Moving through numerous countries over several years, they immigrated to Canada in 2005 when Amiri was a teenager. Amiri’s choice of materials stems from autobiographical origins—her mother taught her to sew and her uncle was a tailor. Her textiles also reference the colors and fabrics she remembers in the bazaars and on the streets in Kabul. She sources her materials from an Afghan-owned shop in New York City’s fashion district, collaging with fabric and painting on the surfaces. Large-scaled with frayed edges, Amiri’s textile works are made from layering fabrics, piecing and sewing them together, so the fragments collectively characterize her home from a distance. Centered on the lives of women, she builds interiors that capture her protagonists within domestic and entrepreneurial spaces and amplify a collective struggle for women’s rights in Afghanistan and around the world. *About the Exhibition:* _Hangama Amiri: A Homage to Home_ is organized by Amy Smith-Stewart, chief curator, The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, where it debuted in February 2023./media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="1" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="122"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:GLZtdMYOlgY/id> yt:videoId>GLZtdMYOlgY/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UCVWUMgy0WDFdvvSdt4v4b3w/yt:channelId> title>Weird year but we had fun #shorts #artmuseum #contemporaryart/title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLZtdMYOlgY"/> author> name>Kemper Museum/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVWUMgy0WDFdvvSdt4v4b3w/uri> /author> published>2023-12-19T17:34:26+00:00/published> updated>2024-05-22T04:34:46+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>Weird year but we had fun #shorts #artmuseum #contemporaryart/media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/GLZtdMYOlgY?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i4.ytimg.com/vi/GLZtdMYOlgY/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>We're looking back on the year and can't help but feel so grateful for the community partners, volunteers, art lovers, and artists who made it possible./media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="1" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="45"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:FmzVlNIg-po/id> yt:videoId>FmzVlNIg-po/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UCVWUMgy0WDFdvvSdt4v4b3w/yt:channelId> title>2023 Kemper Museum Highlights/title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmzVlNIg-po"/> author> name>Kemper Museum/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVWUMgy0WDFdvvSdt4v4b3w/uri> /author> published>2023-12-15T20:44:33+00:00/published> updated>2024-05-28T16:18:33+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>2023 Kemper Museum Highlights/media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/FmzVlNIg-po?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i3.ytimg.com/vi/FmzVlNIg-po/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>/media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="3" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="244"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:Jx44f-60qlc/id> yt:videoId>Jx44f-60qlc/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UCVWUMgy0WDFdvvSdt4v4b3w/yt:channelId> title>Artist Talk: Lilly McElroy/title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jx44f-60qlc"/> author> name>Kemper Museum/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVWUMgy0WDFdvvSdt4v4b3w/uri> /author> published>2023-10-31T19:14:24+00:00/published> updated>2024-05-29T15:12:20+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>Artist Talk: Lilly McElroy/media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/Jx44f-60qlc?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i3.ytimg.com/vi/Jx44f-60qlc/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>*Kemper Museum programs are FREE thanks to support from members and other donors. Working as a lens-based artist, McElroy utilizes the landscape symbolically to address issues of power, gender, and eco-anxiety. She performs for the camera, enacting feminist gestures that reflect a sense of quixotic hopefulness as well as a desire for control over subjects as ungovernable as nature. She photographs herself attempting to grasp the sun and physically manipulates images of the landscape by scratching them until a void is generated. McElroy received her M.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her B.F.A. from the University of Arizona. She has been an artist-in-residence at The Charlotte Street Foundation, The Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, MOCA Tucson, The Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture, and Studios INC. Her work has been exhibited internationally, in venues including Figge Art Museum, Modern Art Oxford, The Nelson Atkins Museum, and Southern Exposure Gallery. Her work has also been featured in publications including Aperture, Art Forum, Art Papers,The New York Times, and O: The Oprah Magazine. McElroy lives and works in Lawrence, KS where she is an Assistant Teaching Professor at The University of Kansas. Her work is represented by Rick Wester Fine Art in New York./media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="1" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="91"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:yWJqlVoeCfg/id> yt:videoId>yWJqlVoeCfg/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UCVWUMgy0WDFdvvSdt4v4b3w/yt:channelId> title>Julie Blackmon & Kevin Morby in Conversation/title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWJqlVoeCfg"/> author> name>Kemper Museum/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVWUMgy0WDFdvvSdt4v4b3w/uri> /author> published>2023-09-29T19:26:36+00:00/published> updated>2024-05-22T03:55:54+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>Julie Blackmon & Kevin Morby in Conversation/media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/yWJqlVoeCfg?