I hope to redo the first one in the new style sometime down the line. Some things I couldn't find a place to for in the video: Kirkby had a cousin named Louise Kirkby Lunn who was a famous opera singer. I've heard it said that her notoriety is why our Stanley called himself Kirkby. I think it's more to do with his mother but it could be a combination. at some point he changed his legal name to Stanley Kirkby. Kirkby sang coon, ragtime, jazz and quartet music as well. Many of his most beloved recordings are in those categories. During editing I found out that the Sister's name is named Mary. I have no clue who Fernandez was and have found absolutely no information regarding him. 4:: History Through The Horn - Ep 2: Stanley Kirkby

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 06.04.2024 · 11:02:28 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· The last episode was really more of a pilot and I've refined things since then. 01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 06.04.2024 · 01:51:31 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Issued in 1903 on French Gramophone Company record: 2-32136.

6:: Brise Des Nuits - Emile Mercadier

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 05.04.2024 · 07:05:43 ··· ···

7:: when The Harvest Days Are Over - Ernest Pike (as Herbert Payne)

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 05.04.2024 · 01:11:57 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Issued in 1908 on British Zonophone Record: X-42756. Nice British cover of an American song which at the time of this recording would have been 8 years old. Will F. Denny Version: https://youtu.be/doiXblQW5G0?si=DeLyEUXTei0mDkUc

8:: Wedding Bells Are Ringing For Sally - Stanley Kirkby

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 31.03.2024 · 14:00:59 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Issued in 1931 on Edison Bell Radio Record: 1465. A very nice "waltz ballad" (as the record puts it) sung by Kirkby with great emotion and skill, even in his relatively advanced age. If you're fond of Kirkby it might please you to know that the History Through The Horn about him is written, recorded and being edited. I should have it up very soon which is quite exciting!

9:: Under The Anheuser Bush - Billy Murray

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 22.03.2024 · 14:21:03 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· issued in late 1904 on Victor Monarch Record: 2639. This is a sort of parody of Down At The Old Bull and Bush written in 1904 to advertise beer for a company who's name I forget. I've never cared much for alcohol or songs about alcohol but this is pretty nice.

10:: The Honeysuckle and The Bee - Harry MacDonough

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 09.03.2024 · 16:36:10 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Issued in around 1901 on Victor Record: 3552. One of the very few recordings of this song during the era in which it was released.

11:: Lover's Once But Strangers Now - Joseph Natus

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 07.03.2024 · 04:21:36 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Issued in 1901 on Edison Record: 7709. Very late brown wax standard cylinder, the next year in 1902 Edison would switch to the gold molded process.

12:: The Mansion Of Aching Hearts - J.W. Myers

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 07.03.2024 · 03:29:13 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Issued in around 1902 on Columbia Phonograph Company Disc: 861. Haven't seen many copies of this about, might be pretty scarce. I haven't heard many recordings of the song at all despite its apparent popularity.

13:: Amour à Séville - Maréchal

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 05.03.2024 · 16:16:50 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Issued in around 1900 on French Berliner: 32914. Ghost vocal.at the beginning of the record, likely the engineer telling everybody to start.

14:: J'ai Perdu Ma Gigolette - Fernandez

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 29.02.2024 · 05:56:22 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Issued in around 1899 on Pathé cylinder: 1806. I have no clue who Fernandez was and have found absolutely no information regarding him.

15:: Mother's Twilight Song - Edward M. Favor

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 20.02.2024 · 15:49:47 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Issued in around 1894 on Edison Record: 983. Very nice little waltz here. interesting that it's announced as "beautiful song".

16:: A Bird In A Gilded Cage - Steve Porter

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 20.02.2024 · 05:27:25 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Issued in around 1900 on Columbia Cylinder: 4608. This was also issued on a concert or "grand" cylinder under the same number. Very interesting to note that Florrie Forde sang this song with such popularity that she was put on the British issue of the sheet music. Also very interesting to see such an American song get directly popular in England at this time. A year or two later a famous song called Down Where The Whurzburger Flows was released (also composed by Von Tilzer) and it became so popular in England that it was still in the public conscious by the 1950s, the only caveat being that it was released with a different tittle and set of lyrics. It was called Riding On Top Of The Car and sang with great success by George Lashwood.

