Contributions welcome at https://nickcarverphoto.com/contribute VIDEO DESCRIPTION When you get sent to photograph a vacant radiology center in the high desert of California for your biggest client, what do you do? You bring along 2 film cameras so you can make some photos that your client would hate. And you make a YouTube video about it. And by ā€œyouā€ I mean ā€œme.ā€ Or ā€œIā€ actually. Or ā€œmyā€ - you know, whichever word is grammatically correct for each of those sentences. Sure, my artsy 6x6 and 6x17 photos on Kodak Portra may have no appeal to my client, but you know who loves ā€˜em? This guy. ā€¦Iā€™m pointing at myself right now. Thatā€™s because I love some good liminal space photos. You know liminal space? Liminal spaces are empty or abandoned places that appear eerie, forlorn, and often surreal. Liminal spaces are commonly places of transition, pertaining to the concept of liminality (thank you, Wikipedia). Well thatā€™s kind of what this place is. So I took pictures of it. Here are those pictures, along with some video. Enjoy! But hey itā€™s heavy on celebration, fun facts, and my wife. Yep, two new things Iā€™m trying out in this video: scrolling some random facts across the bottom of the frame and actually showing you my wife. Yessir Iā€™m lookinā€™ to evolve this channel of mine. Broaden my horizons and try some new things now and then. This is the start of that. Well, actually the ā€œSpringtime With the Twin-Lensā€ video was the start. I mean come onā€¦a photo walk on MY channel? At least I used some super hip 100-year-old music instead of those old, dusty lofi hip-hop beats. I really have no clue if you folks are going to like this video. Or the videos I have planned for the near future. Trying new things is scary. It used to keep me awake at night as a young lad. Iā€™d scream out for my mom ā€œthe new video I posted is getting panned by my viewers! The comments are dreadful!ā€. Then sheā€™d hustle in, give me a hug and tell me it was just a nightmare. ā€œBut the thumbs-up to thumbs-down ratio in my analytics felt so realā€ Iā€™d reply. Then sheā€™d say, ā€œShh, itā€™s okay. Everyoneā€™s disapproval canā€™t hurt you anymore. Youā€™re awake now.ā€ Man, these descriptions are getting a little out of hand. Even by my standards. Hats off to anyone who actually reads these things. ā€œFUN FACTSā€ REFERENCES: - ā€œHow Dangerous is your Champagne?ā€: https://wineschoolofexcellence.co.uk/2013/09/27/how-dangerous-is-your-champagne/ - YouGov Mustache Survey: https://today.yougov.com/society/articles/7760-men-and-women-differ-mustache - ā€œ10 Concerning Fast Fashion Waste Statisticsā€: https://earth.org/statistics-about-fast-fashion-waste/ Website: https://www.nickcarverphoto.com Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/nickcarver *This video contains no paid endorsements of any kind./media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="2248" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="18864"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:wBJOZlt8c7k/id> yt:videoId>wBJOZlt8c7k/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UCLcKQhTO6i0oq10S234vWyA/yt:channelId> title>May Print Giveaway Winners & What's Coming Next/title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBJOZlt8c7k"/> author> name>Nick Carver/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLcKQhTO6i0oq10S234vWyA/uri> /author> published>2024-05-19T16:00:42+00:00/published> updated>2024-05-21T01:39:02+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>May Print Giveaway Winners & What's Coming Next/media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/wBJOZlt8c7k?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i4.ytimg.com/vi/wBJOZlt8c7k/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>Hidey ho there neighbor it's time to announce the winners of the most recent print giveaway. I donā€™t really know why I stopped doing the follow-up image review videosā€¦ At any rate, theyā€™re back, baby! So in this video Iā€™m going to dive deep into the photos I took on my recent on location video walkinā€™ around Orange County with my Mamiya C220 Twin Lens Reflex camera loaded up with some Kodak Portra film pushed 1 stop. I also took a 6x17 photo on Portra 160 in that on-location video, so weā€™ll talk about that one too. Hey, big shocker, I have a lot of overly analytical thoughts on many of these photos. Theories, inspirations, technical notes, etc. etc. If youā€™re a photography junkie like me, youā€™ll probably like this esoteric stuff. If not, maybe youā€™ll still enjoy the footage of my dog. Because heā€™s an angel. A terrible, poorly behaved angel that I would die