1:: The History And Potential Of MDMA | 1A

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 29.06.2023 · 22:04:48 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Stuck indoors during the peak of COVID lockdown, science journalist Rachel Nuwer found herself at a professional crossroads. She had already published a nonfiction book on the dark world of wildlife trafficking and was looking for her next subject. A moment of clarity came at a surprising time. She and her partner, at home with nothing much to do, ingested MDMA. MDMA, also known as ecstasy or molly, is illegal. It is listed as a Schedule 1 drug by the U.S. federal government (the same group as marijuana and psilocybin, or magic mushrooms). In recent years, a growing body of academic research has suggested potential benefits of MDMA beyond the recreational ecstasy some partygoers are familiar with. One study found that MDMA-enhanced therapy dramatically reduced PTSD symptoms. Another showed that psychedelics like MDMA could reopen so-called critical periods of time when brains are especially impressionable and open to learning. A scientific case study profiled a former white supremacist who reformed his extremist views after taking MDMA. Nuwer experienced similar clarity while on the drug. Her new book, "I Feel Love: MDMA and the Quest for Connection in a Fractured World," is the result of her epiphany. She explores the history and potential of the so-called love drug. 2:: The Opioid Crisis Is Causing Grandparents To Become Caregivers Again | 1A

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 28.06.2023 · 22:51:45 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· The U.S. is battling a years-long, devastating opioid epidemic. Last year saw 79,770 reported opioid-involved drug overdose deaths, a 1.5 percent decrease from the previous year, according to data from the CDC. Nevertheless, the opioid crisis has upended traditional family structures. Many parents have died from overdosing, become incarcerated, or are otherwise unable to care for their children due to substance abuse. As a result, more and more children are being raised primarily by their grandparents in what are known as grandfamilies. Grandfamilies face unique challenges, as caregivers contend with stigma, dwindling income, deficits in technological savvy, and health issues related to aging. What kind of support do grandfamilies need to raise successful children? We explore how the opioid crisis is affecting grandparent caregivers with a panel of experts. For grandfamilies seeking resources, click here. Joining us for the conversation is Megan Dolbin-MacNab. She's a professor of human development and family science at Virginia Tech. Also with us, Bobbie London. She's a Marriage and Family Therapist and Director of Family Support at South Shore Stars and Melissa Lilly, director of Healthy Grandfamilies, a training program designed to support grandparents when they become caregivers the second time around. 3:: The Problem With Solitary Confinement In The U.S. | 1A

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 27.06.2023 · 20:22:59 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· More than 122,000 people in the U.S. are estimated to be in solitary confinement, according to a report by Solitary Watch and Unlock the Box. That number is far greater than previous estimates. The United Nations says that prolonged solitary confinement can be psychological torture. One man — Dennis Hope — was held in solitary confinement for 27 years after two prison escapes. A new film, "The Box: 27 Years in Solitary," details Hope's experience in solitary confinement until 2022 when he petitioned the Supreme Court to hear his case. A week later he was moved out of solitary. The Federal Bureau of Prisons says solitary confinement, also known as Special Housing Units, is for the "safety, security, and orderly operation of correctional facilities." We talk with Tammie Gregg, Deputy Director of the ACLU National Prison Project; Jean Casella, Director at Solitary Watch; and Jeremy Young, Senior Producer for Fault Lines. 4:: 370 Years Later, Connecticut Is Exonerating Accused Witches | 1A

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 26.06.2023 · 20:29:55 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· In May, legislators in Connecticut passed a resolution to exonerate people accused of being witches in the seventeenth century. The resolution passed nearly 376 years to the day that Alice "Alsa" Young was put to death in the state. She was the first to be executed for alleged witchcraft in colonial America, decades before the more well-known Salem witch trials began in Massachusetts in 1692. Dozens of people were killed, mostly women, over accused witchcraft in the U.S. in the 1600s and early 1700s. It's estimated that nearly 50,000 people were killed in Europe based purely on superstition. Today, accusations of witchcraft still lead to violence in some parts of the world, including Ghana and Nigeria. Leo Igwe, a Nigerian human rights activist thinks a lot about this subject. "When these people are killed, nobody is brought to justice," Igwe told 1A. "It is important to really publicize this resolution and what it stands for – that America says, this belongs to our past." We talk with Saud Anwar, Connecticut state senator; Sarah Jack, Co-founder of the Connecticut Witch Trial Exoneration Project and Co-Host of "Thou Shalt Not Suffer: The Witch Trial Podcast"; and Ann Little, professor of history at Colorado State University, about witch trials and their lasting impact. ··· ··· ··· ··· Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito penned an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal trying to get ahead of a report released by ProPublica detailing unreported trips he took with a billionaire who had business before the court. The one-year anniversary of the overturning of Roe v. Wade is this week. Abortion continues to be a political sticking point for both parties. The FTC is suing Amazon over its "deceptive" Prime sign-up and cancelation processes. The commission's complaint states that the retail giant has "knowingly duped millions of consumers into unknowingly enrolling." Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed Congress this week. Progressives are wondering why President Joe Biden would extend such a warm welcome to a world leader whose actions have sometimes been interpreted as anti-democratic. The search for a submarine carrying tourists to the wreck of the Titanic gripped the attention of people around the world. Hope of finding the five people aboard has now passed. At least seven Palestinians were killed in an Israeli military raid in the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank. Hundreds more were injured as soldiers fired live ammunition. ··· ··· ··· ··· For most of us, a house is a place to live. A staircase is something to help us move between floors, and a door is simply a space we pass through. But for carpenter Mark Ellison, a house, a staircase, a doorway are opportunities for beauty. Ellison has been called many things, including the best carpenter in New York City and the man who builds impossible things. His specialty is lavish and challenging projects for the wealthy. His clients have included the late David Bowie and the late Robin Williams. But in his new book, "Building: A Carpenter's Notes on Life and the Art of Good Work," Ellison is less interested in these extravagant projects and more interested in what they've taught him: how to build a life worth living. 8:: How Genealogy Is Used To Track Black Family Histories | 1A

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 20.06.2023 · 22:06:49 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Our names are important to us. They tell us who we are and often, who we come from. So imagine suddenly discovering the last name you've always carried... might not actually be the name you should have. Alex Neason began looking into her family's history after discovering her great grandfather's name was different from what she believed for her whole life. In her search to discover the story of that last name, she enlisted genealogist Nicka Sewell-Smith. For Black Americans, genealogy can fill in the blanks left by the legacy of slavery and racism in the U.S. Services like the Freedmen's Bureau and Slave Voyages provide free access to records and documents to help with that search. What role does genealogy play in fostering knowledge and connection for Black Americans? WHAT IS “1A?” Listening to the news can feel like a journey. ··· ··· ··· ··· It depends on when, and where you grew up, but you can probably name a few of your favorite sit-com dads - from Mike Brady and his "bunch", to Homer Simpson, to Andre Johnson from Blackish. There is no single, universal way to be a father. There are as many ways to be a dad as there are dads. This year, for Father's Day, we asked a variety of different dads to tell us their stories about what fatherhood means to them.
