The first new single malt release from Islay in nearly two decades. A passion project from Hunter Laing independent bottlers and blenders. A distillery boasts the longest line arms in Scotch whisky, wormtub condensers, and when it comes to this release, a gateway for more people to get into Islay whisky Matured in a combination of bourbon and sherry casks, 5 year old spirit, 35ppm, bottled at 50% ABV witn no chill filtering or added colour, this is one of the most balanced styles of classic Islay whisky that you'll come across. I've no idea how many were released. If that's what you care about, then you're probably not going to open it. A truly delicious, fresh, smoky, sweet addition to the legendary west coast stalwarts on Islay. #whisky #whiskey #ardnahoe #hunterlaing #islay #peated #peat #smoky #scotch #singlemalt #naturalcolour ##nonchillfiltered #newwhisky #newrelease #manchester #whiskywednesdays #thisiswhiskywednesday #hashtag #ardnahoewhisky./media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="106" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="985"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:XBmuO-goBls/id> yt:videoId>XBmuO-goBls/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UCRAp_iNhZ90aThUe_BoyVJA/yt:channelId> title>Bladnoch Vinaya, 46.7% - Whisky Wednesday/title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBmuO-goBls"/> author> name>Whisky Wednesday/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRAp_iNhZ90aThUe_BoyVJA/uri> /author> published>2024-05-08T08:14:55+00:00/published> updated>2024-05-10T04:23:42+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>Bladnoch Vinaya, 46.7% - Whisky Wednesday/media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/XBmuO-goBls?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i1.ytimg.com/vi/XBmuO-goBls/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>Despite being one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland, Bladnoch has had a rather torrid past that most of us may be unaware of. Owned for much of its present life by Diageo, then partly owned by Diageo and some brothers who tried to make it independent, it is now in the hands of an Australian gentleman who has brought it back into the modern life of whisky. All of the liquid is stored in these rather impressive and heavy decanters, no matter how much you spend, said liquid itself is something to be marvelled over, too. This particular example, The Vinaya, a Sanskrit word for ‘guide’, has brought Bladnoch into my life for the first time! I’ve been in this industry for a while and tried some single casks of the past, but nothing of their modern lineup in a whole bottle. Matured in a combination of first fill bourbon and sherry casks, The Vinaya is a very chocolate forward style of lowland whisky that is quite different from what I had in my head when I purchased it. It isn’t the most complex whisky I’ve ever tried, but when it comes to first impressions, I don't think that complexity is something I look for. I feel as though this has given me an insight into Bladnoch’s house style, and if the rest are like this, then I can’t wait to delve deeper into the range! There are over 90 whisky distilleries in France, but I’ve only had two of them make it onto this channel. This particular example is from the French side of the alps, a farmyard grown and distilled single malt. Think of it as French Daftmill! Aged in a combination of ex-cognac, ex-Armagnac, and ex-French wine casks - Hautes Glaces Indigene is a rather special whisky, in my eyes. The bottle showcases the Obiou mountain in coloured glass with a stopper made from food-grade, agglomerated cork, and 'spent grains' from the production process. Over the last year or so, I’ve been exploring flavours of other distillates that I’ve ignored. The main focuses are rum of all varieties, tequila, mescal, aguardiente, etc. The one thing that all of these spirits have had in common is this huge contrast of flavour, some of them even more so than whisky, but this particular French single malt has summarised so many of these flavours into one bottle. That is something quite special. We have the fresh fruit notes of peach, making me think of light, grassy single malts. The herbal input of pine and resin from certain mescals, the freshness of agave in tequila reposado - all of this together with a rather incredible scent of jasmine and lilly of the valley, contained in a rather pretty bottle. It is only a 50cl bottle for £60, but there are more expensive offerings in 70cl that are nowhere near as complex as this one. For some reason, I have neglected this rather wonderful side of whisky, but Redwood Empire has been at the forefront of my new adventure, and I couldn’t have wished for a better kickstart to the style. Situated in Sonoma County, California, the distillery's moderate climate and rather lush surroundings allow for a gentle maturation in virgin oak. The Emerald Giant Rye, with its 95% rye mash bill, has catapulted me back into a world of whisky that can be very complex and often misunderstood. Most folks assume that rye is just one dimensional and a little spicy. You couldn’t be more wrong about the style as a whole. This long travelled bottle of whisky is lathered with gentle minty notes, tropical citrus, classic cocktail orange oil garnish, and an ever so faint smell of chocolate and soft baking spices. A rather well-rounded and affordable expression of rye whisky that shall be sitting on my shelves for as long as it is available in the UK. Congratulations to Redwood Empire for a rather stunning example of their craft, I look forward to trying more of their stuff in the future. For some, the distillery stays a strong part of their whisky life. For others, we tend to use it as a foundation block to move into other areas of whisky. Glenlivet had me in their accounts as soon as I tried the 16YO Nadurra bottling. My god. That liquid is one of the most important whiskies in my life, the first cask strength whisky that I ever purchased, and then they discontinued it. Now this isn’t a bitter rant at that, so many distilleries discontinued bottles at a similar time and that is a true shame, but the NAS versions were released and I wasn't displeased by them, but they certainly weren’t the same experience. This Cadenhead example is a fine way to retry this style of whisky that I miss so dearly, but there’s a couple of things we can be appreciative of now in the modern world. One, independent bottlers are so prevalent that you can find a style like this without any issues at all. Two, you don’t have to pay auction prices to experience this style of whisky anymore. Third, Glenlivet are respected and very important, but I don’t feel that they’re ‘loved’ anymore. I feel people