This it achieves with some very impressive special effects for it's time; Dr. Frankenstein seeing the monster in his own reflection. Thought to be a lost film, it's existence was confirmed in 1963 after it was found listed, along with stills and a synopsis, in a copy of The Edison Kinetogram, a print was found in the mid-1970s by Alois F. Dettlaff, a Wisconsin film collector. The monster looks very different than how it always seems to appear in later films, thanks to Boris Karloff's 1931 performance in Universal's Frankenstein. The novel is very sketchy on the monster''s appearance however, so it is interesting to see a less common depiction./media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="19" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="688"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:i3FvpsUr3U8/id> yt:videoId>i3FvpsUr3U8/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UCHuG1lSWjlTbeGJpfQgFWfg/yt:channelId> title>A is for Atom (1953)/title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3FvpsUr3U8"/> author> name>SCI FI TV/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHuG1lSWjlTbeGJpfQgFWfg/uri> /author> published>2022-04-08T11:21:27+00:00/published> updated>2024-05-08T21:25:13+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>A is for Atom (1953)/media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/i3FvpsUr3U8?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i2.ytimg.com/vi/i3FvpsUr3U8/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>John Sutherland's promotional film A is for Atom is a 1953 animated documentary that explains in an inadvertently patronising way what atoms and isotopes are, and what nuclear fission and artificial transmutation is amongst other things. If you're looking to be educated in nuclear physics however it's too dated and simplistic for today. It triumphantly, and at times pompously, reveals how the Atomic Age (the time period following the 1945 nuclear bombing of Japan to today) will allow mankind to do lots of amazing things by harnessing this new power. It doesn't bother to credit any scientists except Albert Einstein and touches over the Manhattan Project without going into the details, but it's fascinating to see the 1950s take on the coming Atomic Age until the 1986 Chernobyl Disaster changed everything. I particularly enjoyed the future possibilities of nuclear-powered submarines, ships and aeroplanes...well two out of three isn't bad. - Johnny 'SALF' Kirk/media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="15" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="491"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:GeBr5VtIeu0/id> yt:videoId>GeBr5VtIeu0/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UCHuG1lSWjlTbeGJpfQgFWfg/yt:channelId> title>The Alligator People (1959) - Sci-fi/title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GeBr5VtIeu0"/> author> name>SCI FI TV/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHuG1lSWjlTbeGJpfQgFWfg/uri> /author> published>2022-04-08T07:31:22+00:00/published> updated>2024-05-08T09:40:58+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>The Alligator People (1959) - Sci-fi/media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/GeBr5VtIeu0?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i4.ytimg.com/vi/GeBr5VtIeu0/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>"He's an Alligator man! It features a green winged devil lighting a fire under a large pot, before conjuring forth an angelic woman. Through the use of interpretive dance and costume, the woman splays her wings before lighting on fire and disappearing in a puff of smoke. Note: This film is often cited as being an adaptation of the book She: A History of Adventure (1887) by H. Rider Haggard. However, it appears to have very little to do with the book and it is possible this association only stems from the book featuring a prominent scene of a pillar of fire. If it is indeed connected, the film is more inspired by, rather than adapted from the book. - Amy 'TheTsundereGirl' Kirk/media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="24" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="1536"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:_i6RN07u2B0/id> yt:videoId>_i6RN07u2B0/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UCHuG1lSWjlTbeGJpfQgFWfg/yt:channelId> title>LOST FILM FRAGMENT of The Queen of Sheba (1921)/title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_i6RN07u2B0"/> author> name>SCI FI TV/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHuG1lSWjlTbeGJpfQgFWfg/uri> /author> published>2022-04-08T07:30:27+00:00/published> updated>2024-05-08T16:00:25+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>LOST FILM FRAGMENT of The Queen of Sheba (1921)/media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/_i6RN07u2B0?