1:: Rapper Bad Bunny name drops Rays' Randy Arozarena in new song

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 13.10.2023 · 19:47:18 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Add getting name dropped by world-famous rapper/singer Bad Bunny to Randy Arozarena’s list of accomplishments this season. The Rays outfielder is mentioned in Bad Bunny’s latest song, Nadie Sabe, which was released at midnight Thursday as the first track from a new album. Bad Bunny sings, “Yo mismo me impresiono, como Randy Arozarena,” which translates to “I impress myself like Randy Arozarena.”Rays outfielder Randy Arozarena took to Instagram to thank rapper Bad Bunny for mentioning him in his latest song. [ Instagram ]Word spread quickly to Arozarena of the mention, as he posted his thanks on Instagram:“Gracias Gracias Gracias Gracias x 1000000=5 milliones de Gracias.”Arozarena also posted an Instagram story about being included in the song. Arozarena gained considerable popularity and notoriety after his dominant and entertaining performance for Team Mexico in the spring World Baseball Classic, with his arms crossed gesture becoming something of a world-wide phenomenon, spreading to all levels of baseball and even to other sports. The Rays this season also launched a popular Randy Land seating section for fans during Friday home games. Arozarena, 28, has established himself as a dynamic player over the last three years, and is the first player in major-league history to have a 20-homer, 20-steal season as a rookie and in his next two seasons. He was voted an All-Star for the first time this season, and he had a memorable performance in the Home Run Derby as well. Bad Bunny, whose given name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, is a native Puerto Rican who is considered one of the leaders in getting Spanish-language music to achieve mainstream popularity, with a reggaeton and Latin trap style. He has been the most streamed artist on the Spotify platform the past three years, reaching a record 18.3 billion in 2022. He is the first non-English artist to rank first and he also has won three Grammy awards. The new album, which contains 22 tracks, is called Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana. In a video accompanying the Bad Bunny song there is a man riding a horse running quickly through a field. Perhaps that was a nod to Arozarena in January 2021 posting a video of himself racing a horse.• • •Sign up for the Sports Today newsletter to get daily updates on the Bucs, Rays, Lightning and college football across Florida. 4:: John Wick Chapter 4’s post-credits scene keeps the action rolling

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 24.03.2023 · 08:06:51 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· John Wick is back for another life-or-death battle in his biggest (and longest) movie yet. But if you stick around for all of John Wick: Chapter 4’s nearly 170 minutes, at least you’ll get a small extra reward at the end. The latest entry in the series about the assassin who just wants to hang up his pistols and live his life in peace does have a scene at the end of the credits. It isn’t long, and it isn’t completely critical to the plot, but it’s thematically relevant, co-writers Michael Finch and Shay Hatten told Polygon in a recent interview. It’s also pretty cool. Either way is enough reason to stick around. But if you can’t, or you’d just like a little explanation, here’s what happens in John Wick: Chapter 4’s post-credits scene.[Ed. note: This story contains spoilers for all of John Wick: Chapter 4, both before and after the credits.]John Wick: Chapter 4 ends on a solemn note with John’s funeral. (No, it isn’t clear whether he’s really dead.) But that isn’t all the movie has up its sleeve. After the credits, we see Caine (Donnie Yen) headed to visit his daughter with a bouquet of flowers. As he walks through a crowd, Akira (Rina Sawayama) walks toward him and unsheathes a blade, preparing to avenge the death of her father, Shimazu (Hiroyuki Sanada), who Caine killed earlier in the movie. Finch and Hatten told Polygon that her hunger for revenge is the central point of the scene.“One of the themes of this piece was to demonstrate the vertical reach of the Table,” Finch said. The High Table is the much-referenced shadowy organization that governs assassins in the John Wick movies. “Because of the events that happen in the Osaka Continental, she goes in full-force. What she doesn’t understand, and what we’re trying to demonstrate, is that you once you step into the Table, there is no stepping out. She was locked in once Caine says, [...] ‘I’ll be waiting for you.’ He knows that she’s going to come, because she’s a part of the Table. [...] She’s all in, she’s gonna go after Caine for revenge. Her story is John Wick story, in a lot of ways.”This cycle of vengeance and violence is critical to the themes of the John Wick series, Hatten said.“It shows the cyclical and cruel nature of this world, that once you get in there, it is impossible to get out,” Hatten said. “I think that’s why we empathize with John so much. No matter how many people he kills, you recognize, well, he didn’t really have a choice. He fell into this life, and now he’s just trying to get out and honor the memory of his wife. But it’s a really challenging thing to do.”While all of this plays into the themes of the series, including revenge and the idea that the High Table sits above even the most legendary assassins that serve under it, it’s also just an exciting little cap to the movie’s story — or maybe a tease of what’s to come for the series’ future. 5:: Andrew Lloyd Webber Updates Son’s Grave Condition Says He’s ‘Bravely

