Credits to https://listverse.com/ Religious relics are, by their very nature, held to be sacrosanct by believers. Holy objects are venerated by a number of religions and have been for millennia. Something touched by the divine was thought to help worshippers become closer to their gods. Therefore, you might think that such objects are safe from being stolen. But religious relics have a value, and where there is a possible profit, then there will be someone willing to risk the wrath of God to steal them. Here are ten times religious relics have been purloined throughout history. Related: Top 10 Intriguing Cases Involving Art About Jesus 10 The Holy Foreskin The Holy Foreskin of Jesus Christ In Catholicism, holy relics were thought to offer miracles to the faithful. Something associated with a saint in life could do the trick, but even better was a part of their body. Even better than bits of saints were artifacts connected to Jesus. Unfortunately, when Jesus was taken bodily into heaven, he took most of his flesh with him. One part that was thought to still exist on Earth was the foreskin that was cut off him while he was still an infant. The Holy Prepuce, as it was known, was claimed by a number of churches in Europe. One of the holy foreskins was held in a golden cross in Rome until the city was sacked in 1527. This is not the theft that interests us, however. From Rome, it was taken to the village of Calcata and paraded annually for believers to see. In 1983 the parish priest made a shocking announcement to his flock—the foreskin was gone. He said that thieves had taken the relic from his home. There are some, however, who think that there may be more to this theft. By the 20th century, the Catholic church had become a bit embarrassed by people going to visit a part of Jesus’ penis. Writing or talking about the Holy Prepuce became punishable by excommunication. Was the foreskin stolen by the church itself to remove it from sight? Until it is rediscovered, the truth will likely never be known. [1] 9 Temple Menorah Is the Vatican Hiding the Menorah? Unpacked If you visit Rome, you can still see the Arch of Titus, erected in the 1st century AD, to celebrate Titus’s victory over the Jewish rebels and the capture of Jerusalem by the Romans. One of the panels carved into it shows booty carried through Rome in triumph. Held aloft by the soldiers is a candelabrum with seven branches. This is the menorah which once stood in the temple of Jerusalem. According to the Hebrew bible, it was made of solid gold and burned with consecrated olive oil throughout the night. The menorahs which had stood in the first temple were stolen by the Babylonians centuries earlier, and the one shown on the arch of Titus came from the second temple. What happened to the menorah after its trip to Rome? According to a 2nd-century rabbi, it could still be seen in Rome at that time, but after that, it fell out of the historical record. It may have been one of the treasures the Romans displayed in their Temple of Peace. When that temple burned down, the menorah might have been destroyed, though later sources claim it was stolen again by Vandals and carried off after they took Rome. [2] 8 A Holy Bell Visitors to Loch Shiel in Scotland could once go to an island holy to St. Finan and see a bell that might have been there for 1,000 years. Unfortunately, in 2019, it was taken by a thief and has yet to be recovered. Security on the quiet island was not particularly effective. The bell was once attached to the altar of the ruined church by a chain that came from a lavatory. Not long before the theft, this weak chain was replaced by one hand-forged from bronze to ensure the bell could not be stolen. This did not deter the thief, however, who must have come armed with tools. Because the island is remote and uninhabited, no one knows exactly when the bell was taken. This was not the first time the bell had been removed from the island. During the Jacobite rebellion of 1745, a British soldier had stolen the bell. When he was ca...

The rules of the game are simple: Two opponents lock their toes together and try to pin their opponent’s foot to the ground. The first person to successfully pin their opponent’s foot down for three seconds wins the match. Despite its unusual premise, toe wrestling has gained a loyal following. There are even world championships held annually in the UK, where competitors from all over the world gather to compete for the title of world champion. One of the reasons that toe wrestling has become so popular is that it’s a sport that anyone can participate in, regardless of age or skill level. It doesn’t require a lot of expensive equipment or training, and it’s a fun way to exercise and socialize with others. The game is played with a large ball set on fire, adding an element of danger and excitement to the already intense game. Players wear protective gear and must be skilled in both soccer techniques and fire safety to participate. The objective is the same as traditional soccer: to score goals by kicking the ball into the opposing team’s net. Fireball soccer is not only a sport but also an art form. The flames from the ball create a mesmerizing display as it’s kicked and passed around the field. The game requires quick reflexes, agility, and teamwork, making it a great way to build camaraderie and sportsmanship among players. However, safety is always a top priority in fireball soccer. Trained professionals oversee the game, and strict safety guidelines are implemented to ensure no one gets hurt. The game is played in a controlled environment, and players must follow all safety protocols to participate. 8 Goanna Pulling Have you ever heard of goanna pulling? It’s a traditional Australian sport in which two people face each other with a heavy leather strap joining them around their necks, then they pull each other in a version of tug-of-war. The participants first lay on their bellies then raise their upper bodies. The straps are then placed around their necks. The game gets it name from the position the participants seem to mimic: that of a goanna lizard. Goanna pulling has its origins in the 19th century to honor the game’s namesake lizard. However, the world’s first Australian National Goanna Pulling Championships were held in 1984, in the town of Wooli, New South Wales, Australia. Goanna pulling is not only about brute strength; it’s also about strategy and technique. Players need to know how to position their body and pull to exert maximum force on their opponent. The sport is not without risks, however. Players can suffer from injuries such as muscle strains, sprains, and sometimes even fractures. That’s why safety measures are taken to ensure that the sport is played in a safe environment. 7 Stick Horse Dressage ‘Biggest Hobby Horse event in the world’ takes place in Finland Stick horse dressage is a surprisingly popular equestrian discipline that is gaining traction. He was born on the night of November 30, 1835, when the comet was visible in the sky over his hometown of Florida, Missouri. Twain believed that he was destined to die when the comet returned. He famously said, “I came in with Halley’s Comet in 1835; it’s coming again next year [in 1910], and I expect to go out with it. It would be a great disappointment in my life if I don’t. The Almighty has said, no doubt: ‘Now here are these two unaccountable freaks; they came in together, they must go out together.’” Twain died of a heart attack on April 21, 1910, one day after the comet’s closest approach to Earth. one day after Halley’s Comet appeared at its brightest 9 Independence Day Deaths John Adams’ Thomas Jefferson’s Death July 4th, 1826 HBO Max John Adams and Thomas Jefferson were political adversaries who became friends later in life. They both died on July 4, 1826, which was the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Adams had been in comparatively robust health until just a few months earlier when he became ill. Adams died at his home in Quincy, Massachusetts, at about five in the late afternoon, at the age of 90. He collapsed in his reading chair and lapsed in and out of consciousness for the next few hours before succumbing. According to newspaper reports, Adams’s last words were, “Jefferson still lives.” However, Jefferson actually died first, just after noon that same day, at his mansion, Monticello. Jefferson had been ill for an extended period and fell into a coma on July 3, 1826, after suffering from a long intestinal illness. He was 83. In the course of a few days, news of Jefferson’s death arrived from Virginia. After the deaths were announced, eulogies were pronounced across the country, and commemorations were printed in newspapers. After years of estrangement, they resumed writing to each other in their retirement years. They wrote to each other about many topics, personal and political, including the growing division in the country. “I look back with rapture on those golden days when Virginia and Massachusetts lived and acted together like a band of brothers,” Adams wrote Jefferson in 1825. Their deaths on the same day, despite their political differences, have become a symbol of the unity and shared values of the early American republic. 8 Breaking the Lincoln Curse In His Father’s Shadow: Robert Todd Lincoln Was Abraham Lincoln cursed? He himself witnessed three assassinations during his presidency. The first was the assassination of Elmer Ellsworth, a Union Army colonel, who was shot by a hotel owner in Alexandria, Virginia, in May 1861. The second was the assassination of Union Army General James B. McPherson, who was shot during the Battle of Atlanta in July 1864. The third and most famous was Lincoln’s own assassination at the Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C., on April 14, 1865, by John Wilkes Booth. But perhaps it was Booth’s own family that could break the curse. Abraham Lincoln’s son, Robert Todd Lincoln, was saved by Edwin Booth, the brother of John Wilkes Booth, who would later assassinate Abraham Lincoln. This incident occurred on a train platform in Jersey City in 1864 when Robert Todd Lincoln was traveling to Washington, D.C., to meet his father. Edwin Booth, who was a famous actor at the time, saw Robert Todd Lincoln fall between the platform and the train and...