for. The bees are buzzinā€™ all up in my orange blossoms and I think one of ā€˜em flew in my bonnet, because I got a hankerinā€™ to get out in this beautiful weather to snap some photos. Thereā€™s a specific 6x17 shot Iā€™ve been wanting to take for quite some time in Garden Grove, but first I think Iā€™ll dust off the Mamiya C220 to shoot some 6x6 square format. So with my TLR by my side, I took a little stroll through Old Town Orange (in Orange County, California of course) to expose a few rolls of Kodak Portra pushed 1 stop to get that tasty contrast. You see, I wanted to create a look a little bit like those old citrus ads. You know the ones I mean? A hand-painted old-timey Sunkist ad telling you to buy more Orange County oranges. One of those. Iā€™m not really the ā€œphotowalkā€ type, but maybe I will be from now on because I got some photos I actually quite like on this outing. And man, oh, man do I love using that Mamiya. Thereā€™s something special about shooting square format and thereā€™s really nothing quite like using a twin-lens camera. Even if I hadnā€™t gotten a single good exposure, I would have been happy just to take the C220 for a walk. Thanks for watching! Basically Iā€™m going to do the opposite of what most photographers doā€¦Iā€™m going to reveal every last little ā€œsecretā€ and ā€œhintā€ and ā€œtipā€ and/or ā€œtrickā€ about my photos for your viewing and learning pleasure. Yessir, lots of TIPS and TRICKS. Because thatā€™s what real photography is, a checklist of tips you collect over the years and then vomit all over your subject in the field. Just distill photography down into an easy soundbite we can remember. Give it a clever name and throw ā€œruleā€ in front of it if you want it to really stick. Rule of thirds? Guaranteed banger. Rembrandt Lighting? Sounds like something a real photographer would use. THIS IS WHAT THE PROS DO Sorry, I got a little sidetracked there. Iā€™ve always been annoyed by the concept of tips and tricks. But hey thatā€™s not what Iā€™m doing here anyway. Here Iā€™m going to dissect one (or a few) of my photos and provide details on all sorts of things from camera technique to exposure settings to compositional notes and lighting. Time to pull back the curtain, folks. The photos featured in this episode were made on Kodak Portra 160 and Portra 400 film in 6x17 format with a Shen-Hao TFC 617-A using a Rodenstock 115mm lens. The subject is a vacant Sears department store located in Riverside, Californiaā€¦and I got a hell of a beautiful sunset on the day I photographed it. I hope you enjoy the video! Not for the entire world, just for my 3-part video series traveling through and taking pictures in Spain for the #FramesFromAndalucia project. This time Iā€™m taking lots of medium format and large format photos of urban decay, the beautiful white-box town of MojĆ”car, and landscapes in the Tabernas Desert. Kodak Portra 160, Portra 400, Tri-X, and Ilford HP5+ all make an appearance in this episode, because Iā€™m a man who canā€™t make up his mind and always overpacks. But thatā€™s alright, at least I got some variety. The Tabernas Desert is fā€™ing gorgeous, by the way. I didnā€™t know what to expect, but it was more rugged than I anticipated. And with that beautiful mid-winter light, mmhhmmā€¦thatā€™s my kind of photography. This was a dream job for me and the kind of thing that only comes along once in a lifetime. Here we pick up with the rest of Day 3 where I visit the absolutely surreal Torcal de Antequera. The rock formations here are incredible, and I hit the fā€™ing JACKPOT with some dense fog that made the photography that much more epic. Lots of 6x17 film, lots of 6x9 with the olā€™ Fuji GW690II, lots of slippinā€™ & slidinā€™ on the muddy trails. Good times, good memories, and even gooder photos. Then for Day 4 we ventured off to AlmerĆa to photograph a quaint little seaside town on 4x5 Ilford HP5+ film before heading to a beautiful beach where I captured an okay 6x17 frame on Kodak Tri-X and another 6x17 shot on Portra that I think is actually pretty damn cool. And thatā€™s it. Thatā€™s everything that happened. Manā€¦my 35+ hours of editing this video suddenly seems ridiculous when I see the whole thing summed up in just 142 words. Well, hopefully the video feels a little meatier than the description does. Enjoy! That's because I along with YouTube greats like @grainydaysss , @graincheck , @therealsirrobin , @MikeChudley & @ThomasHeatonPhoto among others were the lucky chosen few to go on a magical journey to AndalucĆa on behalf of the tourism board there. This is the start of my contribution to the project. By the way...this project was