buy it out of necessity because it’s a top three distillery in Scotland, and they know the name, not because they love the liquid. Let’s stop playing it safe. You’ve got enough money. #whisky #whiskey #thisiswhiskywednesday #whiskywednesday #scotch #cadenheads #caskstrength #naturalcolour #nonchillfiltered #speyside #glenlivet #glenlivetwhisky #manchester #hashtag #singlemalt/media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="50" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="442"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:EAtGLvhHSsw/id> yt:videoId>EAtGLvhHSsw/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UCRAp_iNhZ90aThUe_BoyVJA/yt:channelId> title>Glen Mhor 8YO 100 Proof, 57% - Whisky Wednesday/title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAtGLvhHSsw"/> author> name>Whisky Wednesday/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRAp_iNhZ90aThUe_BoyVJA/uri> /author> published>2024-03-27T10:39:02+00:00/published> updated>2024-05-08T11:03:59+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>Glen Mhor 8YO 100 Proof, 57% - Whisky Wednesday/media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/EAtGLvhHSsw?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i2.ytimg.com/vi/EAtGLvhHSsw/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>Glen Mhor 8YO 100 Proof, 57% https://www.facebook.com/GlenMhor One of three original Invernessian distilleries, Glen Mhor, was a distillery with quite a cult following despite not many people knowing who, where, or what was produced there. Operating for less than a century, along with a surprising number of other distilleries, Glen Mhor was founded in 1982 and closed in 1983. The distillery pulled its water source from the ever famous Loch Ness and was a key component in Mackinlay’s blended whiskies, most notably the reissue bottlings of whisky that were found in the hut of Shackleton expedition. Glen Mhor was a key component in the rebirth of those blended malts for the public. There isn’t much else to report about the distillery, minus the fact it worked with, and eventually took over its neighbour, the Glen Albyn distillery. Its capacity, still shape, and overall numbers are sadly lost to the history books. #whisky #whiskey #whiskywednesday #thisiswhiskywednesday #scotch #glenmhor #highland #lostdistillery #silentdistillery #manchester #scotchwhisky #singlemalt #gordonandmacphail #indiebottler #hashtag/media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="38" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="306"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:OcXCx3YBxT0/id> yt:videoId>OcXCx3YBxT0/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UCRAp_iNhZ90aThUe_BoyVJA/yt:channelId> title>Meikle Toir 5YO, The Chinquapin One, 48% - Whisky Wednesday/title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcXCx3YBxT0"/> author> name>Whisky Wednesday/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRAp_iNhZ90aThUe_BoyVJA/uri> /author> published>2024-03-20T10:37:05+00:00/published> updated>2024-05-07T23:38:08+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>Meikle Toir 5YO, The Chinquapin One, 48% - Whisky Wednesday/media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/OcXCx3YBxT0?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i4.ytimg.com/vi/OcXCx3YBxT0/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>Meikle Toir Part 2: The Chinquapin One. It’s no secret that virgin oak is my first love of whisky. Billy Walker is somewhat instrumental in that love, too. Many years ago at The Whisky Shop, an exclusive BenRiach was bottled for the company, a 17YO cask strength with a virgin oak finish. Wedding bells may as well have rung out across the whisky community because I bought and drank about 5 bottles of this stuff in half as many years. Stunning. But here we have new distillate, peated to 35ppm, and matured solely in Chinquapin virgin oak casks. This type of white oak was first used by Jura, if memory serves me correctly, and it was a little lost in the mix. It’s all well and nice to shout about utilising new wood, but when it’s lost in the vatting process to fundamental dullness, it’s not easy to sing it to the roof in celebration. Luckily, we don’t have to worry about that here. This is an absolutely stunning example of how virgin oak can mature Scotch whisky to a degree of true succession in regards to the true balance of a product. We are overwhelmed by white chocolate, caramel, cocoa, plum notes, orange oil, cedar wood smoke, powdered sugar, croissants, and all of the boozy delight that there is to be had when exemplary skills are put to use to make two very powerful forces in whisky work together. Billy Walker, fucking hell. Billy Walker is God when it comes to sherry casks. There’s the best absolute sentence you’ll ever read in whisky. But this thing is a stunner of range and flavour. Peating a distillate to 35PPM, bottling it at 48% ABV, full maturation in what have to be the wettest sherry casks of all time, and with all the other good stuff - i’m just so blown away. But is it a surprise? I never got to try his Glenallachie Future bottling because every annoying flipper in the whisky game sold it, and I refuse to pay secondary prices for anything to drink. But the way this whisky is structured just took me away to a different world. If you want something with deep sherry notes, and with any level of smoke to it at all, ignore anything from the following distilleries: Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Springbank (Yes, I said it) and Bunahabhain Moine, just ignore them and buy this. It is 5YO whisky for under £50 a bottle that just blows them out of the water and puts them into the stratosphere to never be heard from again. Never before with any whisky distillery have I had to search every website in the UK for an interesting bottle of it. Finally, I found a bottle of not so ‘Secret Orkney’ that so happened to be from the distillery, but even then, it took some righteous digging through reviews to confirm it was this modern unicorn distillery. Scapa seems to have been turned into something super premium without any rhyme or reason. I thought the 16YO was an okay product, but it was discontinued, and prices jumped to £300 a bottle at its peak. Are you actually taking the piss? It isn’t a large distillery by any means, nor the most famous on the Island of Orkney, so why the jump in pricing? Why the almost impossible to find age stated release, and I’m not a stickler for age statements, but the struggle to even find and indie of it was pretty soul destroying as a whisky fan. I can hear you all saying that there are plenty of older bottlings to try. Yes, that’s true. But as much as I’d love to sample an 30+YO Scapa, I don’t quite