Credits to https://listverse.com/ Theoretically, death row inmates should have the toughest time breaking out of prison. They aren’t in minimum security prisons, after all. And they aren’t allowed to do work release programs, weekend furloughs, or daytime labor gigs in the community. In most states, convicted murderers spend all day locked up in tiny single cells. With maybe an hour here or there for exercise, the rest of their time is spent in solitary confinement far away from the general prison population and light years away from the public. Or at least it should be. So how did it all go wrong on May 31, 1984, when not one or two but six death row inmates escaped from Virginia’s Mecklenburg Correctional Center? The shocking and brazen prison break is still a fascinating story for prison officials and crime reporters to study four decades later. It marks both a significant breakdown in prison policy as well as a cautionary tale about what can happen when sadistic, violent individuals get together and plot for a purpose. So today, you’ll learn all about the Briley Brothers, the fake bomb threat, and the rest of the story behind the Mecklenburg Correctional Center prison break of 1984. Never before or since has a jailbreak been so crazy—or so successful. It seems like it should be a blockbuster movie script or a wild television thriller, but it’s not! This is the true story of one of the wildest events in the history of American prisons. Related: 10 Serial Killers Who Were Shockingly Released From Prison Early 10 A Prison Unlike Any Other… WAVY Archive: 1982 Mecklenburg Prison The Mecklenburg Correctional Center was supposed to be escape-proof. When it was opened in the spring of 1977, Virginia Governor Mills E. Godwin showed up to the ceremony. He touted the prison as being a state-of-the-art facility. As he cut the ribbon to open the prison, he boasted about the millions of dollars that went into constructing it. Criminal justice was coming to Virginia, Godwin claimed, and it was going to bring the state quickly and completely into the modern age. Hundreds of people were on hand for Godwin’s fiery opening day speech. Reporters documented his words, and flashbulbs went off as he boasted about the importance of being tough on crime. The prison was to represent “a firm and lasting and unbreakable connection between crime and punishment,” Godwin boomed during the event. Virginia residents were excited about the historic facility as a deterrent for crime. But Godwin had no idea what would happen just seven years after his bombastic speech about building the perfect place for incarceration. In time, the Mecklenburg Correctional Center was to be the site of the largest death row prison break in American history. [1] 9 Until the Briley Brothers Show Up The Briley Brothers’ Killing Rampage Just a few years after Mecklenburg was first built and opened, the Briley brothers went on a rampage around Richmond. Over a seven-month period in 1979, Linwood, Anthony, and James Briley had their way with innocent civilians all around the Virginia town. They committed sadistic murders, rapes, and robberies. Cops always seemed to be one step behind them as the Briley boys ruined innocent lives all over town. Finally, though, they were caught. As their case wound through court, it quickly became clear Linwood and James were destined for death row. By 1984, that’s exactly where they were. But they didn’t just sit in jail and wait to die. Instead, they worked their contacts on the inside by shrewdly making friends with guards. As soon as Linwood and James got to Mecklenburg, they began working the system. They were smart and cunning, and they knew how to influence people. They got on the guards’ good sides and made friends with other inmates. Immediately, the guards liked that they were seemingly helpful and easygoing. Soon, they gained the trust of several key guards on death row. But what the guards didn’t know was that the Briley brothers were always watching. They had figure...

But what if a movie not only entertains us but also breaks the fourth wall, blurring the line between fiction and reality? For those unfamiliar with the term, breaking the fourth wall is when a character acknowledges the audience’s existence, breaking the invisible barrier between the story and the viewer. Let’s dive into the realm of movies that have taken the bold and hilarious step of breaking the fourth wall. Get ready to laugh, gasp, and question everything you thought you knew about movies! Related: Top 10 Movies That Changed Film-Making Forever 10 Deadpool: The Merc with a Mouth Let’s kick things off with a bang, or rather, a sarcastic comment. Deadpool is a superhero movie like no other. Ryan Reynolds brings the foul-mouthed anti-hero to life, constantly addressing the audience with witty remarks, inside jokes, and self-awareness that will have you rolling in the aisles. It’s like having Deadpool sitting beside you, cracking jokes and making fun of the superhero genre. But it’s not just about making jokes—breaking the fourth wall allows filmmakers to play with narrative structure in interesting ways. For example, in Deadpool 2, there’s a scene where Deadpool travels back in time to the events of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a much-maligned film that starred Ryan Reynolds as a different version of Deadpool. Acknowledging the previous film’s existence, the filmmakers can comment on its flaws and poke fun at themselves. 9 Psycho: A Message from “Mother” Psycho (12/12) Movie CLIP – She Wouldn’t Even Harm a Fly (1960) HD Alfred Hitchcock’s movie Psycho, released in 1960, is a psychological horror-thriller that has become one of cinematic history’s most iconic and influential films. The film tells the disturbing story of Marion Crane, who embezzles money and ends up at the Bates Motel, owned by Norman Bates, a seemingly harmless but deeply troubled young man. Psycho breaks the fourth wall in a subtle but clever way during the film’s final scene. In the movie’s climax, the audience witnesses the plot’s resolution, and Norman Bates, the main antagonist, has been apprehended and institutionalized. The final scene shows Norman sitting in a holding cell, and as the camera slowly zooms in on his face, the soundtrack begins a monologue. Norman’s inner thoughts, represented by a voice-over, narrate the scene, revealing his deeply disturbed psychology and the reasons behind his violent actions throughout the film. Hitchcock’s decision to break the fourth wall in this final scene serves as a brilliant narrative tool to not only provide closure to the story but also to heighten the impact of the film’s psychological horror elements. By revealing Norman’s thoughts to the audience, Hitchcock blurs the line between the spectators and the fictional world, immersing them even further into the character’s psychological turmoil. 8 The Truman Show: Life as a Reality TV Show The Truman Show (5/9) Movie CLIP – Do Something! (1998) HD In The Truman Show, the main character, Truman Burbank, lives in a world that is a TV show. The entire town, including his family and friends, are actors, and everything that happens around him is scripted. But Truman doesn’t know this. He thinks he is living a normal life until he starts noticing strange things around him. One of the ways that the movie breaks the fourth wall is by having the characters talk directly to the camera. For example, the show’s producer, Christof, speaks to the audience about his plans for Truman and how he is manipulating him. Another way the movie breaks the fourth wall is by having the actors interact with the set. Truman tries to leave the town and discovers that everything around him is fake. The Truman Show is a masterclass in breaking the fourth wall. It makes the audience feel like they are a part of the story and creates a sense of intimacy that is hard to achieve in other movies. 7...