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 24.03.2023 · 06:13:10 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Andrew Lloyd Webber is thanking fans for their outpouring of support in the wake of his eldest son’s diagnosis with gastric cancer. The composer issued an Instagram video and revealed that his son, Nicholas, 43, has entered hospice care.“I want to thank you for the outpouring of messages of support for my son, Nick. He’s now been moved into a hospice and he’s battling away, ” he said in the video. “I think he’s over the worst of this first bout of pneumonia that he’s got as a result of his cancer, which is just ghastly. We’re all here and the family here has gathered around, and it was the right place for us all to be I think.“I’m going to go see Nick in a minute and I’m going to pass on all of the fantastic wishes that I’ve had for him from everywhere all around the world, ” he added. Webber, age 74, talked about his 43-year-old son’s illness earlier this month.“As my friends and family know, he has been fighting gastric cancer for the last 18 months and Nick is now hospitalized, ” Webber wrote at the time. “I, therefore, have not been able to attend the recent previews of Bad Cinderella and as things stand, I will not be able to cheer on its wonderful cast, crew and orchestra on opening night this Thursday. ”“We are all praying that Nick will turn the corner, ” Webber continued. “He is bravely fighting with his indomitable humor, but at the moment my place is with him and the family. ”Nicholas is a Grammy-nominated composer, scoring Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella original cast album in 2021. 6:: 4 years since the last LAUSD strike what’s different this time

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 24.03.2023 · 03:10:59 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· When LAUSD teachers went on strike in 2019 it was the first time such an action had taken place in 30 years. Now, just four years later, schools are shut down as teachers and service workers alike walk off the job. It begs the question: How did the district wind up here again? The answers require a close look at both the strike of 2019 and the “unprecedented, ” as they are oft referred to, events that have taken place since. It also requires understanding that the two strikes are very different. The 2019 strike was led solely by the 35, 000-member teachers’ union, United Teachers Los Angeles, in the name of smaller classes, less power to charter schools, less standardized testing and more nurses, among other issues. It lasted for six highly disruptive days and concluded with a deal reached between the union and then Superintendent Austin Beutner inside the walls of City Hall. This time around, the strike is not led by teachers, but by the service workers in SEIU Local 99. This 30, 000-member union represents bus drivers, custodians, cafeteria workers, instructional aides and special education assistants. The contract agreement reached at the end of the strike in 2019 did not include pay raise concessions from the district. The increases agreed upon were the same that the district had on the table prior to the strike — an immediate 3% pay raise and another 3% the following year — Beutner said in a recent interview. This time around pay raises are the central issue. SEIU is seeking a much heftier raise of 30% over time plus an additional pay bump for their lowest-paid members. UTLA members are joining them on the picket line in a show of solidarity.“There’s this genuine joy from SEIU that teachers are behind them, ” said history teacher Ron Bauer at a rally on Wednesday. “We went on strike in 2019, but they have been without a fair contract for far too long. ”As a result of the unions’ collective action, schools will be shut down for the duration of the strike. Back in 2019, the district was able to keep classrooms open by bringing in a wave of substitute teachers. This union solidarity is a powerful playing card for the service workers, who have historically struggled to organize around contract demands. This strike is the first time they have walked off the job since 1969, said SEIU Communications Director Blanca Gallegos.“The district would like to find a way to have things seem as normal as possible, in part because they want to have learning continuing… but also because in a negotiating stance they want to make it seem like they have the power to determine how things are moving forward, ” said John Rogers, an education professor at UCLA.“Without the teachers’ support, SEIU would not be able to shut things down in this clear and powerful fashion, ” he added. While there are different superintendents, UTLA presidents and demands at play in the two strikes, the lead-up to the 2019 and 2023 walkouts looked strikingly similar. 7:: Montebello moves to recover following strongest LA-area tornado in 40