fancy paying the £1,000+ price tag for it. I thought this would be a really cutting, intense, slightly funny rant about a distillery that just needs some love, but inevitably, it just made me sad. I’m not crying, but what are Pernod doing in this place, and why can’t they run a Scottish distillery effectively that isn’t a household name? Anyway, watch the video for the review, let me know your thoughts on this expensive cloak and dagger story of why Scapa is now the whisky equivalent of trying to find Lord Lucan riding Shergar over a finish line in Atlantis. #whisky #whiskey #scapa #scotch #orkney #secretorkney #signatory #naturalcolour #nonchillfiltered #whiskywednesday #thisiswhiskywednesday #singlemalt #manchester #hardtofind #unpeated #orkneywhisky/media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="88" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="1119"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:aNYsWJoj6dE/id> yt:videoId>aNYsWJoj6dE/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UCRAp_iNhZ90aThUe_BoyVJA/yt:channelId> title>SMWS 19.90 Chilled Toddy (Glen Garioch), 54%/title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNYsWJoj6dE"/> author> name>Whisky Wednesday/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRAp_iNhZ90aThUe_BoyVJA/uri> /author> published>2024-02-28T11:06:16+00:00/published> updated>2024-05-09T03:57:12+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>SMWS 19.90 Chilled Toddy (Glen Garioch), 54%/media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/aNYsWJoj6dE?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i2.ytimg.com/vi/aNYsWJoj6dE/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>The SMWS are such a solid stepping stone for everyone who is into whisky. Would you like it single barrel, cask strength, and as naturally presetned as possible? Then they're the people to go and see! I was in Edinburgh last year when I decided to become a member, and I'm happy to say that it'll be renewed as soon as it can. The trickiest bit, as is with any single barrel selections, is deciding what you want. It took me a good month or two before I could click checkout on things that really appealed to the nerd in me. This is the final of two bottles that we're going to talk about. Glen Garioch - I love this place. Since a late rediscovery of their standard whiskies in 2023, the appreciation train for this very old school Highland distillery is still speeding along the tracks at good pace. A deep, nutty, dry, chocolate style of single malt whisky that has all of this dripping, lingering spice notes that just make it feel almost infinite. This SMWS bottling is sourced from first fill bourbon, cask strength, and all the good stuff! At a price of £130 per bottle, this really hits everything that the SMWS is about for me. Great casks, great liquid, reasonably priced in the modern world of whisky, and something to cherish in every glass. #whisky #whiskey #thisiswhiskywednesday #whiskywednesday #glengarioch #SMWS #Edinburgh #queenstreet #member #caskstrength #naturalcolour #nonchillfiltered #singlemalt #highland #glengariochwhisky #Scotch #manchester #hashtag/media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="55" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="450"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:mzULv22OeZU/id> yt:videoId>mzULv22OeZU/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UCRAp_iNhZ90aThUe_BoyVJA/yt:channelId> title>SMWS 46.142 Mosambi Mojito (Glenlossie), 59.2% - Whisky Wednesday/title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzULv22OeZU"/> author> name>Whisky Wednesday/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRAp_iNhZ90aThUe_BoyVJA/uri> /author> published>2024-02-21T09:28:12+00:00/published> updated>2024-05-08T08:43:36+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>SMWS 46.142 Mosambi Mojito (Glenlossie), 59.2% - Whisky Wednesday/media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/mzULv22OeZU?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i2.ytimg.com/vi/mzULv22OeZU/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>The SMWS are such a solid stepping stone for everyone who is into whisky. This is the first of two bottles that we're going to talk about. Glenlossie is a relative unknown in a vast world of Speyside whiskies and tends to be hidden deep away into the Diageo vaults. Prioritised as part of the Johnnie Walker blending selection, and rarely seen as a single malt outside of a Flora and Fauna 10YO, with the odd occasion of being involved with the Special Releases. This SMWS bottling is sourced from first fill bourbon, cask strength, and all the good stuff! At a price of £62 per bottle, this really hits everything that the SMWS is about for me. Obscure. A bottling of original Clynelish 14YO Flora and Fauna release, the pre-Clynelish 14 that we all know of today, bottled at 43% rather than the 46% we're now accustomed to. A distillery with a lot of new competition in its vacinity, and a distillery that, in many peoples eyes, needs...reinvention...but in a way that benefits the drinker. Outside of that view, this is the Talisker Parley release. A whisky that has a 3% donation from every bottle goes to helping replant 100,000,000 square meters of ocean forest. Finished in XO Cognac casks for an unknown amount of time and bottled at 48.6% - it is disappointing. On paper, this should be brilliant, but it falls short in some places and then loses its identity in others. Very powerful cask influence with little Talisker character pushing through. A rather large price point of £85, with less than 5% of that going to charity... which is the point of the bottle. The distillery always replied with 'our liquid just doesn't work at older ages.' For years, we've all enjoyed Maker's for what it is, as well as the innovation that they've championed over the last decade. But here we have it, the oldest Maker's Mark ever released to the public! A combination of 87% 12YO stock and 13% 11YO stock, this is a cask strength, powerful, elegantly put together set of casks that just won't quit. I love this liquid, a proud owner of it. But one thing Maker's really advertised with this was 'no bitterness', personally I do taste bitterness, but it's welcomed and rather complementary to the super buttery, and sometimes very floral aroma that this Kentucky legend has. It's a pleasure to have this in my collection, letting people try it, seeing how it develops over time, and the occasional cocktail with it. ··· ··· ··· ··· Ardnahoe. #whisky #whiskey #ardnahoe #hunterlaing #islay #peated #peat #smoky #scotch #singlemalt #naturalcolour ##nonchillfiltered #newwhisky #newrelease #manchester #whiskywednesdays #thisiswhiskywednesday #hashtag #ardnahoewhisky.