These heroes are able to channel their abilities at a moment’s notice to save a person, city, or even an entire universe from danger with ease. In contrast, when we think of children, we typically do not equate them with the same heroic characteristics based on their small stature, limited physical abilities, and lack of certain understanding. As adults, we typically perceive that it is our responsibility to protect them from danger. However, the children on this list proved that notion to be completely untrue. When suddenly placed amid adversity and danger, they were willing to take whatever steps necessary to assist those in need, some even willing to literally risk both life and limb. Here are the stories of ten extraordinary children who proved to be real-life superheroes and saved the day. Carter Middle School in Warren, Michigan, was riding the bus home on the afternoon of April 26, 2023. Little did he know that the ride on the bus that day would be anything but ordinary. The unnamed female bus driver behind the wheel of Bus 46 attempted to cool herself off by waving her hat near her face but later contacted a dispatcher stating she was feeling dizzy and would need to pull over. She then requested another driver to pick up the schoolchildren. However, approximately 15 seconds later, the bus driver began shaking and losing consciousness, causing the bus to drift leftward off the road and into oncoming traffic. While the other students on the bus were engrossed in their cell phones and listening to music, Dillon didn’t have a cell phone, which allowed him to be alert on the ride home and notice the bus driver in distress. Dillon immediately got up from his seat, took the wheel, and slowly pushed on the brakes as he urged the other students to call 911. Thankfully, Dillon was able to safely bring the bus to a stop, avoiding an accident and saving all 60 students on board. Once the bus had come to a stop, a good Samaritan who happened to be walking by boarded the bus and helped Dillon with the bus driver. Another woman who had previously been driving behind the bus also stopped to assist the students in exiting the bus. Paramedics arrived on the scene to treat the bus driver, who was later released from the hospital. The students were then placed on another bus and transported home. On May 11, 2023, Dillon was honored by the mayor of Warren and given the key to the city and the opportunity to be police commissioner for a day. Her son, 13-year-old Owen Burns, was in his bedroom playing video games, and her unnamed 8-year-old daughter was mushroom-hunting in the backyard. Owen heard his sister scream but assumed she was simply goofing off with her friends. However, when he heard her let out a second scream, he realized his sister was in danger. Owen looked out his bedroom window and saw an unknown male who had come through the woods and onto their property. The attempted kidnapper had put his hands over the 8-year-old’s mouth, had his arm around her waist, and was attempting to pull her into the woods. Owen sprung into action, located a slingshot on his bed that his mother had bought on clearance for $3, and grabbed a marble and a rock. He then opened his bedroom wind...

Credits to https://listverse.com/ Lost cities have always captivated our imagination. From Atlantis to El Dorado and the Lost City of Z, we’ve always wondered how ancient civilizations really lived. Sure, some have been rediscovered, like Troy, Petra, Memphis, and Machu Picchu. But others remain shrouded in mystery. These lost cities aren’t limited to faraway lands, either. Europe has more than its own fair share of missing metropolises as well! So let’s explore ten long-lost ancient European cities. Although these places have vanished, historians hope to uncover their secrets one day. Some have been stumbled upon in small ways by chance in recent times. Others remain elusive and completely out of the public eye. A few more yet have even entered the realm of myth and legend. But we won’t stop wondering what became of these bustling urban centers. And maybe one day, we’ll know! Related: Top 10 Amazingly Preserved Ancient Foods 10 Evonium, Scotland Evonium is an ancient place steeped in Scottish history. And like all the rest on this list, it is shrouded in myth and legend. Its origins trace back to the ancient Scottish kings of centuries past. Hector Boece, a Scottish historian, first mentioned it in the 16th century. However, skepticism surrounds Boece’s accounts and the list of kings dating back to 330 BC. Many of them are intertwined with folklore and should be taken with caution. Despite this, the genealogy of these semi-mythical monarchs was established by the 13th century. So there is something there—even if it’s hard to parse. As for the lost city itself, the actual location of Evonium is a subject of debate. Many believe it to be at Dunstaffnage near Oban in western Scotland. Other Scottish historians suggest that if Evonium did exist, it would likely be found in Irvine, further south. Irvine held greater strategic significance as an administrative and military hub during the Middle Ages, unlike Dunstaffnage, which was secluded. Plus, Irvine’s surrounding lands were historically known as Cunninghame, meaning “king’s home,” at the time. That area’s association with numerous ancient Scottish rulers makes it a likely spot for Evonium to have been. Given the scarcity of reliable evidence, Evonium can be viewed as Scotland’s equivalent of England’s Camelot. It is a legendary and romanticized seat of power rather than a confirmed historical site. But that hasn’t stopped people from wondering what might have been. And where it might have been! [1] 9 Tartessos, Spain Tartessos: the Lost Iberian Civilization you’ve Never heard of Searching for Tartessos Documentary Tartessos was a very prosperous city in ancient times. It originally gained fame for its immense wealth and was often compared to the legendary El Dorado. Situated in present-day Andalusia, Spain, Tartessos was both a region and a bustling harbor city. Its culture blended influences from Phoenician and Paleohispanic people. Economically, it leveraged abundant metal deposits like copper, tin, lead, silver, and gold. The city’s prosperity became so renowned that it was even mentioned in the Bible. In the Old Testament’s Book of Kings 10:22, it is stated, “the navy of Tarshish [Tartessos]… brought gold, and silver, ivory, and apes, and peacocks” every few years. Due to the scarcity of historical sources and the semi-legendary nature of Tartessos, scholars initially considered it a myth. Some even speculated it might be the fabled Atlantis, as described by Herodotus. Considering its location beyond the Pillars of Hercules, now known as the Strait of Gibraltar, that was a common assumption. But the city really did exist—it’s just completely gone now. Adding to the intrigue, Tartessos is believed to have sunk in the marshes of the Guadalquivir River southwest of Seville. That waterway once served as a navigable estuary connecting inland communities to the Atlantic. Whatever the case was with Tartessos then, we don’t know much about it now. Beyond myth, legend, and possible fact—and likely a mix of the three—the famed former city of s...