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i2.ytimg.com/vi/yWJqlVoeCfg/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>*Kemper Museum programs are FREE thanks to support from members and other donors. Join today!* *About the Exhibition:* In So the roots be known, Zapata centers local lesbian and feminist histories from her research at the Gay and Lesbian Archive of Mid-America at the University of Missouri–Kansas City. In part, this installation pays homage to Womontown, a group of primarily queer women who established a revolutionary community in the Longfellow (Dutch Hill) neighborhood of Kansas City in the late 1980s. Zapata’s use of abstracted tulip forms and shades of lavender draw inspiration from the Womontown banner while simultaneously evoking histories of queer resistance, as the color lavender came to be associated with gay and lesbian communities, and thus stigmatized, in the mid-twentieth century. Ladders—a recurring motif in Zapata’s work alluding to ideas of fantasy and transitional spaces—here make reference to the national lesbian magazine _The Ladder_ (1956–1970), founded by the Daughters of Bilitis and later operated remotely by recognized writer and publisher Barbara Grier in Kansas City. 00:00 Intro 05:19 Gargoyles 07:59 Fear and Revelations 08:32 Stripes and their discontents 14:51 Welcome to Womontown 20:11 Making "so the roots be known" 24:41 Audience Q&A/media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="10" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="368"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:Dn--xBQ-y2A/id> yt:videoId>Dn--xBQ-y2A/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UCVWUMgy0WDFdvvSdt4v4b3w/yt:channelId> title>Artist Talk | Spandita Malik/title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dn--xBQ-y2A"/> author> name>Kemper Museum/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVWUMgy0WDFdvvSdt4v4b3w/uri> /author> published>2023-08-31T18:30:43+00:00/published> updated>2024-05-22T07:56:55+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>Artist Talk | Spandita Malik/media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/Dn--xBQ-y2A?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i1.ytimg.com/vi/Dn--xBQ-y2A/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>*Kemper Museum programs are FREE thanks to support from members and other donors. For _NÄÌrÄ«,_ she traveled to small communities in India known for their distinct embroidery styles and places where women learn handicraft to gain financial independence. Malik met with women who are part of self-help groups for survivors of domestic and gender-based violence and requested permission to document them within their homes or personal spaces. Each woman was invited to embroider her own portrait and claim agency over her portrayal. In the years following, the women connected with each other and Malik over phone calls and group chats, where they were able to deepen their relationships and form a greater support system. The word _jÄḷī_ is recognized across many languages with roots in Sanskrit, referring to the openwork that appears in architecture, metalwork, and embroidery. Here jÄḷī refers to an openwork stitch that produces a fine mesh structure or the appearance of a net. Join today!* *About the Exhibition:* _Principle of Equivalence_ is the first major retrospective exhibition presenting a selection of seventy-three paintings and handmade paper works over nearly seventy years by New York-based artist Virginia Jaramillo (Mexican American, born 1939). Tracing the impact of the Jaramillo’s practice, which collide postwar abstraction with physics, science and the cosmos, archaeology and mythology, and modernist design philosophies, this exhibition sheds light on her career and situates it within the larger narrative of American abstract art. For decades, Jaramillo’s work has been celebrated internationally in groundbreaking exhibitions including _The De Luxe Show_ , in 1971, one of the first major racially integrated exhibitions in the United States. Join today!* In this conversation with Kemper Museum's Erin Dziedzic, Reginald Sylvester II discusses the inspiration, process, and spiritual journey behind his exhibition _Green Gate._ *About the Exhibition:* _Green Gate_ brings together paintings, drawing, and sculpture by New York-based artist Reginald Sylvester II (born North Carolina, 1987, lives and works in Brooklyn, NY). Taking inspiration from abstract expressionism, contemporary design, and theological traditions, Sylvester's working process follows a trajectory from muse to mark making. Taking meditative walks around New York City with an open mindset led Sylvester to a green gate from which ideas about passage, Black bodies, radiated green light, and spiritual resonance are explored in his recent abstract work. _Offering IX_ (2022), a recent acquisition to Kemper Museum’s Permanent Collection will be included in this exhibition. This exhibition is organized by Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and curated by Erin Dziedzic, director of curatorial affairs./media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="324" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="21185"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:SGldzMfPVUk/id> yt:videoId>SGldzMfPVUk/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UCVWUMgy0WDFdvvSdt4v4b3w/yt:channelId> title>Art is not that serious! | Art Close-up #shorts/title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGldzMfPVUk"/> author> name>Kemper Museum/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVWUMgy0WDFdvvSdt4v4b3w/uri> /author> published>2023-02-28T17:16:01+00:00/published> updated>2024-05-24T07:38:31+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>Art is not that serious! | Art Close-up #shorts/media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/SGldzMfPVUk?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i4.ytimg.com/vi/SGldzMfPVUk/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>Artist Christian Ruiz Berman has never taken painting that seriously.