unreal. I mean I thought it was unreal. Literally. When they emailed me the proposal, I just deleted it. No way this kind of dream job could be falling in my lap. Then they emailed me again. They says to me the job is no scam. So I says to them I says "Yeah well I only want to shoot film." They said fine. So I said "...wait, what?" Yeah. Turns out the project was real, but the trip itself...that was truly unreal. In the other sense, though. Like, it happened and everything, but damn dude it was so cool I can hardly believe it. No chance any of you are still reading this...but hey I gotta put something in here. At any rate, here's the first video of several to come for this project. So stay tuned! AND FOR THE HOCKEY FANATICS: I know, the goalie pad rule was implemented before Hellebuyck & Bobrovsky even entered the league. But what can I say? My knowledge of 1995-2005 NHL goaltenders is lacking, so I used some modern players. I'm sure my inbox will be absolutely flooded with people calling me out for that. Olā€™ Nicky C finally got himself a high quality photo printer. A 17ā€ Canon imagePROGRAF Pro-1000 to be exact. And I fear for what Iā€™ve unleashed here, friends, because I found out pretty quick that this is going to be a new addiction for me. You know how much I love seeing my photos in print. Well now itā€™s at my fingertipsā€¦24 hours a dayā€¦anytime I want. Soon my house will be in disrepair, my wife will leave me, and my teeth will be rotted out of my skull because rather than repair the siding, spend time with my lady, and brush my teeth Iā€™ll just be printing pictures. All day. All night. Nonstop. But thatā€™s okay. Iā€™ll have a bunch of prints to keep me warm at night. Iā€™ve always left printing to a lab. I could never justify the expense of maintaining an inkjet printer. Because, you see, these things are meant to be used. The less you use them, the more they cost. But Iā€™m finally printing enough (sometimes) to make it work. But even when I donā€™t have prints to make for customersā€¦F it. Iā€™ll just make test prints. Iā€™ll keep the fluids flowing in this inkjet printer until itā€™s time to make a serious limited edition print for a real live customer. Because Iā€™ve finally decided that itā€™s worth the effort of maintaining my own printer so that I can take 100% control of my workflow. From capture to scan to printā€¦itā€™s all in the palm of my hands. Maximum quality, maximum control, maximum funsies. Itā€™s finally happening. This photography exhibit that I havenā€™t shut up about since June is now becoming a reality. Months of mock-ups, spreadsheets, scanning, printing, and framingā€¦itā€™s all led to this. Iā€™ve brought you along every step of the way and I ainā€™t about to ditch you now. In this video Iā€™ll take you through install day and talk about the hard numbers of the whole thing - how much did this project set me back? What am I selling each piece for? And for anyone too far to visit the gallery in person, I even got a little walkthrough to share with ya. Then Iā€™ll wrap it up with a recap of opening night and my final thoughts on the experience. And speaking of thatā€¦this has been one hell of an experience for me. It was a lot of work, but I truly enjoyed the entire process. From planning out the gallery walls to high-rez scanning the negatives to installing the artwork, even when it was difficult or stressful I could always feel an underlying cushion of ā€œgoddamn this is awesome.ā€ The more years I spend in photography the more Iā€™m realizing how much my passion for printing is the ultimate driving force. I love taking photos, no doubt, but getting a print hung up on the wallā€¦thereā€™s really nothing like it. If youā€™d like to see my first ever solo photography gallery showing featuring all analog film photography images, be sure to stop in to Casa Romantica Cultural Center & Gardens in San Clemente, CA. The exhibit is titled ā€œAmerican Desertā€ and is on display until December 17th. Turns out theyā€™re kind of a big deal in the analog photography world. After all, us film photographers love the tangible. Pixels? We say FEH! Give us INK, give us PAPER, give us something we can HOLD IN OUR HANDS. Enter the humble zine. With a relatively low cost of entry, you can turn your photos into real live prints to share with friends, family, and customers. No need to find spare wall space to hang a big olā€™ print. You can taste that sweet, sweet nectar that only print-making can deliver with just a lilā€™ book. This is my first ever zine but it certainly wonā€™t be my last. And so now that Iā€™m a seasoned zine-making professional with exactly one publication