However, not all sailors who head off to explore the great blue ocean return. Here are ten sailors who were eerily lost at sea. Related: 10 Shipwrecks That Are Still Unexplained 10 John Cabot John Cabot – Explorer Mini Bio BIO Giovanni Caboto was an Italian sailor who was born around 1450. However, it wasn’t until around 1495 that he decided to set his sights on becoming an explorer. To help finance the trip, he headed to Spain but was unable to secure funds from the king. So after anglicizing his name to John Cabot, he journeyed to England to get the support of the British crown. King Henry VII agreed to finance his journeys, and John Cabot set off on a successful expedition following a more northerly route than Columbus had taken just five years earlier. After 20 days, he reached land, thinking it was Asia, naming it “New Found Land” or Newfoundland. Not finding the treasures that other explorers had discovered, he did note the mass quantities of cod. He staked claim to the land in the name of the king of England and, soon after, returned to England. A year later, on his return trip, however, John Cabot wouldn’t have quite so much success. In about 1498, he headed off on another expedition to further chart a route departing west from Europe to Asia. And that’s the last anyone heard of him. After heading off with five ships to support his journey, no more records were made about John Cabot. To this day, we still don’t know if John Cabot disappeared while at sea or made it to a different continent but just didn’t write about it. So, for now, he’s thought to have been lost at sea on his final adventure. [1] 9 Vasco de Ataíde Vasco de Ataíde was a sailor from Portugal who, in 1500, joined Pedro Cabral on a trip to India. While the voyage was a success overall, poor Vasco de Ataíde never made it to his final destination. What happened was that Ataíde was captaining one of the ships in Pedro’s fleet. The ship left Cape Verde along Africa’s west coast in late March 1500. However, that was the last that was seen of them. Neither Ataíde nor the rest of his hundred and fifty crew members were seen again. And oddly enough, according to historical records from the time, there were no strong winds or storms that could have caused the ship trouble. To this day, it remains a mystery what happened to Vasco de Ataíde and his crew. [2] 8 Gaspar Corte-Real Gaspar Corte-Real was born in Portugal around 1450 and, like many other young men of his time, had a thirst for adventure and exploration. In 1500, Gaspar launched his sailing career, heading off on a voyage west from Portugal in the name of the king. Gaspar made his way to Greenland but, unable to make a safe landing, was forced to return to Portugal. One year later, he gathered enough money and supplies to head out on a second mission to the icy continent. Once again, he was unable to land in Greenland due to the icy terrain and ended up heading further south to Labrador. There, he captured several indigenous people, who he put in his boats to take back to Portugal. Several months later, two of Gaspar’s three ships made it back to London. Notably absent, however, was Gaspar himself, who had been aboard the third missing ship. No one knew what had happened to Gaspar or his remaining boat, and to this day, he remains lost at sea. [3] 7 Miguel Corte-Real Portuguese Theory of Oak Island If the name Corte-Real sounds familiar, that’s because Miguel Corte-Real was Gaspar Corte-Real’s brother. After his brother failed to return home from his expedition to Greenland in 1501, Miguel was distraught. Determined to find his brother and bring him back home to safety, Miguel gathered a crew and three ships of his own. In 1502, he set off from Portugal to search for his brother. The voyage was initially a success, and the group arrived at the landing sight of Gaspar. Armed with these new clues, the th...

Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use. Credits to https://listverse.com/ How often do you really think about bacteria? The microscopic organisms make up the vast majority of life on Earth, and there are some scientists who reckon that their potential is eye-watering. Our tiny, single-celled companions boast a vast array of properties and uses—pooping out gold, for example, or brewing their own alcohol. The microbial world is a surreal and fascinating one, of which there can be no doubt. Here are ten of the oddest scientific discoveries and experiments involving the bite-sized bugs. Related: 10 Deadly Viruses And Bacteria Created In Labs 10 The Microbe That Poops out Gold Meet the Bacteria That Produces Pure Gold Cupriavidus metallidurans is a pretty bizarre organism. The tiny bacterium gobbles up metal compounds and essentially poops out nuggets of gold. This unusual property all stems from how C. metallidurans interacts with its environment. The soils in which it lives are full of toxic minerals like copper and gold. Both metals are harmful in large quantities, but copper is essential for the microbe to survive. So the bacterium takes in minerals from the soil and converts them into a less dangerous form. If too much gold is present, C. metallidurans uses an enzyme known as CopA to avoid absorbing any toxic compounds. “This assures that fewer copper and gold compounds enter the cellular interior,” explained author Professor Dietrich H. Nies. “The bacterium is poisoned less, and the enzyme that pumps out the copper can dispose of the excess copper unimpeded. Another consequence: the gold compounds that are difficult to absorb transform in the outer area of the cell into harmless gold nuggets only a few nanometres in size.” [1] 9 100 Million-Year-Old Bacteria Dug Up from Ocean Floor These 100-Million-Year-Old Microbes Are Still Alive! In July 2020, scientists announced that they successfully retrieved bacteria from the seafloor of the Pacific Ocean thought to be over 100 million years old. These microbes are believed to be the oldest known organisms on Earth. The record-breaking microbes include ten major groups of bacteria lying dormant over 200 feet (70 meters) beneath the seafloor. International research vessel JOIDES Resolution excavated samples of clay from under the ocean bed in which the bacteria were discovered. After millions of years starved of nutrients, scientists were amazed to find that 99% of the microbes survived. The researchers incubated the organisms in a laboratory for 557 days, providing nourishment in carbon and nitrogen sources like ammonia, acetates, and amino acids. [2] 8 Spiteful Treatment Towards Lazy Colony Members How Do Colonies Help Microorganisms Survive? Odd as it may seem, evidence suggests that bacteria behave spitefully when their peers refuse to pull their weight. Jilted microbes have been known to deliberately harm themselves to get back at idle colony members. As explained in a 2022 report in PLOS Computational Biology, colonies of bacteria survive by producing vital chemicals, like enzymes which break down foods into nutrients. How much they make is decided by a behavior pattern known as quorum-sensing. When microbes sense that they are surrounded by many of their peers, they produce fewer enzymes. But some freeloading bugs refuse to make any at all and, instead, try to feast on the work of others. In this scenario, the scientists were surprised to learn that the other bacteria would also lower their chemical output. The result of all this is none of the microbes have enough to eat, and the entire colony can end up dying out. As the researchers put it, the microbes essentially commit “evolutionary suicide” to rid themselves of their idle peers. “We didn’t expect to see this behavior, which you might even call ‘spiteful,’” explained Dr Andrew Eckford, one of the study’s key authors. “But it indicates that quorum sensing is a remarkably flexible tool for enforcing fairness.” [3] 7 2,000 Generations of Bacteria Shed Light on Scientific Quandary The Longest-Running Evolution Experiment...