17:: Just One Girl - Will F. Denny

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 15.02.2024 · 04:01:30 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Issued in 1899 on Edison Record: 5717. J.W. Myers version: https://youtu.be/_dVE1N3xuMc?si=58T_H4X8x5_YOaiw Very nice little waltz song and quite the popular one too, it was recorded many times by many artists for pretty much all companies at the time.

18:: Like a Star That Falls From Heaven - Joseph Natus

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 13.02.2024 · 18:17:34 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Issued in 1903 on Victor Monarch Record: 2326. I was thinking that this song is very similar to Bird In A Guided Cage and Mansion Of Aching Hearts but it turns out they were all written by the same lyricist! He definitely had a prefered theme.

19:: I Love Someone In Somerset - Malcolm McEachern

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 12.02.2024 · 05:02:44 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Issued in 1925 on Vocalion Record: X-9543. Ernest Butcher Version: https://youtu.be/Ni9ESMWG8mU?si=E3_BWnA3HGwGTfy7 I don't know if I've stated on the channel yet that my favorite subgenre of music is the Tin Pan Alley popular waltz song. This song isn't quite that but it scratches a very similar itch. Waltz songs in general are always pleasing to my ears. I've heard it said that basso profundo singers cannot sing love songs. Their voices were meant for drinking songs, songs of the sea and buffo opera roles. But Malcolm McEachern is one of the deepest basses I've heard and he puts this lovely love song across in a clear and concise manner, far more preferable (for me) to the Ernest Butcher version.

20:: My Old Shako - Harry Dearth

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 10.02.2024 · 20:30:57 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Issued in 1922 on HMV Record: D 211. Very nice song here sang wonderfully by the great bass baritone Harry Dearth. For those who don't know a Shako is an old type of military cap. You only really see them nowadays on toy soldiers and in reenactments.

21:: Two Little Blue Little Shoes - Edward M. Favor

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 29.06.2023 · 09:20:48 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Issued in around 1903 on Columbia Disc: 492.

22:: Your Mother Wants You Home Boy - Robert Price

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 29.06.2023 · 04:00:19 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Issued on Canadian Berliner: 1464. Does anybody know when this song was published? I heard 1905 but that seems late for a piano accompaniment and a Bob Price disc as his activity seemed to stop in 1904.

23:: Katie My Southern Rose - J.W. Myers

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 28.06.2023 · 06:53:09 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Issued in around 1903 on Columbia Disc: 1132.

24:: La Polka Des Englishs - Charlus

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 28.06.2023 · 06:21:40 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Issued on French Columbia cylinder: 50273. Such a funny little song here in which the french poke fun at their English friends. It is hilarious to me.that when writing the song Mayol borrowed the melody from a song called Polka Of The Clowns..... The chorus in English is: "Tralalalala lalala la la! Here come the English! Oh, yes! Very well! Tralalalala lalala la la! With snacks like "the sandwich" oh, yes! Very well!" Funny that the phrase and snack they choose are "oh yes very well" and "the sandwich " confidentiality British.

25:: Fumeur d'Opium - Bérard

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 27.06.2023 · 06:44:06 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Issued in around 1906 on French Pathe Disc: 3914.

26:: Turkey In The Straw - Billy Golden

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 26.06.2023 · 10:45:24 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Issued in 1895 on Edison Record: 4011. Mr. Golden sure does sound excited to be there recording for Edison.

27:: The Land Where The Women Wear The Trousers - "Ch." Denton

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 23.06.2023 · 07:19:16 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Issued in 1910 on Indestructible Record: 7027. I'm pretty sure that this is Harry Bluff but am not certain.

28:: Sérénade Du Baigneur - Gabin

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 21.06.2023 · 07:29:31 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Issued in around 1900 on Fontana Cylinder: 658. I know pretty much nothing about the Fontana company except that it was named after an instrument maker. Any information would be appreciated.

29:: La Leçon d'Épinette - Charlus

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 21.06.2023 · 06:06:10 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Issued in 1898 on French Pathe Cylinder: 2768.

30:: They Think I'm Charlie Chaplin - Harry Cove

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 20.06.2023 · 09:53:10 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Issued in 1915 on Winner Disc: 2933. Fun little topical tune. One of the 3 Chaplin themed songs from this time that I'm aware of.

31:: La Frêle Parisienne - Maréchal

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 19.06.2023 · 00:15:06 ··· ···