under my belt, I feel fully qualified to teach you how to do it. In this video Iā€™ll cover everything on what it takes to make a zine - planning, design, packing, shipping, costs, and profit. No doubt it takes some serious work to publish your own zine, but by God I just might be so bold as to say itā€™s worth it. You bring along 2 film cameras so you can make some photos that your client would hate. And you make a YouTube video about it. And by “you” I mean “me.” Or “I” actually. Or “my” - you know, whichever word is grammatically correct for each of those sentences. Sure, my artsy 6x6 and 6x17 photos on Kodak Portra may have no appeal to my client, but you know who loves ‘em? This guy. …I’m pointing at myself right now. That’s because I love some good liminal space photos. You know liminal space? Liminal spaces are empty or abandoned places that appear eerie, forlorn, and often surreal. Liminal spaces are commonly places of transition, pertaining to the concept of liminality (thank you, Wikipedia). Well that’s kind of what this place is. So I took pictures of it. Here are those pictures, along with some video. Enjoy! But hey it’s heavy on celebration, fun facts, and my wife. Yep, two new things I’m trying out in this video: scrolling some random facts across the bottom of the frame and actually showing you my wife. Yessir I’m lookin’ to evolve this channel of mine. Broaden my horizons and try some new things now and then. This is the start of that. Well, actually the “Springtime With the Twin-Lens” video was the start. I mean come on…a photo walk on MY channel? At least I used some super hip 100-year-old music instead of those old, dusty lofi hip-hop beats. I really have no clue if you folks are going to like this video. Or the videos I have planned for the near future. Trying new things is scary. It used to keep me awake at night as a young lad. I’d scream out for my mom “the new video I posted is getting panned by my viewers! The comments are dreadful!”. Then she’d hustle in, give me a hug and tell me it was just a nightmare. “But the thumbs-up to thumbs-down ratio in my analytics felt so real” I’d reply. Then she’d say, “Shh, it’s okay. Everyone’s disapproval can’t hurt you anymore. You’re awake now.” Man, these descriptions are getting a little out of hand. Even by my standards. Hats off to anyone who actually reads these things. “FUN FACTS” REFERENCES: - “How Dangerous is your Champagne?”: https://wineschoolofexcellence.co.uk/2013/09/27/how-dangerous-is-your-champagne/ - YouGov Mustache Survey: https://today.yougov.com/society/articles/7760-men-and-women-differ-mustache - “10 Concerning Fast Fashion Waste Statistics”: https://earth.org/statistics-about-fast-fashion-waste/ Website: https://www.nickcarverphoto.com Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/nickcarver *This video contains no paid endorsements of any kind.

I don’t really know why I stopped doing the follow-up image review videos… At any rate, they’re back, baby! So in this video I’m going to dive deep into the photos I took on my recent on location video walkin’ around Orange County with my Mamiya C220 Twin Lens Reflex camera loaded up with some Kodak Portra film pushed 1 stop. I also took a 6x17 photo on Portra 160 in that on-location video, so we’ll talk about that one too. Hey, big shocker, I have a lot of overly analytical thoughts on many of these photos. Theories, inspirations, technical notes, etc. etc. If you’re a photography junkie like me, you’ll probably like this esoteric stuff. If not, maybe you’ll still enjoy the footage of my dog. The bees are buzzin’ all up in my orange blossoms and I think one of ‘em flew in my bonnet, because I got a hankerin’ to get out in this beautiful weather to snap some photos. There’s a specific 6x17 shot I’ve been wanting to take for quite some time in Garden Grove, but first I think I’ll dust off the Mamiya C220 to shoot some 6x6 square format. I’m not really the “photowalk” type, but maybe I will be from now on because I got some photos I actually quite like on this outing. And man, oh, man do I love using that Mamiya. There’s something special about shooting square format and there’s really nothing quite like using a twin-lens camera. Even if I hadn’t gotten a single good exposure, I would have been happy just to take the C220 for a walk. Thanks for watching! Nah? Okay. Well it’s a photo series I’m pursuing off and on that involves, well, what I just said. I’m calling it “Dead Inside” and it’ll probably take me my entire life to finish it. Here’s a sampling of how I take the photos. In this one I’m using 4x5 large format with some Kodak Portra 400 and I got myself