S. Treasury yields were little changed on Wednesday as investors looked ahead to the release of the minutes from the Federal Reserve's last meeting. At 4:08 a.m. ET, the yield on the 10-year Treasury was less than one basis point lower at 4.2714%. The 2-year Treasury yield was last down by just over two basis points to 4.5891%. Yields and prices have an inverted relationship. One basis point equals 0.01%. Investors awaited the release of minutes from the Fed's January meeting, which could provide fresh hints about the path ahead for interest rates. Prior to the January meeting, traders had been pricing in a high chance of rate cuts beginning as early as March. In a post-meeting press conference, however, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said this was unlikely, dampening hopes from investors. Expectations have since moved to a June rate cut. Economic data released last week also moderated hopes that rate cuts will begin sooner rather than later, especially as Fed officials have indicated that their decision-making will be data-led. Both the consumer price index and producer price index came in hotter than expected for January, which suggested to many investors that inflation is more persistent than they had hoped. Alongside uncertainty about the timeline for rate cuts, questions have also emerged about how many rate cuts will take place this year. At the tail-end of 2023, the Fed indicated that it was expecting three cuts to take place this year. Investors were hopeful that more cuts than this would happen, but Fed policymakers have since suggested it could be even fewer. As well as the release of the minutes, investors are also looking to a host of comments from Fed officials throughout the week for fresh hints about the monetary policy outlook. It's bought powerful Russian weapons systems and its outspoken President Recep Tayyip Erdogan openly lambastes leaders of allied Western countries. Relations between Turkey and the West have been strained, to say the least. But with the decision to allow Sweden into NATO in late January — a move that required unanimous approval by all 31 members of the alliance — it's as if a switch has been flipped. Within hours of Ankara's decision, the U. S. approved a $23 billion sale for F-16 fighter jets to Turkey that had been delayed since 2021. The State Department's Victoria Nuland said that Turkey would immediately begin receiving modernization kits for their F-16s, and that Washington would be "delighted" to welcome Turkey back into the F-35 program for NATO's most advanced fighter jet, as soon as the allies resolved the issue of Turkey's Russian weapons system purchases. It's worth noting that Hungary has yet to approve Sweden's NATO bid, and remains the only member of the alliance standing in the way of the Nordic country's accession."No country within the western orbit has taken so many problematic steps only to be welcomed back with open arms," David Lepeska, a Turkish and Eastern Mediterranean affairs columnist wrote for UAE outlet The National. Turkey seemingly has a unique position that allows it to push the envelope and cross lines with its NATO allies. And it's also welcomed back with open arms after a single change in position, despite calls for stricter accountability by some U. S. lawmakers."My approval of Turkey's request to purchase F-16 aircraft has been contingent on Turkish approval of Sweden's NATO membership. But make no mistake: This was not a decision I came to lightly," Democratic Senator Ben Cardin, chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said in a statement. Sen. Chris Van Hollen said he welcomed Turkey's ratification, but added: "I continue to have serious concerns about President Erdogan's ongoing attacks against our Syrian Kurdish allies, his aggressive actions in the Eastern Mediterranean, and the role he played in supporting Azerbaijan's military assaults against Nagorno-Karabakh … It is clear that we must keep a close watch on Turkey in the weeks and months ahead – actions speak louder than words."The more a country is needed by its allies and partners on a strategic or economic level, the more it can get away with, geopolitical analysts point out. Turkey has the second-largest military in NATO after the U. S., its Incirlik air base is a pivotal takeoff point for Western sorties into the Middle East like fighter jet flights over Syria and Iraq during the anti-IS campaign, and it even houses some 50 American nuclear warheads. Now, with some veteran executive hires and cost-cutting, it's trying to get back to basics. JetBlue was a pioneer in seat-back entertainment, free Wi-Fi, good snacks and a business-class cabin with lie-flat seats that debuted at lower prices than rivals'. More recently, it's ventured across the Atlantic with flights to London, Paris, Amsterdam and Dublin. And, until a judge blocked the deal last month, it planned to buy budget airline Spirit Airlines for $3.8 billion. (The carriers are appealing that decision.)While JetBlue has never lacked big ideas, it has come up short on profits, cost control and reliability. Those challenges will be top of mind for incoming CEO Joanna Geraghty when she takes the helm on Monday, replacing Robin Hayes. Geraghty, 51, has been at JetBlue for nearly two decades, most recently as president and chief operating officer. By naming her CEO, the company is promoting an insider who knows the complexities of running an airline with quirks like New York's congested airspace. She's the first woman to lead a U. S. passenger airline."The key strategic challenge we've always faced is how to thrive as a small player in an industry dominated by four large airlines," Geraghty said on a Jan. 30 earnings call, referring to American, Delta, United and Southwest, which control about 80% of the domestic market. Last week, JetBlue said it has hired back the airline's former chief commercial officer, Marty St. George, 59, as president. St. George left the carrier in 2019 after 13 years and most recently worked at Latam Airlines as chief commercial officer. St. George, who also had previous posts at United Airlines and US Airways, is well-regarded by industry watchers for his experience and good relationship with frontline workers."Marty will be a much needed force of good for JetBlue for improving the airline's operational focus and reliability," said Henry Harteveldt, a former airline executive who runs the consulting firm Atmosphere Research Group. "Legroom doesn't matter, snacks don't matter if your schedule can't be trusted."JetBlue also promoted Warren Christie, who previously was the head of safety, security, fleet operations, and airports, to take over Geraghty's role as COO. Geraghty, whom JetBlue declined to make available for an interview, will have to convince investors and customers about the company's turnaround. JetBlue's last annual profit was in 2019, before the pandemic. Wall Street analysts aren't forecasting it will turn a profit until 2025, while other carriers have already returned to profitability in the post-Covid travel surge. JetBlue's shares are down 29% over the last 12 months, while the NYSE Arca Airline index is up nearly 6% over that period. JetBlue ranked ninth in punctuality for U. S.