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i4.ytimg.com/vi/_i6RN07u2B0/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>Presented with great pride are all surviving 17 seconds of the 9 reel 1921 epic "The Queen of Sheba". Tragically, the original film was lost along with most other Fox silent film prints in the 1937 Fox vault fire in New Jersey. We don't really know what the specifics of the plot of this film was, but we know it was a story of the romance between King Solomon (Fritz Leiber) and the Queen of Sheba (Betty Blythe). Nonetheless, this short glimpse allows us to see classic over-the-top acting common to silent films, as well as the pretty great costumes worn; some of Blythe's costumes considered risqué at the time. -Johnny "SALF" Kirk/media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="26" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="1581"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:hw74EOXEcxA/id> yt:videoId>hw74EOXEcxA/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UCHuG1lSWjlTbeGJpfQgFWfg/yt:channelId> title>Reefer Madness [AKA Tell Your Children] (1936)/title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hw74EOXEcxA"/> author> name>SCI FI TV/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHuG1lSWjlTbeGJpfQgFWfg/uri> /author> published>2022-04-08T07:29:42+00:00/published> updated>2024-05-09T16:32:59+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>Reefer Madness [AKA Tell Your Children] (1936)/media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/hw74EOXEcxA?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i1.ytimg.com/vi/hw74EOXEcxA/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>Don't smoke marijuana, or else they'll be manslaughter, suicide, rape and insanity! You see, in the early days of cinema, most films were shorts of everyday life and occurrences; the train pulling into the station, that would send the audience hurrying out of their seats in shock. Georges Méliès, a French illusionist and performer decided somewhere along the lines that this wasn't interesting enough and started to make films that actually told a story and narrative. His theatre background influenced how he presented these films and is the reason why this and many of his other five hundred some films (over half of which are sadly lost) appeared like filmed stage performances. For all of you Science Fiction fans out there, you have this film to thank for the development of the genre, as film historians often cite is as the first example. Oh, and the style and themes may look familiar to a few of you because it inspired the music video for the Smashing Pumpkins song 'Tonight, Tonight'. The plot follows five brave astronomers, the leader of the group being played by Méliès himself, who decide to take a trip to the moon. After being shot out of a cannon in a bullet shaped capsule the group successfully land. At this point we can see the famous and iconic scene of the capsule hitting the man in the moon in the eye. After getting some rest the group is attacked by Selenites, the alien inhabitants of the moon. Not to worry though, as they explode in a cloud of smoke when hit; accomplished by a revolutionary at the time, technique called a substitution splice, or what is now known as a jump cut. After having had enough of the hostile reception, the astronomers run back to the capsule to get back to earth. A Selenite stows away with them as they crash into the real life ocean, accomplished through the use of multiple exposure and superimposition. The last scene (which was for a long time cut out of most copies of the film, meaning it was lost for many years) features the capsule being towed back to land, a celebratory parade, the captive Selenite on display and the unveiling of a statue commemorating the event. - Amy 'TheTsundereGirl' Kirk/media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="11" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="214"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> /feed>