2:: Bladnoch Vinaya, 46.7% - Whisky Wednesday

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 08.05.2024 · 08:14:55 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Despite being one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland, Bladnoch has had a rather torrid past that most of us may be unaware of. 3:: Hautes Glaces Indigene Single Malt, 44% - Whisky Wednesday

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 01.05.2024 · 09:15:44 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· French whisky is something that I need to explore more. Cheers. #whisky #whiskey #hautesglaces #french #frenchwhisky #singlemalt #terroir #barley #singlemalt #notscotch #newwhisky #summerwhisky #indegene #thealps

4:: Redwood Empire Emerald Giant Rye, 45% - Whisky Wednesday

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 24.04.2024 · 08:18:10 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· It's taken me a while to jump back into the world of rye, but I’ve taken the challenge on with gusto! 5:: Cadenhead's Glenlivet 16YO, 54.3% - Whisky Wednesday

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 03.04.2024 · 08:46:07 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Cadenhead Glenlivet 16YO Cask Strength, 54.3% Glenlivet is a very important distillery, not only celebrating their 200th Anniversary this year, but is one of the first single malt whiskies that we all come across at the start of our whisky journey. #whisky #whiskey #thisiswhiskywednesday #whiskywednesday #scotch #cadenheads #caskstrength #naturalcolour #nonchillfiltered #speyside #glenlivet #glenlivetwhisky #manchester #hashtag #singlemalt

··· ··· ··· ··· Glen Mhor 8YO 100 Proof, 57% https://www.facebook.com/GlenMhor One of three original Invernessian distilleries, Glen Mhor, was a distillery with quite a cult following despite not many people knowing who, where, or what was produced there. #whisky #whiskey #whiskywednesday #thisiswhiskywednesday #scotch #glenmhor #highland #lostdistillery #silentdistillery #manchester #scotchwhisky #singlemalt #gordonandmacphail #indiebottler #hashtag

7:: Meikle Toir 5YO, The Chinquapin One, 48% - Whisky Wednesday

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 20.03.2024 · 10:37:05 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Meikle Toir Part 2: The Chinquapin One. 8:: Meikle Toir 5YO, The Sherry One, 48% - Whisky Wednesday

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 13.03.2024 · 10:26:37 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Our Billy, who art in Glasgow, hallowed be thy casks… Honestly, this whisky is so impressive, but if I have to spell Meikle Toir anymore, then I’m going to use the bottle as a blunt instrument to inflict some sort of retail driven revenge. You all might be thinking this is an odd thing to state, but I’m going with it.

9:: What is going on with Scapa? Signatory Secret Orkney, 46% - Whisky Wednesday

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 06.03.2024 · 09:03:15 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· What is going on with Scapa? #whisky #whiskey #scapa #scotch #orkney #secretorkney #signatory #naturalcolour #nonchillfiltered #whiskywednesday #thisiswhiskywednesday #singlemalt #manchester #hardtofind #unpeated #orkneywhisky

10:: SMWS 19.90 Chilled Toddy (Glen Garioch), 54%

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 28.02.2024 · 11:06:16 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· The SMWS are such a solid stepping stone for everyone who is into whisky. #whisky #whiskey #thisiswhiskywednesday #whiskywednesday #glengarioch #SMWS #Edinburgh #queenstreet #member #caskstrength #naturalcolour #nonchillfiltered #singlemalt #highland #glengariochwhisky #Scotch #manchester #hashtag

··· ··· ··· ··· The SMWS are such a solid stepping stone for everyone who is into whisky. Obscure. Naturally Presented. Affordable. Easy To Get Into. Next weeks bottle is double the price, but it is still equally worth it in my mind. ··· ··· ··· ··· Closed distilleries still carry a mystique for a lot of us whisky drinkers, but some are better than others. Some are more interesting historically. Some are lauded in the correct manner, but where's does North Port sit in all of this? A Highland distillery that once shadowed Glencadam and the owner of numerous different names over the century and a half that it existed, it is one of the lesser known 'lost' distilleries that now sits in Diageo's record books of stock that they just don't know what to do with. ··· ··· ··· ··· Here's a fun one this week! Thanks again to Mark Little LTD for sending me these really cool miniatures, some of which I've always wanted to buy or try. A 1970s bottle of Johnnie Walker Red Label bottle at 70 proof. This thing was a little more 2D than I wanted it to be, but it's still a pretty cool bit of whisky history. A bottling of original Clynelish 14YO Flora and Fauna release, the pre-Clynelish 14 that we all know of today, bottled at 43% rather than the 46% we're now accustomed to. This was a little different from what I was used to. #whisky #whiskey #thisiswhiskywednesday #whiskywednesday #jw #johnniewalker #redlabel #1970s #clynelish #clynelish14 #marklittlerltd #highland #floraandfauna #vintage #vintagewhisky #hashtag #peated #peatedwhisky #scotch #scottishwhisky #singlemalt #blendedwhisky

