The Richard Ellmann Lectures in Modern Literature, now among the most prominent in North America, were established in honor of Richard Ellmann (1918–1987), who served Emory University as the first Robert W. Woodruff Professor from 1980 to 1987. The 2024 Ellmann Lectures honored the 10th anniversary of Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney’s death. Chosen by Ellmann himself, Heaney gave the inaugural lectures at Emory in 1988. Trethewey and O’Toole both have a personal connection to Heaney and, for the lectures, consider the relationship between art, life, and writing in various forms and contexts. This event is also part of the Rosemary Magee Creativity Conversation Series. ellmann.emory.edu arts.emory.edu/creativityconversations/media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="12" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="159"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:eSuDpfuZMV8/id> yt:videoId>eSuDpfuZMV8/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UCPTZWC3WPdtBbKk1_qlXcUw/yt:channelId> title>Major Jackson Danowski Poetry Reading 02-18-2024/title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSuDpfuZMV8"/> author> name>Emory University/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPTZWC3WPdtBbKk1_qlXcUw/uri> /author> published>2024-03-01T15:14:48+00:00/published> updated>2024-03-08T00:01:16+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>Major Jackson Danowski Poetry Reading 02-18-2024/media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/eSuDpfuZMV8?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i2.ytimg.com/vi/eSuDpfuZMV8/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>Major Jackson, an award-winning poet and host of the podcast “The Slowdown,” gave a public reading during his visit to Emory University on Sunday, Feb. 18, 2023, in the Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts on the main campus. The reading, one of the University’s Black History Month celebration events, was part of the annual Raymond Danowski Poetry Library Reading Series founded by Emory’s Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library , which holds a collection of Jackson’s papers. Jackson is the author of six books of poetry, including “Razzle Dazzle: New & Selected Poems” (2023), “The Absurd Man” (2020), “Roll Deep” (2015), “Holding Company” (2010), “Hoops” (2006) and “Leaving Saturn” (2002), which won the Cave Canem Poetry Prize for a first book of poems. His edited volumes include “Best American Poetry 2019,” “Renga for Obama,” and Library of America’s “Countee Cullen: Collected Poems.” He is also the author of “A Beat Beyond: The Selected Prose of Major Jackson” edited by Amor Kohli. The public reading at Emory is sponsored by the Hightower Fund, Emory Libraries and the Rose Library, Emory’s Department of English and the Creative Writing Program, Emory Arts, the Decatur Book Festival, the Michael C. Award-winning authors and 2024 Ellmann Lecturers, Natasha Trethewey and Fintan O’Toole, join Geraldine Higgins, Director of the Ellmann Lectures, for a conversation on their creative process, March 5, 2024 in the Emerson Concert Hall of the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts. This event is also part of the Rosemary Magee Creativity Conversation Series. ellmann.emory.edu arts.emory.edu/creativityconversations

01.01.1970 01:00:00 11.05.2023 16:07:07
More than three years after the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services first declared a public health emergency, the COVID-19 public health emergency officially winds to a close today on May 11th. But there are still questions about what this means for the pandemic moving forward. What will the end of the public health emergency mean for hospitals and public health agencies? How will it impact ongoing research to understand the effects of long COVID? And, critically, will vaccines and testing still be available -- especially for the tens of millions of people in the U.S. without health insurance? Emory epidemiologist Dr. Jodie Guest and Dean Dr. Carlos del Rio team up to discuss these questions and more.

25:: Race, Religion, and Black Lives Matter

01.01.1970 01:00:00 08.05.2023 13:17:40
R. Khari Brown of Wayne State University uses the 2020/2021 National Politics Study to examine two central questions: (1) How do religious beliefs and clergy sermons about race associate with support for Black Lives Matter (BLM) and racial justice work? (2) Is the relationship between religion and BLM related attitudes and activism similar or different across race groups? In the months following the summer of 2020 protests in response to George Floyd’s murder, African, Hispanic, and White American worship-goers that heard sermons about race and policing were more likely than were their co-ethnics to approve of Blacks Lives Matter (BLM) and to engage in racial justice work. Identifying with the religious left and believing that social justice is a core part of one’s religious beliefs also associated with these groups approving of BLM and engaging in racial justice work. That said, race matters. These forms of religion tend to maintain stronger relationships with White BLM related attitudes and activism than they do for African Americans and Hispanics. The James Weldon Johnson Institute for the Study of Race and Difference supports research, teaching, and public dialogue that examine race and intersecting dimensions of human difference including but not limited to class, gender, religion, and sexuality. http://www.jamesweldonjohnson.emory.edu

01.01.1970 01:00:00 27.03.2023 21:36:02
Dr. Robert Gaynes, distinguished physician and professor emeritus at Emory University School of Medicine and professor of epidemiology at the Rollins School of Public Health, discusses the Laennec stethoscope. René-Théophile-Hyacinthe Laennec was a French physician, flautist, and carpenter whose uncommon skills aided him in developing the first stethoscope – a rudimentary wooden tube that permitted “indirect listening.” The inspiration for the device came to him when he saw two children playing a game on a fallen tree, which consisted of one child scratching at one end of the trunk while the other listened at the far end. The device improved audibility and paved the way for such common medical devices as the thermometer, otoscope, and blood pressure cuff – all of which greatly improved examination and diagnosis. The copy of the Laennec stethoscope that Dr. Gaynes discusses is housed in the Woodruff Health Sciences Center Library at Emory University, along with many other historically significant early medical devices. Calliope’s Cabinet—an exploration of curious innovations through the ages – is a collaboration between The Hatchery, Emory Center for Innovation and Emory Libraries.
