One of the most significant events was at Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands where the Japanese advance on the Pacific was stopped by the Allies and where around 30,000 lives were lost.
On land, the islands are littered with unexploded devices – almost 50,000 have been discovered since 2011. Accidental detonations of the bombs and other munitions have caused deaths and injuries and survivors are left to struggle for themselves with very little support.

Back then, the United States government waged a costly war with most indigenous tribes. In 1882, they calculated that it cost nearly $1 million to kill just one tribal member in battle, but just $1,200 for eight years of schooling. So they funded over 360 boarding schools which systematically destroyed native cultures and communities.

The United States and Europe have sanctioned some of the most violent settlers. Reporting from the West Bank, RSI met Palestinian shepherds, Israeli peace activists and Israeli settlers, all protagonists of this other, painful chapter of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

On land, the islands are littered with unexploded devices – almost 50,000 have been discovered since 2011. Accidental detonations of the bombs and other munitions have caused deaths and injuries and survivors are left to struggle for themselves with very little support.

São Paulo's population of over 10 million inhabitants makes it the world's fourth-largest city. Many of the inhabitants dwell in slums with no sanitation and high crime rates. Mayor Marta Suplicy has a vision to "help the people excluded from everything that we have in the city." But exclusion is at the heart of the way urban life operates. Nowhere is this more obvious than on the streets of São Paulo, where the super-rich cohabit alongside the desperately poor. Poor living conditions do not deter those desperate for the opportunities that only the city can offer.