··· ··· ··· ··· Talisker. I'm not a fan. #whisky #whiskey #thisiswhiskywednesday #whiskywednesday #talisker #taliskerparley #cognaccask #xo #taliskerdistillery #manchester #taliskerwhisky #isleofskye #parleycharity #hashtag #peated #peatedwhisky #scotch #scottishwhisky

··· ··· ··· ··· Maker's Mark have been asked for years from baying customers - 'Where's the older stocks?' The distillery always replied with 'our liquid just doesn't work at older ages.' For years, we've all enjoyed Maker's for what it is, as well as the innovation that they've championed over the last decade. Congratulations, Maker's Mark - this thing is a stunner. #whisky #whiskey #thisiswhiskywednesday #whiskywednesday #makersmark #cellaraged #makersmarkcellaraged ##caskstrength #naturalcolour #nonchillfiltered #bourbon #Kentucky #makersmarkdistillery #manchester #bourbonwhisky #2023release

··· ··· ··· ··· Rum! We're trying to spread our reviews out a little more in 2024. Rum seems like one of the best places to start! This 4YO expression from Rhythm and Booze hails from Trinidad, bottled at 50% ABV. Felipe got in touch with me to showcase tjis rum, and I was happy to get involved, music, and rum. What more do you want? The QR code on the rear label takes you directly to latin pop quartet Feli y Los Malos and their rather infectious latin grooves. ··· ··· ··· ··· A Macallan of years gone by, from which year I'm unsure, but nonetheless, bottled at cask strength by Cadenhead's as an 18YO from a single sherry cask - I mean, what's not to like? Well, this had some off notes for me, especially towards the end of the tasting, but the smell and start to the taste are simply wonderous! It's somewhat classic in regards to sherry barrels and Macallan, but it's a breath of fresh air to taste a Macallan of years gone by. ··· ··· ··· ··· Ardnamurchan Rum Cask Finish, 55% It's no lie that I've been a huge admirer of Ardnamurchan. Since those first few releases of sweet, salty, softly peated single malts, they've been at the top of my list for exciting new releases and I'm yet to be let down. The sherry cask was delicious, and this rum cask is equally as good. Some have said that it hasn't quite hit the same spot as the sherry, of course it hasn't, it's a totally different style. These Jamaican rum casks that have imparted a banana, hazlenut, toffee syrup feel to this saline style of whisky are wonderful, and as good, if yet different to the sherry cask release. #whisky #whiskywednesday #Ardnamurchan #adelphi #adelphiwhisky #singlemalt #scotch #peated #unpeated #highland #westernhighland #newwhisky #thisiswhiskywednesday #scotland #Manchester

No, seriously though, this was bought with the intention to open, and I rarely win ballots, so when Berry Bros and Rudd told me I'd won last year, I was thrilled. Fifteen years in refil bourbon casks, cask strength, natural colour, non-chill filtered, and one of the oldest releases from the farmyard Fife distillery, this is as juicy, fruity and oily as you could want. Of the four/five Daftmill liquids I've tried, they're are such a refreshing, literally and historically, thing to happen to lowland whisky for a long-old-time. This bottle has a sad story behind it...well, somewhat of a sad story as to why it was opened early, but nonetheless, it's open now. ··· ··· ··· ··· I've been waiting for some Scottish/Japanese collab on a blend, and finally, we have it! Ardray is a whisky comprised of all of the Beam-Suntory Scottish liquids, put together by the minds and palates of the folks from Suntory. A collaborative effort to show how balanced and flavourful blended whisky can be. Most people love Hibiki, but where's the love for the regular blends in regular bottles? A combination of: Auchentoshan, Ardmore, Bowmore, Glen Garioch, Highland Park, Laphroaig, Macallan, and North British - this things really sings when it comes to balanced citrus, and really subtle smoke notes from some weighty ingredients. All natural colours with non-chill filtration. Give all blends a chance. If I hear one more person complain about blends... just do some reading beforehand. ··· ··· ··· ··· Bruichladdich. That distillery name conjures up many an opinion on their many distillates. But now we get to focus on one that doesn't get so much attention, Rhinns. Rhinns is the level below Port Charlotte, but just above the standard distillate regarding PPM. This, along with Lochindaal (baby Octomore), are rarely sold in the public facing sectore, they're typically reserved for private cask purchases, which makes them all that more elusive to the 'must try all' whisky drinkers that we are. Matured in a Yulumba Viognier cask, this has all of those fun notes from Laddie, but with a little more flourish around the edges. #whisky #wednesday #arran #whiskywednesday #thisiswhiskywednesday #fishermansretreat #singlecask #caskstrength #naturalcolour #nonchillfiltered #manchester #singlebarrel #redwine #yalumba #hashtag