Specifically, the ring-necked version of the bird is all over the island. They’re not native, and they don’t migrate, so they didn’t just fly over from Africa or India. Somebody actually brought them to Britain and set them free to roam. Since then, they’ve multiplied and multiplied, and now they are a mainstay. But who brought them to live here in the first place? And why? One long-standing rumor claims it was Jimi Hendrix’s fault. As the story goes, he supposedly released a pair of parakeets on Carnaby Street during his 1968 London trip. For years now, no one has been able to say for sure if that really happened. And even if it did, Hendrix wouldn’t be responsible for the population. Parakeet sightings in Britain go all the way back to the 1800s. Plus, biologists now believe the first big release was likely in the early 1930s when “parrot fever” hit. English owners let their pets loose, and the rest is history. Experts think there were other occasions when large numbers of parakeets were released too. One significant event could be the Great Storm of 1987, which wrecked birdhouses across the country. That’s how these parakeets became feral and established themselves in Britain. Ever since, it’s caused a bit of a problem. But all those things combine to make one point on the matter: Jimi Hendrix is cleared! Even if he did release a pair of parakeets in 1968, they weren’t the reason for Britain’s aviary infestation. Take a claim that has been floating around for years about how, in 1967, they outsold both the Beatles and the Rolling Stones combined. Think about that. Of course, the claim was false! Outselling the Beatles and Stones (combined!) in the ’60s? No way! But the way it was started in the first place is an interesting early entry into the world of “fake news.” Monkees member Mike Nesmith admitted in 2015 that he completely made up the sales claim. To drive the point home in that 2015 interview, he called it a “complete fabrication” and a “lie.” The origin of this falsehood can be traced back to a 1977 interview in Australia. At the time, Nesmith was tired and bored of media appearances, so he decided to playfully mislead the interviewer by mixing fact with fiction. “Then came a point where he asked me about the sales of the Monkees records, and I saw the chance,” Nesmith recalled. “I said flatly that we sold over thirty-five million records in 1967. Death knows no age, ethnicity, marital status, or religion and can come when we least expect it. Yet no matter the timing, the process of death also brings unbearable grief and sadness for those who have been left behind as they try to cope and navigate a life that no longer includes those that were so dear. However, imagine being at a wake and hearing strange sounds coming from inside the coffin or being told that a loved one has passed, only to see them later exhibit clear signs of life. At first, one might assume that they are simply mistaken and that their own natural desire to have the deceased back in their life has caused a figment of the imagination. Now imagine that what you saw or heard was no mistake at all on your part but rather a declaration of death that was made in error. This list includes unfortunate but very real situations of a similar nature. Here are ten people who were declared dead but were still very much alive. Unfortunately, Montoya did not respond to resuscitation efforts and was declared dead a few hours later. Montoya was transported to a funeral home the same day, and her family prepared to hold a wake in her honor later that day. However, to the shock of those in attendance, approximately five hours into the wake, they began hearing strange sounds coming from inside Montoya’s coffin. When the casket was opened, Montoya was found inside, wrapped in sheets, breathing heavily, and very much alive. Naturally, Montoya’s family rushed her back to the hospital, where she was intubated and placed in intensive care. It is believed that when Montoya experienced cardiorespiratory arrest, she also began suffering from catalepsy, a trance-like state which causes a loss of voluntary motion, muscle rigidity, sensitivity to pain, and slowed breathing. Unfortunately, this mistaken set of symptoms may also have led to Montoya being declared dead. The health ministry has launched an investigation into the doctors who treated Montoya, and a technical committee has also been formed to review the hospital’s process of issuing death certificates. Sadly, Montoya died a week later after suffering a stroke while in the hospital. Berko was then taken to a local hospital, where doctors tirelessly continued performing CPR. Unfortunately, after two hours of unsuccessful attempts, Berko was pronounced dead. Berko’s parents, Jen and Craig, were left to say their goodbyes to their son, but just five short minutes later, something amazing happened—Berko began moving. The attending physician initially believed the movement to be nothing more than a reflex, but when Jen noticed Berko’s carotid artery move, Craig began shouting about Berko’s heartbeat and rushed to get help from the medical staff. The staff wasted no time in getting to Berko, and thankfully, they were able to stabilize him. As the Mongol Empire, Qing Dynasty, and Ottoman Empire collapsed and humanity adapted to the changes, so did cultural and culinary changes. However, what surprises us is that there are some meals from the ancient world that we find bizarre but have refused to leave the dining table even in the 21st century. These are ten bizarre foods from the ancient world that people still eat: Related: Top 10 Horrific Foods The Victorians Ate 10 Garum: The Fermented Fish Sauce of Ancient Rome I finally made GARUM Ancient Rome’s favorite condiment The name “garum” sounds like a nice dish, but in reality, it is made from fish allowed to ferment in the sun in a clay pot, with spices like dill, coriander, and other herbs. Garum was a popular condiment in ancient Rome. It has been referred to as the ketchup of the Roman world. Not surprisingly, making garum was an odiferous task—assigned to slaves and laborers in ancient Rome—as the processes involved were quite complex and time consuming. Throughout Roman times, Garum was sold at different grades and prices, depending on the fish used and the concentration of the liquid—the thinner, the better, and more expensive. Although the process involved in making garum has changed over the years as it spread to other regions of the world, garum as a fish sauce has survived several centuries and is still on the dining table today. [1] 9 Braised Flamingo Chicken is one of the most popular sources of protein in the world today. Still, humanity also indulges in other birds, namely turkey, and duck. Birds like quail, grouse, goose, and swan are also eaten, but very few people are keen on the flamingo. The braised flamingo is a delicacy from the distant past that has made it to the 21st century. Everything about the flamingo is weird. It is a thin and strange-looking bird that moves and flies awkwardly. They have naturally white feathers that change to pink from a diet rich in beta-carotene, the same chemical that makes carrots orange. Braised flamingo was a dish reserved for the wealthy who could afford it in ancient Rome. It was a status symbol tantamount to flaunting one’s riches. Flamingo meat is still eaten by some in the 21st century. Some markets in China and Thailand openly sell flamingo meat. People in Venezuela also hunt and eat it due to the food crisis. Some inhabitants in the Caribbean also hunt and eat flamingos. [2] 8 Chewy Milk A History of Irish Food with Tadgh Byrne: Episode 2: Early Medieval Ireland (600BC-1500AD): Dairy In ancient Ireland, milk was a delicacy of its own. But this was a different form of what we think of milk today; it was yellow bubbling milk and needed to be chewed slowly—like a soft cheese. Sometimes, you would require a shorter amount of time to chew meat than chew this milk. Although the Irish love potatoes, the tuber crop did not make its way into Ireland till the late 1600s. Milk dominated the diet of the Irish in the interim. There was drinking milk, buttermilk, fresh curds, and old curds. There was also something called “real curds.” It was in this era of milk dominance that “chewy” milk was born. In 1690, one visitor observed that the Irish drank and ate milk in about twenty different ways. After several centuries of drinking and chewing milk, these milk options are still consumed in Ireland today. The difference is that they are now made with modern technology and more hygienic methods. Credits to https://listverse.com/ Popular superstitions, urban legends, and myths die hard. Once a few thousand (or a few million, really) people start to believe something, it never quite seems to go away. Of course, many of these commonly-known myths are flat-out false. Take, for example, the threat of rain on your wedding day—to reference a famous song. Just because the clouds open up doesn’t mean you’re guaranteed to divorce! The two have nothing in common! Yet people still tread carefully around all kinds of myths and legends. With historical, cultural, and lifestyle stuff, that’s at least partially understandable. Mythmaking is a thing that every culture does, right? But other things are very easily disproved by scientific fact. In those cases, it’s especially frustrating to see baseless myths persist. And that’s what we’re covering today. In this list, we’ll take a look at ten scientific “facts” that are completely phony. Sadly, these ten items simply won’t die out, regardless of how many times they are corrected on the record. Ah, well. At least we’re doing our part here, right? It’s often recommended as a safer, lighter alternative to regular workouts. However, there is no evidence supporting the idea that yoga is easier on the body. In fact, one study discovered that yoga can lead to injuries at the same rate as sports-related injuries. Astonishingly, around 21% of the injuries in the study were actually worsened by practicing yoga. That rendered the supposedly low-impact practice just as intense as other popular exercise methods. Clearly, it challenges the notion that yoga is a low-impact activity with minimal risk. Yet the belief that yoga is a gentle and harmless exercise option has persisted. People suffering from joint issues and other wear-and-tear problems turn to the mindful exercise regimen to escape further pain. Like everything, it’s best to do it with a professional around. A yogi ought to be able to tell you what exercises can help you and what will only make things worse. But the fact that some athletes find their injuries actually get worse after yoga certainly goes against the grain of what is supposedly “common knowledge.” It just