a new (to me) Canon AF35M loaded up with Fujifilm 400—which might be my new favorite film. Enjoy. Basically I’m going to do the opposite of what most photographers do…I’m going to reveal every last little “secret” and “hint” and “tip” and/or “trick” about my photos for your viewing and learning pleasure. Yessir, lots of TIPS and TRICKS. Because that’s what real photography is, a checklist of tips you collect over the years and then vomit all over your subject in the field. Just distill photography down into an easy soundbite we can remember. Give it a clever name and throw “rule” in front of it if you want it to really stick. Rule of thirds? Guaranteed banger. Rembrandt Lighting? Sounds like something a real photographer would use. THIS IS WHAT THE PROS DO Sorry, I got a little sidetracked there. I’ve always been annoyed by the concept of tips and tricks. But hey that’s not what I’m doing here anyway. Here I’m going to dissect one (or a few) of my photos and provide details on all sorts of things from camera technique to exposure settings to compositional notes and lighting. Time to pull back the curtain, folks. The photos featured in this episode were made on Kodak Portra 160 and Portra 400 film in 6x17 format with a Shen-Hao TFC 617-A using a Rodenstock 115mm lens. The subject is a vacant Sears department store located in Riverside, California…and I got a hell of a beautiful sunset on the day I photographed it. I hope you enjoy the video! Not for the entire world, just for my 3-part video series traveling through and taking pictures in Spain for the #FramesFromAndalucia project. This time I’m taking lots of medium format and large format photos of urban decay, the beautiful white-box town of Mojácar, and landscapes in the Tabernas Desert. Kodak Portra 160, Portra 400, Tri-X, and Ilford HP5+ all make an appearance in this episode, because I’m a man who can’t make up his mind and always overpacks. But that’s alright, at least I got some variety. The Tabernas Desert is f’ing gorgeous, by the way. I didn’t know what to expect, but it was more rugged than I anticipated. And with that beautiful mid-winter light, mmhhmm…that’s my kind of photography. This was a dream job for me and the kind of thing that only comes along once in a lifetime. But I’m certain it won’t be the only time I set foot in Spain. This country is gorgeous. The people are warm and welcoming. And the food…getouttahere. Here we pick up with the rest of Day 3 where I visit the absolutely surreal Torcal de Antequera. The rock formations here are incredible, and I hit the f’ing JACKPOT with some dense fog that made the photography that much more epic. Lots of 6x17 film, lots of 6x9 with the ol’ Fuji GW690II, lots of slippin’ & slidin’ on the muddy trails. Good times, good memories, and even gooder photos. Then for Day 4 we ventured off to Almería to photograph a quaint little seaside town on 4x5 Ilford HP5+ film before heading to a beautiful beach where I captured an okay 6x17 frame on Kodak Tri-X and another 6x17 shot on Portra that I think is actually pretty damn cool. And that’s it. That’s everything that happened. Man…my 35+ hours of editing this video suddenly seems ridiculous when I see the whole thing summed up in just 142 words. That's because I along with YouTube greats like @grainydaysss , @graincheck , @therealsirrobin , @MikeChudley & @ThomasHeatonPhoto among others were the lucky chosen few to go on a magical journey to Andalucía on behalf of the tourism board there. Ol’ Nicky C finally got himself a high quality photo printer. A 17” Canon imagePROGRAF Pro-1000 to be exact. And I fear for what I’ve unleashed here, friends, because I found out pretty quick that this is going to be a new addiction for me. You know how much I love seeing my photos in print. Well now it’s at my fingertips…24 hours a day…anytime I want. Soon my house will be in disrepair, my wife will leave me, and my teeth will be rotted out of my skull because rather than repair the siding, spend time with my lady, and brush my teeth I’ll just be printing pictures. All day. All night. Nonstop. But that’s okay. I’ll have a bunch of prints to keep me warm at night. I’ve always left printing to a lab. I could never justify the expense of maintaining an inkjet printer. Because, you see, these things are meant to be used. The less you use them, the more they cost. But I’m finally printing enough (sometimes) to make it work. But even when I don’t have prints to make for customers…F it. I’ll just make test prints. I’ll keep the fluids flowing in this inkjet printer until it’s time to make a serious limited edition print for a real live customer. Because I’ve finally decided that it’s worth the effort of maintaining my own printer so that I can take 100% control of my workflow. From capture to scan to print…it’s all in the palm of my hands. Maximum quality, maximum control, maximum funsies. Website: https://www.nickcarverphoto.com Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/nickcarver *This video contains no paid endorsements of any kind.