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 23.03.2023 · 23:16:55 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Following the wreckage left behind by a rare tornado, the city of Montebello rallied Thursday, March 23, to marshal resources to aid those impacted by what scientist said was the strongest twister recorded in the Los Angeles area in 40 years. The city is working to collaborate with L. A. County’s emergency medical services agency, and was seeking funding and resources to assist businesses in repairing the damage, Alex Gillman, Montebello’s public information officer, confirmed Thursday. Montebello’s industrial district on Washington Boulevard and Vail Avenue was visited by the rare landspout tornado on Wednesday morning. The unwelcome guest tore through the roofing of buildings, lifting debris high overhead. Onlookers reported that the loud gusts lifted gas station signs, trash and tree limbs toward the mountains. One person at a private business suffered minor injuries. The National Weather Service confirmed that the tornado hit around 11:20 a. m. and estimated the tornado’s peak wind speed was 110 mph, and lasted for three minutes. That made it the strongest recorded in the Los Angeles area since 1983, the National Weather Service announced Thursday. Scientists measure the strength of tornadoes through what is called the Enhanced Fujita Scale or EF Scale. The scale became operational on Feb. 1, 2007, and is used to assign a tornado a ‘rating’ based on estimated wind speeds and related damage, according to the National Weather Service. Wednesday’s Montebello tornado was rated at EF1 on an EF Scale of 0 (“weak”) to 5 (“violent”). At 11 mph, it was at the upper end of EF1, just shy of “strong. ” An EF2 tornado has winds between111 and 136 mph. It was the strongest tornado recorded in the area since an F2 twister in March 1983. The last time an EF1 tornado occurred in the area was in January 1998 in Long Beach. An F0 tornado touched down in Inglewood in December 2014, according to NWS. Forecasters said Wednesday’s twister was 0. 42 miles long and was 50 yards wide, blanketing what is essentially a district of industrial buildings, which definitely felt the brunt. A list of effected businesses is being compiled, but of the 17 effected properties, 11 were red tagged as of this morning. According to Gillman, a task force has been created and met to expedite the permitting and construction activities that will take place on those damaged structures. According to residents, the streets around the epicenter were closed for several hours, and nearby homes and businesses lost power from Washington Boulevard east to Whittier Boulevard, and from Vail Avenue south to Greenwood Avenue. A gas line was severed, fire sprinklers broke, all the skylights shattered and a 5, 000-square-foot (465-square-meter) section of roof was “just gone, ” business owner, Michael Turner said. He added his polyester fiber business, Turner Fiberfill, could be closed for months. 8:: Jamie Lee Curtis Wins Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars 2023

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 13.03.2023 · 13:07:04 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· In perhaps the most unpredictable race of a season chock-full of them, Jamie Lee Curtis won the Oscar for best supporting actress for her role as Deirdre Beaubeirdre in Everything Everywhere All at Once, moments after her costar Ke Huy Quan won his own supporting-actor statue.“I know it looks like I’m standing up here by myself, but I’m not, I am hundreds of people,” a visibly emotional Curtis said, acknowledging the vast team behind her film. She even made mention of her long career as a scream queen and the moviegoers who supported her over the years, and emphasized, “We just won an Oscar together!”Curtis faced stiff competition from The Banshees of Inisherin’s Kerry Condon, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’s Angela Bassett, The Whale’s Hong Chau, and her Everything Everywhere All at Once costar Stephanie Hsu, and for weeks it was anyone’s guess who would emerge victorious. Curtis thanked her Everything Everywhere collaborators and emphasized the group effort that went into her victory: “We just won an Oscar!”Curtis mounted one of the more traditional yet unconventional campaigns. The industry vet made her way into the best-supporting-actress category for her comedic turn as Deirdre the IRS agent in Everything Everywhere All at Once, most likely buoyed by the outpouring of industry love for the best-picture front-runner. Once she nabbed the nomination, Curtis went to work, homing in on her decades-long career in Hollywood and also embracing her status as the “OG nepo baby,” highlighting her Hollywood lineage as the youngest daughter of Oscar nominees Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis in interviews and award speeches. At the SAG Awards, Curtis triumphed over the same lineup of competitors that she faced this evening in her category—the first major sign that she was a serious threat to take home Oscar gold. Still, it was anyone’s guess whether the onetime scream queen would triumph come Oscar night. Curtis invoked her nepo-baby status in her acceptance speech, mentioning her parents and their own Oscar nominations, and shouted to the heavens the news of her win. Despite her four decades in the industry, Everything Everywhere All at Once marks Curtis’s first Oscar nomination and win. 11:: Man United vs Southampton score highlights as Red Devils play to