goes to show that every exercise action has consequences for the human body. She insisted it would cause arthritis. But over the years, the boy never seemed to be affected by cracking his knuckles. And as an adult, Unger came up with a different plan. With unwavering determination and scientific curiosity, he conducted a personal experiment: he cracked the knuckles on his left hand twice daily and left his right hand untouched. His mission? To uncover the truth. For a remarkable 60 years, Unger persisted. Then, in 2009, he was honored with the Ig Nobel Prize. His groundbreaking research shattered the myth that knuckle cracking leads to arthritis. His left hand was fine—and so was his right. Subsequent studies have further supported his findings too! Now, experts still caution against the practice. They note that while it may not directly cause arthritis, knuckle cracking can potentially result in diminished grip strength and swelling. But Donald Unger’s personal journey is proof positive that the belief that knuckle cracking leads to arthritis is a myth. His six-decade experiment not only earned him recognition but also totally proved the fallacy wrong. Take that, Mom! [2] 8 Sports Drinks Aren’t Healthy Are Sports Drinks Safe and Effective? Credits to https://listverse.com/ There have been plenty of monarchs throughout history, most of whom died young due to disease, insurrection, or other causes. However, some monarchs went on to live extremely long lives—and to continue ruling their kingdoms to boot. Here are ten of the oldest monarchs who remained on the throne despite their age. Related: 10 Unlikely People Who Became Monarchs 10 Pepi II Ancient Egypt – Pharaoh Pepi II Pepi II was the fifth pharaoh of the 6th Dynasty of Egypt, ruling from around the year 2325 BC. When Pepi II was named pharaoh, he was actually just four years old. Because of how far back Pepi II’s reign dates, little is known about his time as king. What we do know is that he presided over the end of the Old Kingdom, the time period when the Great Pyramids of Giza were built. In fact, at the end of Pepi II’s reign, the Old Kingdom finally collapsed, bringing in the chaotic First Intermediate Period. Despite knowing little about what Pepi II did during his reign, we do know that he ruled Egypt for a lengthy period of time. Pepi II remained in power for 94 years, only giving up the throne when he died at the whopping age of 98. [1] 9 Min Hti, King of Arakan One of the longest reigning monarchs, and oldest at the time of his death, is actually a monarch that we know little about. The king in question is a man named Min Hti, who was King of Arakan, or modern-day Myanmar, from roughly 1279 until around 1374. Min Hti was born sometime in the early 1270s, which would have made him around ten years old when he ascended to the throne. The king’s reign was largely characterized by wars and military conquests. His kingdom was eventually succeeded by his son, although not before it fell into a bit of turmoil. Although the exact length of his reign is disputed, it’s estimated that Min Hti ruled for around 95 years. That would have made him somewhere between 98 and 100 years old at the time of his death. [2] 8 Elizabeth II The Spectacular Reign Of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II A Lifetime Of Service Real Royalty Elizabeth II is one of the most recent monarchs to pass away and was the Queen of the United Kingdom from 1952 until 2022. Elizabeth was born on April 21, 1926, and was the daughter of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon and Prince Albert. Interestingly enough, Elizabeth wasn’t actually in line for the throne until her uncle abdicated, leaving her father as the king and Elizabeth as the heir apparent. When Elizabeth’s father died in 1952, he left her as the new Queen. Elizabeth’s reign was marked largely by her efforts to modernize the monarchy and create a royal family that was more relevant to popular culture. Elizabeth went on to reign for a total of 70 years, dying at the age of 96. That makes her one of the oldest monarchs to have ruled, despite her age! [3] 7 Ramesses II The Greatest Pharaoh Ramesses II Ancient Egypt Documentary Another famous Egyptian king who ruled well into his later years was Ramesses II. Ramesses II was the third king of the 19th Dynasty in Egypt and took the throne in 1279 BC. Like many other monarchs, Ramesses II was ushered into the monarchy at an early age. At just thirteen years old, Ramesses II found himself in charge of ruling a country that had gone into decline thanks to his predecessors, Akhenaten and Tutankhamun. Still, that didn’t stop Ramesses. He went on to lead Egypt into a time of prosperity, building several great temples that still exist today. Besides building temples, he also spent the first part of his reign conducting military exploits and improving relations with neighboring nations. All this led the Egyptians to give him the nickname of Ramesses the Great, thanks to the good he did for Egypt. Although we can’t be sure of his age at the time of his death, historians estimate that Ramesses II was around 90 years old when he breathed his last. That makes him one of the oldest monarchs to have ever lived! [4] 6 Chan Imix Kʼawiil Quest For The 1,500 Year Old Mayan City of Copán Fall Of The Maya Chronicle...

Yet one that isn’t discussed much is Gilles de Rais, which may be due to both the controversial nature of his alleged actions and the argument between two opposing factions over his guilt or innocence for them. So settle in as we scrutinize Gilles de Rais’ case from his childhood to his execution and let you decide—was he guilty or innocent of being one of the world’s first psychotic super serial killers? Related: Top 10 American Serial Killers Who Predated The 20th Century 10 Gilles de Rais’s Family Culture Gilles de Rais was born in the family castle at Champtocé-sur-Loire, to parents Guy II de Montmorency-Laval and Marie de Craon in 1404. Gilles was an intelligent child, fluent in Latin, and divided his attentions between military discipline and intellectual and moral advancement by consuming manuscripts. After his parents both passed away in 1415 (his father in a hunting accident), he and his brother René de La Suze were sent to their mother’s grandfather, Jean de Craon, for tutoring. It turned out that Jean de Craon was a major schemer who quickly tried to get the twelve-year-old Gilles married off to a four-year-old girl named Jeanne Paynel—whose mother “just happened” to be one of the wealthiest heiresses in France. Despite his first plan being doomed to fail, which it did, he tried the same ploy again, this time failing to target the Duke of Brittany’s niece for his grandson’s bride no less. Being quite the tenacious scheme artist that he was, Craon tried again for a third time. As they say, the third time’s the charm because, on November 30, 1420, he succeeded in marrying young Gilles off to Catherine de Thouars of Brittany, who “just happened” to be the heiress of La Vendée and Poitou. [1] 9 The Ultimate French Childhood Did Medieval Childhood Exist? In 15th-century France, the ultimate childhood began by being born into a fabled existence to incredibly wealthy parents with much, much wealthier and well-connected families. Such is the case with Gilles de Rais. His mother, the former Marie Craon, had married his father, Guy de Rais, who, at the time, was the heir to the exceedingly rich Jeanne la Sage. Though this purely strategically planned marriage was engineered exclusively to merge three powerful and wealthy families. Guy and Marie did not get married until Guy changed his name from Laval to de Rais strictly for the purpose of inheriting the estate of Jeanne la Sage, who was the last heiress of the de Rais family. However, la Sage reneged on the promise to make Guy her heir and instead gave her inheritance to Catherine de Machecoul, the mother of Jean Craon, Marie’s father. To prevent a major feud between Guy, the la Sages, and the Machecouls, the ever-so-astute Jean Craon proposed a marriage between Guy and Marie. It was done, and the de Raises inherited la Sage’s holdings. Gilles would lose both parents in 1415, but his life afterward was rather non-eventful, but being the son and heir of a distinguished and rich nobleman had its perks. While as young as seven, as a distinguished child, he was treated as a young adult as all children of his class were. Gilles didn’t see his parents much but was an excellent student by all accounts, excelling in subjects such as the humanities and classic art, along with training in courtly ways and the military arts. Although some cafeteria staff called the change “completely ludicrous,” it was enacted by two lawmakers as a symbolic gesture to express their disapproval at France’s decision not to support the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Private restaurants around the United States reportedly did the same, although the name did not stick, and U.S. relations with France eventually thawed. Another town to change its name during World War I was Germantown. Historians reported the town was forced to change after a train carrying troops was stopped there. After spotting the signboard with the town’s name, soldiers became enraged and badly damaged the station. [2] 8 The Royal Surname Why did the British Royal Family change its name to Windsor? (Short Animated Documentary) In a time long before modern public relations advisers could be consulted, Britain’s King George V made a shrewd call that not only preserved his place on the throne but also ensured a place for the royal family in Britain’s future. In 1917, after three brutal years of fighting against Germany, anti-German sentiment abounded in the UK. The problem was that the royals had German ancestry and relations. The king’s cousin was the kaiser of Germany, and his wife was German. The dynasty to which the family belonged was Saxe-Coburg-Gotha which, often used in place of a surname, was a dead giveaway of their German roots. The king saw problems—and perhaps even a revolution—on the horizon if he did not act. So he created a family surname, choosing the more British-sounding “Windsor” for himself and his descendants. [3] 7 Dog Breeds History Of The GERMAN SHEPHERD Another name that changed in 1917, although it officially reverted back in 1977, was that of the German shepherd dog. The dogs were widely used by both sides during the two world wars, but with Germany as the enemy, it did not sit right with some people that the dogs should be called German shepherds. In response, the name was changed, although it took a few different forms. The American Kennel Club dropped “German” from the name in 1917, while the British went for an entire rebrand. They chose t...

