoni(e) van Noordt werd in 1652 benoemd tot organist van de Nieuwezijds Kapel in Amsterdam en in 1664 werd hij aangesteld als organist van de Nieuwe Kerk aldaar als opvolger van Dirk Janszoon Sweelinck (de zoon van Jan Pieterszoon). In 1660 verscheen de bundel Tabulatuur-boeck van Psalmen en Fantasyen. Het bevat de enig bekende composities van Anthonie van Noordt: tien psalmen met variaties en zes fantasieën voor orgel. Deze stukken behoren tot het beste wat er in de zeventiende eeuw in Nederland is gecomponeerd; ze staan nog geheel in de traditie van de werken van Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck.

Jacques van Oortmerssen (1950 – 2015) improvised this Rondeau during the International Improvisation Competition in Haarlem in July 1974, aged 24, on a theme given by Louis Toebosch, provided shortly before the improvisation. Shortly afterwards he reconstructed and published the Rondeau. Rondeau is a form of music in which verses are interspersed with a recurring chorus. The chorus sounds fortissimo. The couplets in between are very different variations on (parts of) the theme with their own unique color. The spontaneity of the improvisation is evident.

··· ··· ··· ··· Uit ‘Sept chorals-poèmes d'orgue pour les sept paroles du Xrist’ 1937. Charles Tournemire overleed in 1939. Hij had een sterk eindtijdgevoel en raakte in een diepe depressie door de dreigende inval door Duitsland. Hij was een leerling van Franck en leraar van Messiaen. Hij beschouwde het Choral als de hoogste uitdrukkingsvorm van orgelmuziek, en liet zich ongetwijfeld inspireren door de Trois Chorals van Franck. In dit 2e Choral geeft hij uitdrukking aan Lukas 23 vers 43, waar Jezus op de vraag van één van de twee misdadigers die met hem gekruisigd is ‘Heere, denk aan mij, als U in Uw Koninkrijk gekomen bent’ antwoordt: ‘Voorwaar, zeg Ik u, heden zult u met Mij in het paradijs zijn’. In dit Choral klinkt een paradijselijke sfeer als halverwege een zacht carillon klinkt, terwijl een koor van menselijke stemmen het koraal zingt (in de rechterhand gespeeld op het zwelwerk met de Vox Humana, wat menselijke stem betekent). Tournemire schroomt hierbij niet om soms 3-stemmige akkoorden in het pedaal toe te passen. Messiaen schrijft over de cyclus waaraan dit koraal ontleend is: ‘deze zeven stukken zijn de directe uiting van een krachtige originaliteit ten dienste gesteld vanuit een diep geloof’.