It’s finally happening. This photography exhibit that I haven’t shut up about since June is now becoming a reality. Months of mock-ups, spreadsheets, scanning, printing, and framing…it’s all led to this. I’ve brought you along every step of the way and I ain’t about to ditch you now. In this video I’ll take you through install day and talk about the hard numbers of the whole thing - how much did this project set me back? What am I selling each piece for? And for anyone too far to visit the gallery in person, I even got a little walkthrough to share with ya. Then I’ll wrap it up with a recap of opening night and my final thoughts on the experience. And speaking of that…this has been one hell of an experience for me. It was a lot of work, but I truly enjoyed the entire process. From planning out the gallery walls to high-rez scanning the negatives to installing the artwork, even when it was difficult or stressful I could always feel an underlying cushion of “goddamn this is awesome.” The more years I spend in photography the more I’m realizing how much my passion for printing is the ultimate driving force. I love taking photos, no doubt, but getting a print hung up on the wall…there’s really nothing like it. If you’d like to see my first ever solo photography gallery showing featuring all analog film photography images, be sure to stop in to Casa Romantica Cultural Center & Gardens in San Clemente, CA. Turns out they’re kind of a big deal in the analog photography world. No need to find spare wall space to hang a big ol’ print. And so now that I’m a seasoned zine-making professional with exactly one publication under my belt, I feel fully qualified to teach you how to do it. In this video I’ll cover everything on what it takes to make a zine - planning, design, packing, shipping, costs, and profit. No doubt it takes some serious work to publish your own zine, but by God I just might be so bold as to say it’s worth it. Hooray for time slipping away from me like grains of sand in an hour glass! And speaking of time...woah-ho-ho take a look at that time stamp! 45 minutes, Nick? Really? Ain't nobody got time for that. I do plan on doing these more frequently. I kind of assumed nobody really liked these videos that much so I haven’t put much thought into doing more of them. But, you know what? You lovely viewers have made it crystal clear to me that not only do you like this series, but you’re willing to watch one that’s 45 minutes long! At least that’s what you told me on a recent Instagram poll. Well, behold! Here’s a video where I talk about 2 cameras - the Fuji GA645Zi and the Fuji GW690 II. I’m saying “goodbye” to one and “hello” to the other. The GA645Zi is truly one of my favorite cameras. It’s compact with an ultra-sharp zoom lens and all the features I love. I mean just look at it. Such a foxy-looking camera. I’ve had it for 7 years, but it’s only taken me 1 year to finally admit that it’s the wrong camera for me. This camera is ideal for a photographer that likes to take their camera everywhere, takes photos of their own life, shoots street scenes - a photographer that takes a lot of photos but wants the look and resolution of medium format. Well, guess what. I’m not that photographer. I don’t take many photos. I’m slow, contemplative, masochistic. I, for some stupid reason, need my photos to cost more per exposure. I need each photo to be a slow, often-frustrating endeavor with endless possibilities for things to go wrong. Why do you think I’m so drawn to large format and 6x17? High-stakes photography that’s nearly impossible to justify to people…that’s my style of photography. Enter the Fuji GW690 II. They call it “the Texas Leica”. That’s because it looks like a Leica ate an entire steer. Its massive 6x9 negative packs plenty of bank account-draining resolution into a roll of 120. It is entirely mechanical (it doesn’t even have a battery) and it won’t help you out with jack squat. You gotta do everything on your own. But don’t screw up, because each exposure will cost you $2.50-$3.00. Yes. This is the perfect camera for me. Website: https://www.nickcarverphoto.com Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/nickcarver