Credits to https://listverse.com/ Some classic TV sitcoms have become so popular viewers didn’t want them to end. It can be a struggle to keep a show fresh and find ways for the characters to continue growing. As a result, a series cast, characters, or premise might be so altered it seems like a different show by the time it ends. While many of these programs improved over time, others have been criticized for compromising the things that made them unique and appealing in the first place. From M*A*S*H to The Big Bang Theory, these are 10 classic sitcoms that changed so much over the years they became almost unrecognizable. Related: 10 Far-Out Theories About Beloved Sitcoms 10 Happy Days Richie Fonzie (Season 11) – Part 1 When the classic sitcom Happy Days premiered in 1974, the show starred Ron Howard as Richie Cunningham, a wholesome, likable, but somewhat awkward teen growing up during the 1950s in an ideal American family. In the first season, an acquaintance of Richie, auto-mechanic and sexy young biker Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli, was just a small recurring character. During what would turn out to be the series’ 11-season run, the popularity of Fonzie, played by Henry Winkler, skyrocketed, and it didn’t take long before he moved into an apartment above the Cunningham’s garage and became part of the family. For a while, it was unclear exactly who was the lead: the clean-cut former child actor Ron Howard or iconic heartthrob Henry Winkler. As his feature film-directing career took off in the early 1980s, Howard was absent from the show for a couple of years, making Winkler the undisputed star. Other major changes included the addition of new characters like Fonzie’s cousin Chachi (Scott Baio), who later married Richie’s sister Joanie. Viewers also saw the womanizing Fonzie involved in serious relationships and adopting a child. [1] 9 Family Matters Steve Urkel becomes Stefan Urquelle! Family Matters Warner Archive Another example of a minor character developing a huge following and subsequently dominating a show is the rise of nerdy genius Steve Urkel on Family Matters. A spin-off of Perfect Strangers, the upbeat sitcom Family Matters, set in Chicago, premiered in 1989 and revolved around the Winslows, a middle-class African-American family headed by dad, Carl (Reginald VelJohnson), and quick-witted mom, Harriet (Jo Marie Payton). The couple and their three children—Eddie, Laura, and Judy—shared their home with Carl’s mother, Estelle, along with Harriet’s widowed sister, Rachel, and her son. The Winslow’s hilariously bumbling teenage neighbor, Steve Urkel, played by Jaleel White, was so popular he became the star of the show. His wild scientific experiments added a fantasy element to the storylines, especially when he created an alter ego, the cool and suave Stefan, and later cloned himself. By the end of the series in 1998, Urkel had finally won the heart of Laura Winslow (Kellie Shanygne Williams). [2] 8 The Big Bang Theory Why are we still single??? – The Big Bang Theory When The Big Bang Theory premiered in 2007, it revolved around four brilliant but nerdy guys who were hopelessly awkward with women. But the characters made enormous progress during the show’s 12 seasons. Penny (Kaley Cuoco), the beautiful waitress and aspiring actress, shook things up for two physicists sharing an apartment, Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Sheldon (Jim Parsons), when she moved in across the hall. Penny and Leonard’s off-and-on romance eventually led to marriage in season nine. While this outcome was fairly predictable, it was not nearly as obvious that the other guys would find their soul mates. The brilliant but socially inept Sheldon, who seemed completely uninterested in love, reluctantly began a relationship with neurobiologist Amy, played by Mayim Bialik, whom he married in the eleventh season finale. While aerospace engineer Howard (Simon Helberg) was the most outgoing, his sleazy pickup lines and abrasive personality didn’t help his chances with women. Still, he did m...

Credits to https://listverse.com/ Where is Cleopatra’s tomb? Who made the devil’s footprints? What happened to Abigail Williams? If you don’t know about any of those queries yet, you are sure to after this surprising list of history’s most persistent mysteries. Historians spend their careers studying life’s most important questions. Yes, there are plenty of major historical events that have been endlessly documented. (Both World Wars and the American Civil War come to mind, among many others.) But many more events throughout history are far less understood than we may think. And it’s not just ancient happenings, either. Some relatively recent mysteries from the last century still persist in the minds of historical investigators, readers, and amateur sleuths, too. In this list, we’ll dive into ten of the most pressing historical questions that experts still haven’t been able to answer. No matter how much these ten items are studied, nobody can come away with a conclusive take. And as time keeps on passing us by, every day brings more certainty that the truth will probably never quite be known. Related: Top 10 Of The Creepiest Disappearances Throughout History 10 What Fate Befell Abigail? The Hidden Truth Behind The Salem Witch Trials The Salem witch trials were a notorious chapter in colonial America. And even today, they remain shrouded in mystery—especially when it comes to the fate of Abigail Williams. In 1689, Samuel Parris arrived in Salem, Massachusetts, as a new minister. He was accompanied there by his daughter Betty and her cousin Abigail. For a while, life was normal. But then strange occurrences plagued the girls in early 1692. They were found to be suffering from convulsions and speaking in tongues. That led the town doctor to conclude they were bewitched. Blaming the family slave, Tituba, the girls accused her of sending them into a life of witchcraft. She confessed and then quickly implicated two more women. The madness escalated as more girls exhibited similar symptoms. Soon, even more individuals faced witchcraft accusations. Samuel Parris lost his job and left with Betty, who went on to lead a normal life. Meanwhile, Abigail Williams stayed behind. She began to play a significant role in the town by accusing 57 more people of witchcraft. However, after testifying in June 1692, Abigail vanished from historical records. Nobody ever heard from her again. Today, experts suggest she may have acted out due to her powerless position in society and sought temporary control for attention or influence. Others theorize the symptoms displayed by Abigail and the other “afflicted girls” were caused by ergotism. That’s a condition that comes from consuming fungus-infected rye. Historians wonder whether that could have led to her untimely demise and, thus, her subsequent disappearance from historical accounts. But nobody knows for sure. As far as the records are concerned, she simply vanished! [1] 9 Who’s Buried There? The Mysterious, Enormous and Incredible Mozu Tombs of Ancient Japan Ancient Architects Japan is home to ancient tombs called kofun. These tombs were all built from the 3rd to 7th centuries AD. Unlike the famous pyramids, these tombs have a unique keyhole design and vary in size. Some are just a few dozen feet long. Others stretch for thousands of feet. The largest kofun, known as Daisen Kofun, is located in Sakai, Osaka Prefecture. It measures over 1,500 feet (457 meters) in length and 1,000 feet (305 meters) in width. However, the identity of the person buried inside remains a mystery. Traditionally, Emperor Nintoku, the 16th Emperor of Japan during the 4th century, has been associated with this tomb. Despite this belief, no academic or scientist has confirmed it. That’s because there have always been very strict regulations prohibiting entry into the tomb. The Imperial Household Agency, responsible for matters concerning the Imperial Family, has restricted archaeological research to the kofun’s surrounding moats since the 1970s. However, there has be...

Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use. Credits to https://listverse.com/ The Fermi Paradox is one of the most puzzling problems about living in our universe. Based on our current understanding of biology and physics, we should see alien civilizations or signs of their existence across the night sky. Yet as far as we can tell, we are alone in the cosmos. Why is this? One reason that we are not finding alien life is that we are not looking in the right places. Since Earth lifeforms are the only ones we know of, scientists have tended to look for life like ours. Perhaps Earth is unusual, and life flourishes in far stranger places than we ever imagined. Here are ten places that have been suggested as homes for alien organisms. Related: Top 10 Ways Aliens Have Appeared Through The Ages 10 Venus Life on Venus National Geographic Venus is quiet like Earth, or at least Earth if it was sent to hell. Both planets are similar in size and mass, and the surface’s gravity is comparable. Surely this makes it an obvious place to look for life. When astronomers in the early 20th century peered at Venus through their telescopes, all they could see were dense clouds reflecting sunlight. This led some to picture the surface as a tropical and humid swamp teeming with lifeforms. Unfortunately, when space probes explored the planet, they found its surface temperature was hot enough to melt lead, and its toxic atmosphere had a pressure nearly 100 times that on Earth. Not really somewhere to expect life, then. Except there are parts of the planet that may just harbors organisms. There are places higher in the atmosphere where the pressure is not too great, the temperature is cool enough for liquid water, and there might be less of the ubiquitous sulfuric acid. Single-celled organisms might be able to exist there, caught in the high winds. One theory is that these organisms could live their lives in two stages. When in the right place, they are active and alive, but if they start falling toward the surface as a droplet forms around them, they go into a tough hibernation state that can survive at lower levels. As they dry out on their descent, they become lighter and are carried back into the habitable zone, where they can become active again. A recent observation by the ALMA observatory suggested there were high levels of phosphine in the atmosphere of Venus. On Earth, only life is known to form phosphine, so it was suggested it might be coming from Venusian life. Unfortunately, it seems that this detection was mistaken. If life exists on Venus, we’ll have to look harder. [1] 9 Under Ice Why Aliens Might Love Their Frozen Home One of the reasons astronomers search Earth-like planets in certain orbits around stars is that there is one indisputable fact about life on Earth—it needs liquid water to survive. Too close to a star, and all the water boils. Too far, and it all turns to ice. At least, that was what astronomers thought. Some places outside the habitable zone of our own sun might be concealing vast oceans. The icy moons of Jupiter, like Ganymede, Europa, and Callisto, are covered with layers of water ice but underneath may be deep reservoirs of water where life could evolve. Europa is only a quarter the diameter of Earth but could have more than four times all the water found in Earth’s oceans under its icy outer crust. It is thought that the massive pressures exerted by Jupiter’s gravity provide the energy to keep this ocean in its liquid form. We know that life can exist in the deepest and darkest parts of Earth’s seas, and so it is just possible that life found a way to survive on these icy moons. Multiple space probes have been and will be launched toward Jupiter to get a better look at its moons and see if life can be detected. [2] 8 Comets Possible signs of alien life on comet Comets can be some of the most spectacular sights in our sky. As they plunge from the outer solar system toward the sun, they warm up and blast huge plumes that form illuminated tails behind the comet. Because they have a large amount of water ice, they may have b...

Credits to https://listverse.com/ Some movies are unforgettable cinematic masterpieces that inspire and deeply touch us. However, some movies receive an excessive amount of hype and attention. It’s difficult to determine what makes a movie overrated: Is it due to excessive promotion, failure to deliver, or a disconnect between critics and the audience? Join me as I explore the top ten most overrated movies in history. Related: Top 10 Underrated Film Scores By Famous Composers 10 Jaws (1975) Jaws “You’re Going To Need a Bigger Boat” Shark Attacks Chief Brody in 4K HDR I must say that Jaws is a classic often hailed as one of the greatest films ever. However, I wonder if it’s really all it’s cracked up to be. Don’t get me wrong; Jaws is a very well-made movie. The tension and suspense are masterfully built throughout the film, and the shark is an iconic villain that has become a pop culture phenomenon. However, when you look at the actual story and characters, some flaws prevent it from truly being a masterpiece. The characters are one dimensional. While Roy Scheider’s Chief Brody is a relatable protagonist, the other characters are mostly just caricatures. Richard Dreyfuss’s Hooper is the nerdy scientist, and Robert Shaw’s Quint is the gruff old sea captain. They don’t really have much depth beyond these basic archetypes. The film’s pacing can be slow at times. While the build-up to the shark attacks is expertly handled, there are stretches of the film where not much happens. This can make the movie feel dragged out. I think Jaws is a good movie, but I don’t think it’s quite as great as some people make it out to be. It’s definitely worth a watch, but don’t expect a flawless masterpiece. 9 The Shining (1980) The Shining Jack Nicholson BEST SCENE I’ve heard endless praises for Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. However, I cannot help but feel that it may be a tad overrated. The plot of the movie is quite straightforward. A family moves into a hotel, and the father goes crazy and tries to kill his family. The movie’s premise is not particularly innovative or complex. In fact, the story has been used in countless horror movies. The film is almost two and a half hours long, which doesn’t help its general slow pace. The slow pacing may be intentional, but it also makes the movie tedious. Jack Nicholson’s performance as Jack Torrance is over the top and cartoonish, but most of the other actor’s performances fall flat. While The Shining may have been groundbreaking when it was first released, it may not hold up to today’s standards. While it is a classic, it’s not the masterpiece that many people make it out to be. 8 Forrest Gump (1994) Forrest Gump runs across America for 1170 days and 16 hours This is the one that is sure to ruffle classic movie lovers’ feathers—Forrest Gump is also overrated. Don’t get me wrong; I appreciate the film’s attempted themes of perseverance, love, and friendship, but it doesn’t live up to all the hype for several reasons. The plot is disjointed and unrealistic. Gump is always in the right place at the right time. It’s hard to believe that one person could be present (mostly unintentionally) at all the major historical events in the movie while also becoming ridiculously wealthy. But this luck seems to affect everything—but his love life, of course—and the implied reason the film often uses is Gump’s simple mind and low IQ. It feels like a forced way to elicit sympathy while selling a false sense of conflict. All this leads to the biggest criticism of Forrest Gump: the film’s sentimentality. The “love story” is over the top and manipulative. Jenny was nice to him when he was a kid, so he turned himself into her loyal pet to be neglected and emotionally abused unless she needed something. Honestly, I get what they wanted to do, but it just doesn’t live up to the hype. 7 The Blair Witch Project (1999) The Blair Witch Project (1999) Trailer #1 Movieclips Classic Trailers This isn’t really a surprise: The Blair Witch Project is overrated. It tried to be innovative and gr...
