2:: Champagne! The Sound of Lumbye and His Idols (Concerto Copenhagen & Lars Ulrik Mortensen)

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 15.12.2023 · 10:41:35 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· With the establishment of Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens in 1843, the Danish composer and conductor Hans Christian Lumbye (1810–1874) swiftly rose to fame as the city’s internationally acclaimed king of waltzes and galops, leading his orchestra from the violin. For this recording, Lars Ulrik Mortensen and Concerto Copenhagen – Scandinavia’s leading period instruments ensemble – studied Lumbye’s original scores and used instruments from the era to recreate an authentic sound. This collection showcases Lumbye’s enchanting music, along with popular pieces by his idols, Lanner and Strauss I.

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 23.11.2023 · 13:20:55 ··· ···
4:: Joachim Andersen: Works for Flute and Piano (album trailer)

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 25.10.2023 · 14:06:33 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Joachim Andersen (1847-1909) charted an exceptionally diverse path in his career. At the heart of it, he stood as a founding member of the Berlin Philharmonic, adroitly balancing roles as a conductor and a solo flautist of great renown. His legacy includes the composition of eight volumes of études, now considered a cornerstone of the flute repertoire. Andersen emerges as a composer deeply rooted in his era, a sentiment vividly expressed through the enchanting and emotionally resonant tapestry of his works for flute and piano. This essence springs to life in these performances, impeccably interpreted by Alena Walentin and Berit Johansen Tange. Album release 17 November 2023. 01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 12.05.2023 · 07:37:57 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Between 1851 and 1857, Peter Heise (1830–1879) wrote six string quartets for the intimate musical soirées of Copenhagen’s refined upper class. Heise was a celebrated and cherished composer in his native Denmark, but his quartets sadly fell into obscurity. In the first 0installment of their two-part series, the Nordic String Quartet revives these elegantly fluid works with a spacious and lyrical approach, infusing a sensibility attuned to Heise’s distinctive poetic touch. 6:: Line Tjørnhøj: enTmenschT (uddrag)

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 11.05.2023 · 09:47:29 ··· ···
Albummet udkommer 19. marts. Link til streaming: lnk.to/enTmenshcT

7:: Hans Graf on Paul von Klenau's Symphony No. 8

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 11.05.2023 · 09:38:47 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Chief conductor Hans Graf about finding the new in the old scores of Danish-born composer Paul von Klenau. Born Danish, for most of his life Paul von Klenau worked in Germany and Austria. After nearly four decades, Klenau returned to Copenhagen in 1940 and remained there until his death in 1946, aged 63. In his lifetime, he never achieved recognition as a composer from his native Denmark, and his music was largely forgotten after his passing. Although musicologists often speak of Klenau’s advocacy for Schoenberg and his twelve-tone technique, his music has also been described as influenced by the likes of Bruckner, Mahler and Richard Strauss. It was music for the stage that interested Klenau the most, writing seven operas from 1913 to 1940. Of his surviving nine symphonies, the first three come from his early years in Germany from 1903-1910, and the remaining six in his final years from 1938 to 1945. Klenau’s Eighth Symphony was written in 1942. Compared to his final, Ninth Symphony – a huge affair for orchestra, chorus and soloists, clearly a Beethovenian gesture from the aging composer – his Eighth is short and much simpler. Titled "Im alten Stil" ("In Olden Style") it is music styled in the traditions of the Baroque and Classical period, with nods to sonata form, the minuet and the rondo. The score survives only in Klenau’s own autograph, and was published in 2020 for performance. A recording of the symphony will be released on the album Concertos · Symphony No. 8, which also includes Klenau's Piano Concerto and Violin Concerto on 12 May. Singapore Symphony Orchestra Hans Graf, conductor

8:: Søren Rastogi: Paul von Klenau's Piano Concerto

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 08.05.2023 · 09:32:37 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Søren Rastogi has recorded Paul von Klenau's Piano Concerto with Singapore Symphony Orchestra. In this video, he plays the main theme of the first movement, demonstrating Klenau's unique blend of atonal melodies with Romantic harmonisation. "Klenau's musical idiom is both innovative and traditional. By letting the harmonies follow the atonal twelve-tone melody, we get a music that mixes the basic harmonic colours like a kaleidoscope. New and surprising constellations are constantly being formed, in a tonal language that is both recognisable and completely unique to the composer", says @sorenrastogi. "It has been incredibly exciting for me to work with such a virtuoso and complex work, which constantly instists on seeking a simple tonal language. It's wonderful to play – and hopefully also to listen to." The album Concertos · Symphony No. 8 will be released on Friday 12 May. Pre-save via link in bio.

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 19.04.2023 · 14:41:10 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· With The Gospel of Mary, the Icelandic composer Hugi Guðmundsson brings to life a long-forgotten gospel that challenges the established narrative surrounding the role of Mary Magdalene by portraying her as an apostle of equal importance to her male counterparts, inviting us to listen to a voice that was silenced by history. Album out on 28 April 2023. World premiere recording by Århus Sinfonietta, Schola Cantorum and soprano Berit Norbakken, conducted by Hörður Áskelsson

··· ··· ··· ··· This album presents a glimpse of Paul von Klenau’s vast collection of music created during the Second World War when he produced works, almost obsessively, until his passing in 1946. The album includes world premiere recordings of Klenau’s Violin Concerto, Piano Concerto and Symphony No. 8 , showcasing his mastery of both tonal and atonal sonorities, his distinctive introspective style, and his exceptional talent for venturing into uncharted musical realms. 11:: Else Marie Pade: EMP2 (album teaser)

··· ··· ··· ··· Dacapo Records continues new digital Else Marie Pade series! On 7 April, the second volume in a new series of digital EPs will be released, presenting new-found and restored electronic sound material by Else Marie Pade. EMP2 presents the two purely electronic works Glasperlespil I and II (Glass Bead Game I and II) composed in 1959. The works are partly inspired by the novel The Gass Bead Game by Hermann Hesse (1943) and partly from the actual game which Pade had played with when she was young.

12:: Steingrímur Rohloff: Concerto Grosso (interview)

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 22.02.2023 · 09:01:46 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Steingrímur Rohloff has written a new Concerto Grosso for hornist Stefan Dohr, trombonist Jesper Busk Sørensen, trumpeter Gäbor Tarkövi and tuba player Jens Bjørn-Larsen. The Concerto Grosso was designed to unite all four distinguished soloists in a single work, resulting in what is thought to be the first concertante work of its specification. Loosely speaking, each solo instrument gets a movement to itself in Rohloff’s score but within the flexible tradition of the ‘concerto grosso’, whereby dialogue between all solo instruments – and the ‘tutti’ ensemble – pervades the whole work.
