While I have been telling people to read Elbaum critically for many years--I started suggesting it in 2012, ten years after its original release. Yet, I share some of Goldner's concerns. Very few things make Loren Goldner madder than Max Elbaum's vision of the "new communist" movement. While I have been telling people to read Elbaum critically for many years--I started suggesting it in 2012, ten years after its original release. Yet, I share some of Goldner's concerns. It's also interesting how much has changed since Goldner wrote this 22 years ago.

This is a description of a tendency I think we see in government: one that has instances both particular to capitalism and even particular to this current movement in capitalism but has some trans-historical systemic effects. I also explain how to differentiate the capitalist totality from systems in general and complex systems in particular. I also speak to why so much of opposition to the current system has the same flaws as an engineer designing against only one problem but ignoring other purposes and feedback.

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 29.06.2023 · 02:22:08 ··· ··· ··· ··· ··· ··· In a discussion with my MMT friend, I realized that while the neo-classical paradigm almost is certainly wrong, even when I agreed with his Warren Mosler-inspired MMT analysis in part, the explanatory power being given to currency flows didn't seem as obvious to me. I also looked over data about declining profit rates and corporate crises that also didn't fit that model even though his explanations do make sense if I am treating back of the napkin calculations as explanatory. It got me thinking about the nature of economic abstraction and the limitations of all these kinds of models as explainers of causes. I think he is right about something being rotten in the Fed's thinking and the limits of conventional economics, but I may go much further than him ultimately.