··· ··· ··· ··· Harris Another whisky with a much anticipated release is now here, The Hearach from The Isle of Harris. A Hearach is a native of Harris, an island that hasn't seen a legally distilled whisky since the mid-1800s, and here we are complaining about having to wait a couple of years. Made famous by their gin, for good reason too, the new single malt release sits in as stunning a bottle with a very detailed and methodical approach to its transparency and its story of Harris and its Hearachs. Matured in bourbon, sherry, and fino sherry casks, peated between 12-14ppm, with no added colour and non-chill filtered, it's everything we could ever want, right Well, during that wait, there have been some rather good releases of whisky, but, and it's important, this whisky is about more than taste, initially anyway, it's about progress. #whiskywednesday #thisiswhiskywednesday #Hearach #isleofharris #whisky #whiskey #singlemalt #scotch #scottishwhisky #thehearach #batchrelease #Manchester #hashtag

··· ··· ··· ··· A long time coming, the first single malt release from The RoseIsle Distillery! Boasting a 12.5,000,000 litre capacity and being used as a blending distillery for Diageo, RoseIsle has been sat in the background while crazy things have happened in the whisky industry. Now, it arrives with a rather wonderful twelve-year-old single malt with a rather surprising flavour profile. You'll have to go and check out the video for more detail on the smells and flavours, but it's really worth sitting back and enjoying this liquid as it could be a long time before we see another release. A sherry finished whisky (the colour is remarkable!). We have a peat level of 50ppm, 55% ABV, and what makes this all even more impressive is that it can only be 4YO, at most. ··· ··· ··· ··· Welcome to another auctions haul here at Whisky Wednesday! There were meant to be three bottles... but I was an idiot and dropped one. If you want to see what that should've looked like, then please head over to our Instagram - @thisiswhiskywednesday. Bottles one is a 1961 distilled, bottled 1967 bottling of Canadian Club. Picked up for an absolute bargain of £25 due to the possible issues faced with a damaged seal and a torn label. Nonetheless, it tastes very good, almost like the modern bottling, but it looks incredible. Bottle two is a classic and somewhat historical bottling of Clynelish 12YO, at 40% ABV, bottled fot Ainslie and Heilbron, bottled by Gordon & Macphail, a beautifully fruity, slightly sour example of vintage Clynelish from about four decades ago. ··· ··· ··· ··· Linkwood as a product is always at the forefront of independently bottled Scottish whisky for all the right reasons, too! But, when you want to wrap your palate around the house style and keep it affordable, there is only one option, and it's this. Linkwood 12YO is, or was, part of the Flora and Fauna series of whiskies from Diageo's lesser known distilleries, typically distilleries that were prioritised for blending across the board. Thing bottle is surprising to me as I didn't expect it to be as peach driven as it is. Far more exotic than I remember it being. Although that last sip was many moons ago. Cheers!

However, due to the new and rather volatile way the secondary market is going, there are bargains to be had! Here, we have two miniatures that I picked up for £20 each. Given that they're 50cl each, and from closed distilleries, I honestly think that's quite good value overall. But, are they worth it at that point, even? This is a long video. I apologise, but it gets a little ranty in parts, but I do still feel that it's full of details that are to be talked about.

With new master distillers coming in and demand of the product seeing unprecedented new heights, I'm rather thankful to a customer for borrowing me this bottle to review. A combination of rather well aged single grain and single pot still whiskies, even at just 40% ABV, Midleton Very Rare is a rather special and very tasty option when it comes to premium blended whiskies. With a nose that is dense with the most tangy, exotic fruits that I've come across for a while. All backed up by a drier, richer palate of coffee, soft oak, Xmas spices, and white chocolate. ··· ··· ··· ··· Hello, everyone, and welcome to Edinburgh! I have had the honour of being hosted by The Scotch Malt Whisky Society for few hours back in May to celebrate their 40th anniversary. Heading over to their Queen Street branch, I was honoured to have met their ridiculously talented and knowledgeable staff who were more than handy in helping me pick some choice whiskies to review for Whisky Wednesday. Our next whisky is 53.429 (Kelp Is On The Way) bottled at 58.9% ABV, 10YO, 289 bottles. It's a rather stunning example of refill bourbon cask Caol Ila that isn’t sweet at all. Bottled specifically for The Queen Street branch SMWS; it was an absolute pleasure to be able to showcase this whisky on the channel. Caol Ila is a massive distillery, the biggest distillery on Islay and its house profile is peated and smoky, but, for me, has always had a creamier, sweeter character to it, certainly compared to some of it’s fellow distilleries on Islay. This whisky is full of cracked black pepper, fresh salt, fish oil, wet beach, and that petroleum fishing boat feel that everyone first gets a whiff of when they smell any peated Islay for the first time. The refill cask has allowed the spirit to shine through much more, offering up these more vegetal, powerful, west coast powerhouse notes. In many ways, it’s a perfect Islay whisky to celebrate such a big occasion with. The taste is all peanuts, vinegar and chilli oil, and soy sauce. Amazingly inviting with Asian food flavour profiles with a gentle fizz of heat ruminating throughout the finish of the whisky.