What can I say? I’m growing my hair out and letting the beard fill in. Really embracing that “homeless guy” vibe. Anyway, onto photography. Yes, this is the final part of my 4-part video series all about 6x17 photography. This time we’re talking about the artistic stuff. You know, the intangible stuff, the completely subjective stuff, the stuff that has no definite right or wrong and is perpetually debatable. Those are the topics I like to tackle because there’s no chance any viewer will find fault in what I’m saying. No chance. So get ready, ladies and gentlemen, because I’m about to cure the entire world of artistic uncertainty. I have all the answers on what it takes to create a great panoramic composition. And I’m sharing all of those answers in this 21-minute video. I’m just playin’ guys. Just some 6x17 goofin’. Despite all the “rule of thirds” crop overlays and “golden ratios” and that swirly line drawing thing they overlay on famous artworks to show how the artist used math to create a perfect composition…despite all that, I know composition is subjective and it’s not an exact science. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, to each his own, etc etc. But I thought you might like to hear my take on it anyway. Enjoy! This print belongs in the garbage?!! Cutting my photos in half is progress?!! Photographer hate him for this one simple trick!! Those are just some of the other clickbait thumbnails I considered for this video. Yeah…I’m getting so good at this YouTube stuff. Are you ready for some know-nothing know-it-all to lecture you on the subtleties of photographic style and how pursuing an artist style isn’t as simple as it seems? Well then you’ve come to the right place. Buckle up, amigos, because I’m about to vomit my hard-earned lessons all over you. A photographer’s “style” is difficult to define. Is it that all of their photos have the same color palette or the same exposure or the same “look”? That’s basically just a Lightroom preset. Is that really all “style” is? Not in my mind. An artist’s or photographer’s style is much more than that. It’s that intangible, indescribable essence of their work that makes you say “ah, yes, that’s definitely a such-and-such piece.” It’s that artist’s core embodied in a photo or a painting or a song or sculpture. Someone else may be able to copy their use of color or composition, but that don’t mean it’s the same style. Finding my photographic style has been a hell of a bumpy ride. And I still haven’t fully found it! I think I’m on the right track, but who knows if future Nick will agree? There’s only one way to find out: post this video and hope I don’t cringe watching it in 10 years. Enjoy these grandiose ramblings of a photographer constantly struggling to MEAN SOMETHING TO THIS WORLD through his work. It’s a super healthy mindset to be in. Highly recommended. But you know what I don’t like? The term “fine art.” Lemme grab my ascot and pipe because I be getting all sorts of pretentious dropping “fine art” to describe my own work. “Oh, this photo I took? Yes, it’s art…FINE art.” Bleh. Yuck. But what am I supposed to do, call it “average art”? You can see the dilemma I’m in here. Whatever you want to call it, I love making framed prints. It’s the best. I don’t get a chance to do it very often, so when I do get the chance, you bet your ass I’m going to make a video about it. And this one’s extra fantastic because I actually made TWO fine art prints this time. Huh? What? No, can’t be. TWO? That’s more than any one photographer can handle. It’s impossible. I’m telling the truth, friends…TWO PRINTS. And you know what’s even better? One of them is a pigment print on Hahnemühle photo rag paper while the other is a c-type print on Fuji Crystal Archive Pearl Paper. So we’re going to look at how these bad boys compare. Two different printing technologies, two different papers, one 6x17 negative on Kodak Portra 160 film. Let’s dive into it. I know...deep stuff there, Nick. GROUNDBREAKING observation. But hey while we're on useless, obvious platitudes...the best camera is the one that's with you and cameras don't take pictures, people do. Can you believe some people actually say those things thinking they're f'ing Aristotle? Anyway, let's talk about this video. Yessir we're covering lenses in this one as I continue my multi-part video series all about 6x17 photography. Yay! Lenses! Everybody loves good glass. Oh yeah...if you want to sound real professional, don't call your lenses "lenses", call 'em "glass." Here, example sentence: "Yeah, man, that 210 is the best piece of glass in my bag. It'll make your eyes bleed." I'll be covering the lenses I use for my 6x17 photography and what kinds of views they'll give