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 12.03.2023 · 20:17:14 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Not all scoreless draws are equal, and that mindset was on full display at Old Trafford as Manchester United and Southampton shared the spoils after a 0-0 scoreline that doesn't come close to reflecting the consistent end-to-end action. The biggest talking point was Casemiro's straight red card in the 33rd minute, which after a VAR review reduced United to 10 men. The Brazilian's studs-up tackle went over the ball and onto the shins of Carlos Alcaraz, and while Anthony Taylor initially only showed yellow, he changed his decision after consulting the monitor. Before and after the disciplinary action, the match was a lively affair, and United were positive even after being reduced a man. Yet neither side could find an opener, as Theo Walcott was thwarted multiple times in front of goal and Gavin Bazunu made a significant number of quality saves. Additionally, each side struck the post more than once, as James Ward-Prowse grazed the crossbar with a free-kick as he looked to equal David Beckham's set-piece scoring record, and Bruno Fernandes saw a second-half effort agonisingly saved off the inside of the post. One sour note saw Alejandro Garnacho limp off late on following a tackle from Kyle Walker-Peters. He headed straight down the tunnel and was later seen leaving Old Trafford on crutches wearing a protective boot. United now sit 16 points back of leaders Arsenal, and look truly dead in the water for the Premier League title race. Instead, they will be looking over their shoulder, now focused on holding off Tottenham and Liverpool behind them. Southampton, meanwhile, still sit bottom of the league with 22 points, two back of safety. The Sporting News followed the match live, providing live score updates, highlights, and commentary throughout the buildup and action. 13:: Pope Francis begins year 10 as 'a bit of a Californian.' That means lots

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 12.03.2023 · 15:15:01 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Sitting in her family home in East Los Angeles, Rosa Manriquez kept her eyes on the TV screen as a flood of white smoke came pouring out of the roof of the Sistine Chapel 6, 300 miles away — a century-old signal that the cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church had chosen a new leader. Manriquez, now 70, is the mother of two lesbian daughters who supports female ordination to the priesthood. On that day, 10 years ago, she waited impatiently to see who would emerge from behind the red curtain on a Vatican balcony as the head of the church she both loved and struggled against.“So I see this man come out, and I think, ‘There’s something different about this guy, ’” she said. “And then I was like, ‘He’s Latino! Oh my God! ’”A decade later, Manriquez says she does not agree with everything Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the former archbishop of Buenos Aires now known as Pope Francis, has said and done. But like many Californians, she has come to respect and even love him.“I’m not declaring him a saint; I’m not into titles, ” she said. “But I think this is the first pope since John XXIII who, rather than saying, ‘Your holiness, ’ I would say, ‘My brother. ’”After Pope Benedict XVI resigned in February 2013, Paul Baumann, former editor of Commonweal Magazine, wrote that he hoped the next pontiff would be “a bit of a Californian” — sun-nier, more optimistic and more willing to engage with the modern world than his recent predecessors. It was a statement that turned out to be prophetic. In many ways, Pope Francis is a buzzy pontiff in the California style. And being a California anything means getting lots of love — and lots of derision and disdain. He has clashed with the state’s most powerful Catholic leaders — including José Gomez, archbishop of Los Angeles, the largest Catholic diocese in America, and Salvatore Cordileone, archbishop of San Francisco — on the issue of denying communion to political leaders who support abortion rights. But he is also the first pope to hail from Latin America, a point of pride and connection for many Catholics in a state that is roughly 40% Latino, and he has consistently refused to remain stuck in the hierarchical, traditionalist thinking that has characterized the church’s bureaucracy at the Vatican. He has prioritized the environment and the poor, struck a more welcoming tone with LGBTQ Catholics, and appointed more women to leadership roles in the Vatican than any pope before him — demonstrating a commitment to values many Californians share. It’s a stance that has gained him enmity.“The church is on the move, and some people don’t want to be on the move, ” said Father Allan Deck, a scholar of theology and Latino studies at Loyola Marymount University. “They want to remain where they are. ”Immediately after his election on March 13, 2013, it was clear the pope “from the end of the world” would be doing things a different way. 14:: World Baseball Classic score Kyle Schwarber Nolan Arenado power Team USA