38:: SMWS 40TH Anniversary - DARK 'N' STORMY CRÈME BRÛLÈE, 50% ABV - Whisky Wednesday

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 05.07.2023 · 09:06:14 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Hello, everyone, and welcome to Edinburgh! I have had the honour of being hosted by The Scotch Malt Whisky Society for few hours back in May to celebrate their 40th anniversary. Heading over to their Queen Street branch, I was honoured to have met their ridiculously talented and knowledgeable staff who were more than handy in helping me pick some choice whiskies to review for Whisky Wednesday. First, we have a spirit made by The Glasgow Distillery, typically a malt distillery, but they’ve produced a one-off, made to order outrun for The SMWS to assist with the celebration The G16 Rare Release (Dark & Stormy Crème Brûlée) is a limited batch of 1,300 bottles, at 6YO, bottled at 50% ABV, all in all, a rather tame ABV for The SMWS, but nonetheless, a fun privilege to try this bottle. Layered in sweet, rich, and some welcome earthier notes of liquorice, ginger, and molasses notes that help fill out the heavy caramel, vanilla, and Tonka driven flavour profile that it offers to you. It's a very easy drink that isn’t unusual for a grain whisky, but as it’s a custom order for a big celebration, it’s quite a pleasure to be able to try this. A must try if you can still. Get your hands on it. If not, then do head over to. Their website to check out a host of other options. For your grain whisky needs.

39:: Glendronach Cask Strength Batch 12, 58.2% ABV - Whisky Wednesday

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 28.06.2023 · 08:52:35 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Glendronach Cask Strength Batch 12. I've tried many of these bottles over the years but have rarely committed to the purchase. There's no reason in particular, I was probably too occupied with a Bourbon, probably. A combination of Oloroso and Pedro Ximinez sherry casks and bottled at 58.2% ABV, this is a classic example of Glendronach. It is laced with amaretto, tiramisu, coffee, treacle, and big waves of caramelised vanilla. It is a thick, rich, and rather wonderful example of what Glendronach can be. With added water, it becomes especially...different.

40:: Indri Indian Single Malt, 46% - Whisky Wednesday

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 21.06.2023 · 09:21:55 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· It's been such a long time since I've reviewed Indian whisky. I've genuinely no idea why. Matured near the foothills of the Himalayas in a village called Indri, this whisky is distilled and matured in the classic way, although the maturation takes a slight twist with ex-bourbon, ex-PX sherry, and then some French red wine casks. Rather lovely indeed. First out of the gate, the nose and finish on this are truly wonderful. The smell is a wash with fresh blackberry and mint, following that on are loads of toffee and pineapple. The finish is all about Bottled In Bond Bourbon. If you love the warmth of 50% ABV whisky, this is an absolute must! The whisky did fall down for me on the taste front. It has lots of soft oak and barrel spice, but that's all I could really pull from it. That was a true shame. Overall, though, if you've never tried Indian whisky or love bourbon and want to try Indian whisky, this is a truly affordable and easily accessible way to do it. Cheers!

41:: Laphroaig Cairdeas 2023, 52.3% - Whisky Wednesday

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 07.06.2023 · 08:46:56 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· I'm back with more Laphroaig! Are Laphroaig the distillery of 2023? Looks that way in my eyes. I haven't purchased a Cairdeas release for a very long time, 2016, I think, was the last time with a madeira finish. Anyway, I saw the email for this and bit the bullet - worth every single penny. 75% of the maturing stock has been in second fill madeira casks, with the other 25% being finished in mostly white port casks. A little summer time smoke infused dream of white peaches, white grapes, ashy classic Laphroaig peat, vanilla, toffee, honey, mint, and agave syrup It's impossible to hide my love for Laphroaig. It does everything you get from unpeated whiskies, but with peat. Winner all around. I'm incredibly happy to have this open on the shelf. Well done, Laphroaig. #whisky #whiskey #Laphroaig #cairdeas #Laphroaigcairdeas #madeira #whiteport #islay #islaywhisky #peated #heavilypeated #kildalton #feisile #2023 #limitedrelease #friendsoflaphroaig

42:: Turntable Whiskies Track 03: Purple Haze, 46% - Whisky Wednesday

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 31.05.2023 · 08:57:31 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Purple Haze! All up in my...glass? Doesn't quite have the same ring to it, but luckily, the whisky is as impactful to taste as that song is when you first hear it. We have: 44% Balmenach in a Pedro Ximinez Puncheon 42% Craigellachie in an Oloroso sherry butt 14% Invergordon in an ex-Sherry cask All of these profiles really work soundly together. They amplify each other and are very complimentary. But, it's still Craigellachie that leads the way with its slightly salt, soft savoury notes, all backed up with that densely soaked sherry profile. A true charmer and a very, very memorable blended whisky. Massive congratulations to Turntable Whiskies for this release. ··· ··· ··· ··· Welcome, one and all, to Turntable Track 02: Firestarter! Roaring in west coast peat and keeping the heat going with loads of virgin oak influence, here we have a rather interesting blend that has brought together two very powerful types of flavour in the whisky industry. We have liquid makeup of: 40% Caol Ila matured in virgin oak. 23% Cameronbridge in Virgin Oak. 22% Benrinnes in virgin oak. 15% Invergordon in Virgin Oak. Much to mull over here, but as you'll see in the video, I've got an issue with this selection of things. ··· ··· ··· ··· Welcome to a rather interesting way to approach blended whisky, and when I say 'interesting' I'm talking about large transparencies, fun malts and grain, mad cask selections, cool visuals, and a price point which is pretty accessible when it comes to modern blended styles. This is Turntable Blending House, and it is quite an exciting way to show off the component parts of blends and how they go into influencing whatever they're trying to make. This is Track 01: Joy. Discovery. Invention. Bottled at 46%, natural colour and un-chill filtered, it is made up of Linkwood, Knockdhu, Girvan and Strathclyde whiskies, all from a host of much more interesting, or possibly just talked about barrel selections. #whisky #whiskey #thisiswhiskywednesday #whiskywednesday #turntablewhiskies #blendedwhisky #whisky #whiskey #linkwood #knockdhu #girvan #strathclyde #bourbon #virginoak #redwine #cognac #singlemalts #singlegrains #blended #scotland #hashtag #manchester