you. I'll also go into extensive explanations on focal length, angle of view, crop factors, aperture limits, image circles, and filters. Even if you're not interested in 6x17 I think you'll find something useful here as it applies to lenses in general. You should probably at least be into photography as a whole, though. It’s time for one of them photography on locations. This time I’m photographing the wonder and glory of a pallet yard in Los Angeles. Yessir, this is the kind of thing a photographer dreams of shooting someday. What’s that? You want to shoot Yosemite or Mesa Arch or the Grand Canyon? Well GET IT OUTTA HERE. Not in my house, kid. Ugly industrial photos or nothing. I’ll be breakin’ out ol’ reliable for this one - my Shen Hao TFC 617-A with some Kodak Portra 160 film. That’ll be for the main event. Then I’ll put some miles on my lovely Fujifilm GA645Zi. But wait a minute…what’s that? No. It can’t be. *gasp* Why, yes it is! That’s Ilford Kentmere Pan 400 film in 120 format! Truly unbelievable. …yeah Ilford sent me some film before they officially released it. I shot one roll. Not enough to make a full judgement call on it, but hey, at least I’m trying something new for a change. Will it replace my beloved Kodak Tri-X? Well you’ll just have to watch the video to find out! Or continue reading, because I’m about to give you the answer right here. You ready? The answer is no. Kentmere’s great and it’s super affordable, but I don’t take kindly to change. But you know what? I’m not a selfish guy. I don’t expect you to just sit politely while I make you gaze upon all the splendor and glory that is my photography. I’m not a PSYCHOPATH. I want to give you something in exchange for looking at my photos. Something precious, something priceless, something more valuable than all the gold in Fort Knox: MY KNOWLEDGE and THOUGHTS and OPINIONS. I know, I’m a generous guy. So here are my images shoved in your face disguised amongst some compositional tips and musings. I got 7 of ‘em here along with 6 polaroids. Of the 7, I got a few 4x5 large format compositions and some 6x17 shots - all on Kodak Portra 160 and Kodak Portra 400. I’m trying to keep up a decent level of variety and creativity with this project, which is difficult at times due to the unvarying nature of my subject. After all, the same 3-arch building can only look so different one location to another. And that’s something we’re going to talk about in this video - how to keep creativity alive in your photography and how to nitpick your compositions until you’re pulling your hair out. That’s how I like to roll. Get obsessive over every single mind-numbing detail in a photo so that I only end up taking about a dozen photos a year and spend the moments in between wondering how I’ll ever create a robust portfolio at this snail’s pace. But hey I’m just out here takin’ it one day at a time, you know? Just tryin’ to get by. It’s a crazy rat race, this thing we call life. We’re all flyin’ through space on this big blue marble wondering about our place in all of it. It’ll really make your head spin if you don’t stop and slow down once in awhile to smell your blessings and count the roses, amirite guys? Yeah alright there buddy you have a good one. AND YES, I KNOW you can make stitched panos with your fancy mirrorless contraption without having to buy a stupid 6x17 camera. AND YES, I KNOW I LOOK A LITTLE LIKE WIL WHEATON. Also Matt Day. Sorry to fly off the handle like that. It’s getting late and I’m tired and I’ve been listening to myself talk about 6x17 photography for the past 2 days. I’ve had it up to here with me. I shouldn’t take it out on you, my sweet prince. And I say prince not princess because my YouTube viewing audience is 95.9% male, so I’m just playing the odds. Can you believe that percentage? It’s a real sausage fest over here. The ladies decidedly DO NOT need summa dis. What were we talking about? Oh, yeah. 6x17 cameras. This 6x17 stuff ain’t cheap, I get it. But it’s not for your average Carhartt-beanie-wearing Portra-400-overexposin’ photographer. That’s what Mamiya 7’s are for. (I love you guys don’t be mad). 6x17 is a unique format that requires unique equipment. It’s meant to be slow and contemplative. 4 frames per roll of 120…that’s the real expense. Nevermind the camera. But here’s the great news: 6x17 offers a unique photography experience unmatched by any other format. It’s just f’ing special…and fun. And you can take THAT to the bank. I love 6x17 photography. I never tire of it. I want to share it with all you fine folks. I want to show you the world (of 6x17 photography). Shining, shimmering splendid. Thanks for watching!
