Daniella lives with her husband and daughter in Maryland, and holds a Master’s degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from the Harvard Extension School. Daniella is an organizational development speaker with the Macmillan Speaker’s Bureau
In the vein of Educated and The Glass Castle, Daniella Mestyanek Young's Uncultured is more than a memoir about an exceptional upbringing, but about a woman who, no matter the lack of tools given to her, is determined to overcome. Uncultured is "a propulsive memoir delivered in the honest tones of a woman who didn't always think she'd live to tell her story,” (NYT) it’s a book which explores the dangers unleashed when harmful group mentality goes unrecognized, demonstrates the “dangers of blindly following leaders of any stripe” (Kirkus Review) and is emblematic of the many ways women have to contort themselves to survive.

My guest today is author and cult survivor Richard A. Kiers. Richard was born in Canada to Dutch parents. When he was 10, Richard’s parents joined a Group called "The Move" and relocated their family to a commune in British Columbia in 1972.
It turned out that The Move was a cult, led by Sam Fife, which at one time had over 40,000 members. Richard wrote a book about his cult experiences called Swindled by Faith: A Time for Reconciliation. He also has a private FB group for cult survivors, called Silent Voices, and he is working on a podcast by the same name.
In Richard’s own words: I lived there for only a few short years when I realized I had to leave or die. I have spent the rest of my life learning to be me.

Phil founded the first Secular Studies department in the United States in 2011. Secular Studies is an interdisciplinary program focusing on manifestations of the secular in societies and cultures, past and present.
Today Phil shares his own experiences with secularism. We also discuss differences between American, French, and Scandinavian concepts of secular and religious life, and what it means to be a moral person.