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 12.03.2023 · 14:15:04 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Team USA, champions of the most recent World Baseball Classic in 2017, began their title defense Saturday night against Great Britain. (Here is the full WBC schedule. ) The Americans, heavy favorites thanks to a roster loaded with All-Stars, nevertheless fell behind early before taking the lead in the third inning. From there, the Americans were able to cruise to a 6-2 victory. It's been six years since the most recent WBC, so it's worth rehashing the basics before delving into more details about Team USA's win. The main points of emphasis are that the 20 teams are split into four five-team pools; the teams in each pool will play one another once apiece, with the top two teams advancing to the next round; from there, the WBC then amounts to an eight-team, single-elimination tournament to determine the champion. Now, with that out of the way, you can scroll below to find three things to know from Team USA's opening victory, as well as CBS Sports' live blog coverage. If Team USA is to repeat as WBC champions, then that title will likely be credited to an outstanding lineup. Imagine how surprising it was, then, to see the Americans fail to plate a run through the first two innings against Vance Worley, a former big-league pitcher who had struggled in a second-division independent league last season. Team USA's bats started to come alive in the third inning, when Nolan Arenado tied the game on a double that scored his St. Louis Cardinals teammate Paul Goldschmidt. Arenado himself then scored on a line-drive single from Houston Astros outfielder Kyle Tucker, giving the Americans a 2-1 lead. Kyle Schwarber would extend their advantage an inning later, launching a three-run home-run to make it 5-1. Arenado would strike again in the sixth, doubling again to give the Americans a 6-1 edge. Great Britain would get a run back in the seventh, but it didn't matter. The Americans had a firm enough grasp on the lead to make it count. Adam Wainwright, the longtime St. Louis Cardinals ace, received the nod in Saturday's game. Unfortunately, he scuffled early. Great Britain's second batter of the night, Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Trayce Thompson, launched a solo home run to put them ahead 1-0 in the early stages:Wainwright was far from perfect after that, but he finished his night having allowed just that one run over four innings. He yielded five hits and a walk, and struck out just four batters on 49 pitches. Still, Cardinals fans in particular have reason to be concerned -- his fastball averaged 85 mph, or three full ticks below his average from last season. The rest of the USA pitching staff had a better night overall. Tampa Bay Rays reliever Jason Adam threw a perfect frame, and Colorado Rockies left-hander Kyle Freeland held Great Britain to a run over two innings of work and the Pirates' David Bednar closed it out. The Americans will reconvene on Sunday night for a 10 p. m. first pitch against Mexico. 15:: Hawaii Daylight Saving Failed Now US Seeks To Join Hawaii

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 12.03.2023 · 13:12:58 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· While most of you will go to Daylight Saving Time (DST) this weekend, Hawaii will not. Hawaii has never observed daylight saving time under the Uniform Time Act. Breaking news: Eruption “Likely Imminent” After Kilauea Volcano Stopped Briefly. Hawaii opted out of Daylight Saving Time 50+ years ago. Having said no to DST a half-century ago, Hawaii is still waiting for the rest of the county and the rest of the world to eliminate this practice of changing time. Hawaii once tried DST back in 1933, but only for three weeks. On April 26, 1933, the Territorial Legislature passed a bill that placed Hawaii on DST from the last Sunday of April all the way to September’s last Sunday. On May 21, 1933, three weeks after passing the law, the law was revoked. It was in effect again during World War II, when it was called Hawaiian War Time. Hawaii officially opted out of the Uniform Time Act in 1967. Until this fall, Hawaii will be 3 hours earlier than the west coast. And the east coast will be 6 hours later than Hawaii. Mountain states are 4 hours later, and central states are 5 hours. Question: Why has Hawaii never adopted Daylight Savings Time? Answer: First and foremost, Hawaii’s sunrise and sunset times do not vary much. Being much further south than any of the mainland states and at a latitude close to Mexico City, there’s no significant advantage to daylight savings in Hawaii. The concept of daylight savings was, in theory, that it adjusts the time to make use of available natural light. With Hawaii near the equator, sunrise and sunset time don’t vary nearly as much as is the case further to the north. Read on as to whether this theory even holds water. The other U. S. locations and territories that do not have daylight savings are:Arizona (most of the state)American SamoaGuamNorthern Mariana IslandsPuerto RicoUnited States Virgin IslandsExcept for Arizona, the above locations are in a similar situation to Hawaii in terms of latitude. Arizona unsuccessfully tried daylight savings in the 1960s before opting out. Why daylight savings? Daylight savings started in the U. S. more than one hundred years ago, in 1918, during World War I. While the stated reason was to benefit farmers and save fuel, it is now largely believed that it promoted retail shopping in the evenings with more light. It was also considered beneficial to health since, with longer days, people would spend more time with recreation and sports. After World War I, Daylight Saving Time was only observed in New York City. That is until 1942, when a national DST policy came into effect. In 1966 the Uniform Time Act said that the U. S. would observe six months of standard time and six months of daylight savings each year. States had to opt in or out, so cities and counties could no longer decide on DST. Arizona opted out. Since then, the U. S. has moved to the more extended observance of DST, which since 2005 has been eight months each year. 16:: Daylight Saving Time Begins Sunday. When to Set Your Clock Forward How