··· ··· ··· ··· Canasta! Welcome, everyone. I'm here to talk to you about the first Feis Ile bottle that I've been able to taste, Bunnahabhain Canasta cask at 51.2% ABV. What is Canasta? A blending of the Palomino grape and the Pedro Ximinez grape varities, the former producing a classically off-dry sherry, the latter producing a ridiculously sweet, rich sherry that is the equivalent of alcoholic diabetes. Bunnahabhain has matured their spirit in this sherry type and have produced this cocoa powder and orange oil soaked spirit, with all of those classic, salty, sweet Bunnahabhain smells and tastes. #whisky #whiskey #Bunnahabhain #feisile #canasta #sherry #oloroso #pedroximimez #palomino #grapes #islay #islaywhisky #Bunnahabhainwhisky #singlemalt #scotch #scottishwhisky #whiskywednesday #thisiswhiskywednesday #feisile2023 #limitedediton #specialrelease #hashtag

··· ··· ··· ··· Welcome to a 27YO single cask Macallan. Don't often ge to say that in general, let alone with a little sample sent in the post. This bottle is being sold via Mark Littler LTD and has been bottled by a client of his. Producing only 90 bottles that will be available via the link below, you can also view the huge history and links that this bottle has to huge chunks of Macallan's history, outside of being distilled there. I've had the privilege of trying this whisky prior to this video. ··· ··· ··· ··· Laphroaig. 10. Cask. Strength. These words are enough to strike fear or love into the hearts of whisky drinkers. As such a divisive style of whisky, even peaty whisky fans can become divided over Laphroaig. However, when it's presented in this manner, it is unmistakably, unequivocally, one of the best standard line bottles of whisky on the market. I'm biased. I love Laphroaig. It's probably my favourite Islay distillery. Yet to ever experience a version of this cask strength release that wasn't draped in complexity and classic Laphroaig peatiness. Some will undoubtedly disagree with how much I love this, but there aren't many other cask strength Islay whiskies that are as affordable (contextually) as this...perhaps Ardbeg Uigeadail But even then, that can be so varied when it comes to the batches. Either way, I hope you enjoy the review! #whisky #whiskey #islay #thisiswhiskywednesday #Laphroaig #caskstrength #Laphroaigcaskstrength #batch15 #naturalcolour #nonchillfiltered #islaywhisky #scotch #singlemalt #Manchester #hashtag

··· ··· ··· ··· Established in 2011, The Lakes Distillery has really pushed itseld to the forefront of English whisky. Releasing a collection of well loved blends and limited release single malts, this is The Whiskymaker's release #6. A vatting of ex-Oloroso, Pedro Ximinez and red wine casks from some European country (a little more clarity would've been great there.) Beyond that, it is honestly one of the best single malts I've tried this year, even if it does have some stiff competition from very well established Scottish brands. #whisky #whiskey #thisiswhiskywednesday #whiskywednesday #thelakes #lakesdistillery #singlemalt #englishwhisky #sherry #oloroso #pedroximinez #redwine #highstrength #naturalcolour #nonchillfiltered #englishsinglemalt #manchester #whiskymakers #hashtag

49:: Rabbit Hole Kentucky Straight Bourbon, 47.5% - Whisky Wednesday

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 12.04.2023 · 07:24:00 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Welcome back to the world of bourbon! It feels like so long since something new appeared in the UK, luckily that wait is over...for me, anyway. Rabbit Hole is the concept of Kaveh Zamanian, a former clinical psychologist, now whisky maker! Here we have the Heigold, a Kentucky straight bourbon with 70% corn, 25% malted German rye, and 5% malted barley. The name Heigold and the inclusion of German rye specifically is a reference to a German rock cutter who moved to Kentucky in the 1800s. Lacking in the tropical fruit area, but very strong in the heavy spice and butterscotch flavour profile, Rabbit Hole Heigold is a relatively affordable and powerful style of bourbon that stands up on its own and probably in your favourite cocktail. #whiskywednesday #thisiswhiskywednesday #rabbithole #bourbon #rabbitholebourbon #whisky #whiskey #straightbourbon #kentuckybourbon #kentucky #heigold #corn #rye #barley #louisville #notscotch #hashtag #manchester #newdrinks #

··· ··· ··· ··· Glencadam is a tiny, quaint, and overlooked distillery that just doesn't get the attention it deserves. It's not an easy thing to state in whisky these days. Producing around 1,300,000 litres of whisky per year and maturing them in a wide selection of cask types, it is a gentle and almost 'lowland' like style of single malt whisky. In the ownership of Angus Dundee Distillers, I'd like to use this video to bring some very needed and apt attention to this whisky distillery. The 10YO that I'm reviewing is a bourbon cask matured whisky that is scented with pineapple, whipped cream, and some delicious melon notes throughout it. #whisky #whiskey #whiskywednesday #thisiswhiskywednesday #glencadam #highland #glencadamwhisky #naturalcolour #nonchillfiltered #highlandwhisky #angusdundee #bourboncask #scotland #singlemalt #scotch #manchester #hashtag
