He succeeded Robert Oppenheimer, who personally chose Bradbury for the position of director after working closely with him on the Manhattan Project during World War II. Bradbury was in charge of the final assembly of "the Gadget", detonated in July 1945 for the Trinity test. Bradbury took charge at Los Alamos at a difficult time. Staff were leaving in droves, living conditions were poor and there was a possibility that the laboratory would close. He managed to persuade enough staff to stay and got the University of California to renew the contract to manage the laboratory. He pushed continued development of nuclear weapons, transforming them from laboratory devices to production models. Numerous improvements made them safer, more reliable and easier to store and handle, and made more efficient use of scarce fissionable materiel. In the 1950s Bradbury oversaw the development of thermonuclear weapons, although a falling-out with Edward Teller over the priority given to their development led to the creation of a rival nuclear weapons laboratory, the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. In later years, he branched out, constructing the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility to develop the laboratory's role in nuclear science, and during the Space Race of the 1960s, the laboratory developed the Nuclear Engine for Rocket Vehicle Application (NERVA). The Bradbury Science Museum is named in his honor./media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="193" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="2516"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:C8nwgzXlBEE/id> yt:videoId>C8nwgzXlBEE/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UCP4R4OAJXEwnNOE28P8ophw/yt:channelId> title>Strategic Air Command Semiannual Film Report • February to July 1968/title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8nwgzXlBEE"/> author> name>Nuclear Vault/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCP4R4OAJXEwnNOE28P8ophw/uri> /author> published>2024-01-29T18:36:31+00:00/published> updated>2024-04-12T04:45:49+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>Strategic Air Command Semiannual Film Report • February to July 1968/media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/C8nwgzXlBEE?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i4.ytimg.com/vi/C8nwgzXlBEE/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>Subscribe to Nuclear Vault http://bit.ly/SubscribeNuclearVault Department of Defense PIN 20791 The appearance of U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) visual information does not imply or constitute DoD endorsement./media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="466" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="11656"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:Qt6zfHtR-c8/id> yt:videoId>Qt6zfHtR-c8/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UCP4R4OAJXEwnNOE28P8ophw/yt:channelId> title>Operation Teapot Tesla • 7kt Tower @308 ft • 2400 FPS Slow Motion/title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qt6zfHtR-c8"/> author> name>Nuclear Vault/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCP4R4OAJXEwnNOE28P8ophw/uri> /author> published>2023-08-23T17:00:15+00:00/published> updated>2024-04-12T04:46:13+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>Operation Teapot Tesla • 7kt Tower @308 ft • 2400 FPS Slow Motion/media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/Qt6zfHtR-c8?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i2.ytimg.com/vi/Qt6zfHtR-c8/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>Operation Teapot Tesla • 7kt Tower @308 ft • 1 March 1955 • 2400 FPS Slow Motion The U.S. conducted 210 atmospheric nuclear tests between 1945 and 1962, with multiple cameras capturing each event at around 2,400 frames per second. Dominic I tests were conducted in three general locations: Johnston Island, airdrop and high-altitude detonations; Christmas Island, staging area for 24 airdrop tests; and the open ocean, launch of a Polaris missile from a submarine and subsequent detonation of a device in a reentry vehicle, and the detonation of a device carried by an antisubmarine rocket (ASROC). Approximately 28,000 military and civilian personnel participated in the test series. More than 200,000 tons of supplies, construction materials, and diagnostic equipment were shipped or airlifted to the test areas. Most of the devices were detonated in the air after being dropped from a B-52 bomber. Five high-altitude bursts, designated as Operation Fishbowl tests, were lofted by rockets. Their purpose was to study the effects of nuclear detonations as defensive weapons against incoming ballistic missiles. National Archives. ··· ··· ··· ··· From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norris_Bradbury Norris Edwin Bradbury (May 30, 1909 – August 20, 1997), was an American physicist who served as director of the Los Alamos National Laboratory for 25 years from 1945 to 1970. The Bradbury Science Museum is named in his honor.

The Plowshare Program focused on developing nuclear devices exclusively for peaceful purposes. The intent of the Gnome experiment was to evaluate the effects of a nuclear detonation in a salt medium. Historically, Project Gnome consisted of a single detonation of a nuclear device on December 10, 1961 with the Salado Formation. Since the Gnome detonation, the AEC/DOE has conducted surface restoration, site reconnaissance, and decontamination and decommissioning activities at the site. In addition, annual groundwater sampling is performed under a long-term hydrological monitoring program begun in 1972. Coach, an experiment to be located near the Gnome project, was initially scheduled for 1963. Although construction and rehabilitation were completed for Coach, the experiment was canceled and never executed. Known collectively as Project Gnome-Coach, the site is located approximately 25 miles east of Carlsbad, New Mexico, in Eddy County, and is comprised of nearly 680 acres, of which approximately 60 acres are disturbed from the combined AEC/DOE operations. The 3-kiloton GNOME test was detonated 1200 feet underground in a salt bed formation on December 10, 1961, near Carlsbad, New Mexico. There were 48 subsurface experiments involved, making GNOME the most heavily instrumented seismic nuclear test in history. This testing provided valuable data for both the Plowshare and Vela Uniform Programs. GNOME was the first nuclear test in the Plowshare Program. The Plowshare Program objectives were to determine how energy produced from nuclear explosions could be used for peaceful or civilian purposes. The Vela Uniform Program studied seismic detection, identification, and location of nuclear explosions. Studies were conducted underground with ground-based instruments for detecting explosions in outer space and with established satellite-based instruments for detecting explosions in outer space. Although GNOME was a Plowshare test, the Vela Uniform objective was to determine how the signals and effects of a 3-kiloton device detonated underground in salt beds differed from the outputs of detonations of different yields in other geologic formations such as tuff and granite. Scientists also wanted to compare the seismic signals from underground tests with that of earthquakes. This video contains footage different from that shown in video number 0800028, and includes an introduction by Dr. Edward Teller, one of the few times he was captured on film. Several longrange and close-up views of surface effects from the detonation are shown as well as people reentering the detonation cavity approximately 6 months after the test when the underground cavity was opened to both official observers and members of the press. No other Operation Nougat footage is shown in this video. 0800034 - PROJECT GNOME 1961 Color 29:13