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 08.04.2022 · 22:00:09 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· The second of three propaganda animated shorts created by Warner Bros. Animation in the 50s, this one is to encourage former U.S. Army personnel to re-enlist. Ralph Phillips is overjoyed at the prospect of becoming a civilian again, but soon gets bored and re-enlists when two pixies convince him to do so. The art style in this short is fast, vibrant and excellent to view, and Daws Butler and Mel Blanc's unforgettable voices are great. - Johnny 'SALF' Kirk

··· ··· ··· ··· The Invisible Strangler gives you exactly what you'd expect from the title; Roger Sands uses his psychic powers to strangle young ladies who remind him of his mother. Surprisingly this is actually a pretty solid slasher movie that focuses more on the detectives trying to stop Sands, giving a great crime thriller atmosphere. The special effects are great for the time and the ending is satisfying. - Johnny "SALF" Kirk

10:: Frankenstein (1910)

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 08.04.2022 · 11:23:07 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· The earliest surviving film based on Mary Shelley's 1818 novel Frankenstein, this silent liberal adaptation de-emphasises the horrific aspects of the book and instead focuses on the novel's more psychological nature. The novel is very sketchy on the monster''s appearance however, so it is interesting to see a less common depiction.

11:: A is for Atom (1953)

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 08.04.2022 · 11:21:27 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· John Sutherland's promotional film A is for Atom is a 1953 animated documentary that explains in an inadvertently patronising way what atoms and isotopes are, and what nuclear fission and artificial transmutation is amongst other things. - Johnny 'SALF' Kirk

12:: The Alligator People (1959) - Sci-fi

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 08.04.2022 · 07:31:22 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· "He's an Alligator man! Ain't noone understand him, but the swamp can!" I made that up, but actually this b-movie gem is surprisingly good! Great performances from Beverly Garland and Lon Chaney Jr... and everyone really (except George Macready, who I think was actually drunk), makes an audience invested in a ridiculous plot, but so well presented ones disbelief is firmly suspended... until the end unfortunately. Worthy of note is that our main character is a lady, and a brave protagonist, so well done 1960's for that one... except the attempted rape scene... gah...

13:: La danse du feu [The Pillar of Fire] (1899)

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 08.04.2022 · 07:30:57 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· An amazing example of the pre-colour motion picture process, hand colourisation (where someone would have to paint over each frame by hand) Danse du feu is the work of pioneer film-maker and special effects innovator Georges Méliès. - Amy 'TheTsundereGirl' Kirk

14:: LOST FILM FRAGMENT of The Queen of Sheba (1921)

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 08.04.2022 · 07:30:27 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Presented with great pride are all surviving 17 seconds of the 9 reel 1921 epic "The Queen of Sheba". -Johnny "SALF" Kirk

15:: Reefer Madness [AKA Tell Your Children] (1936)

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 08.04.2022 · 07:29:42 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Don't smoke marijuana, or else they'll be manslaughter, suicide, rape and insanity! Well, that was the message of the first cut of the film! Dammit, 1930's... To audiences today, this film is hilariously exaggerated, but back in1938 or 1939 (we don't actually know), exploitation film maker Dwain Esper thought so too and re-cut the film to create this exploitation gem you see before you now! So unintentionally campy and dreadful, it became a hit in the 70's as an argument for legalising cannabis in the US, and has remained a cult classic ever since! So please enjoy, but don't forget... it could be YOUR children that suffer the menace of one of the most harmless drugs... YOURS!

16:: Le voyage dans la lune [A Trip to the Moon] (1902) - Public Domain Silent Sci-Fi

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 08.04.2022 · 07:28:52 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· I can say without a trace of irony, or shadow of a doubt, that this is one of, if not the most influential film in cinema history. - Amy 'TheTsundereGirl' Kirk

17:: The Amazing Quest of Ernest Bliss [The Amazing Adventure] (1936)

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 08.04.2022 · 07:28:27 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Alfred Zeisler's 1936 The Amazing Quest of Ernest Bliss, A.K.A. The Amazing Adventure, is a heart-warming British romantic comedy; unlike many rom-coms however this one is genuinely heartwarming and genuinely romantic; featuring great performances from Cary Grant as Ernest Bliss and Mary Brian as Francis Clayton. Ernest Bliss is a millionaire entrepreneur who makes a bet with his doctor Lord Honiton (Henry Kendall) that he can live for a whole year without accessing any of the money he has inherited or gets from his companies, as he feels stuck in a rut. In the Great Depression (the mid 1930s to mid 1940s), this just isn't easy to do. Starvation looms, but by stepping from selling stoves to driving a cab Ernest manages to find happiness, an understanding of people's plights and marriage for love, not shiny things. Ernest's and Francis's relationship is pleasantly well-developed and feels real; she doesn't even like him at the beginning. Also you get a tiny taste of the suckfest that was the global Great Depression and I can definitely see this giving poor people a much needed morale-boost (you know, if they can afford to even go the theatre to SEE it) and maybe it was intended to inspire rich people to be more generous and understanding to the poor. So, if you're in the mood for something to cheer you up and make you feel amiable toward the world, this is a great movie for that very purpose. - Johnny 'SALF' Kirk