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 12.03.2023 · 06:17:29 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Most Americans, including Illinois residents, will shift their clocks ahead by an hour this weekend, signaling warmer temperatures and brighter days ahead. The official time change will take place at 2 a.m. Sunday, with clocks jumping forward to 3 a.m. in states that observe daylight saving time. Under provisions of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, which amended the Uniform Time Act of 1966, daylight saving time begins every year on the second Sunday in March. That time change will remain in effect until the first Sunday in November, under the law. The change will push sunset to nearly 7 p.m., a barrier that will be broken on St. Patrick’s Day next week, according to officials. While we'll see more hours of daylight, that'll come with a tradeoff - one less hour of sleep. Here's everything you need to know about DST, including its background, the controversy surrounding it and how to cope with losing some vital sleeping time. When does daylight saving time start? Under provisions of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, which amended the Uniform Time Act of 1966, daylight saving time will begin on the second Sunday in March, which in 2023 will fall on March 12. LocalThe time change will take place at 2 a.m. At that time, the clocks will jump directly to 3 a.m., differing from the autumn time change when clocks "fall back" to 1 a.m. upon the conclusion of daylight saving time. When does daylight saving time end? Daylight saving time will end at 2 a.m. on Nov. 5, 2023, in what is known as the annual "fall back."What is daylight saving time? Daylight saving time is a changing of the clocks that typically begins in spring and ends in fall in what is often referred to as "spring forward" and "fall back."Under the conditions of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, daylight saving time starts on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November. On those days, clocks either shift forward or backward one hour. But it wasn't always that way. Clocks used to spring ahead on the first Sunday in April and remained that way until the final Sunday in October, but a change was put in place in part to allow children to trick-or-treat in more daylight. In the United States, daylight saving time lasts for a total of 34 weeks, running from early-to-mid March to the beginning of November in states that observe it. Some people like to credit Benjamin Franklin as the inventor of daylight saving time when he wrote in a 1784 essay about saving candles and saying, "Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise." But that was meant more as satire than a serious consideration. Germany was the first to adopt daylight saving time on May 1, 1916, during World War I as a way to conserve fuel. The rest of Europe followed soon after. The United States didn't adopt daylight saving time until March 19, 1918. It was unpopular and abolished after World War I. On Feb. 17:: Ukraine rebounds from Russian barrage restores power

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 12.03.2023 · 00:15:20 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· By Karl Ritter and Mstyslav Chernov | Associated PressKYIV, Ukraine — Ukraine’s capital had most of its power supply restored Friday, officials said, as the country again responded swiftly and defiantly to the latest Russian missile and drone barrage targeting critical infrastructure. In what has become a familiar Russian tactic since early October, the Kremlin’s forces struck Ukraine from afar Thursday while the ground battles in the country’s east largely remained mired in a grinding stalemate. The apparent aim of attacking power stations and other infrastructure is to weaken Ukraine’s resolve and compel the Ukrainian government to negotiate peace on Moscow’s terms. Ukrainian authorities scrambled to counter the consequences of the latest bombardment, part of a recurring cycle of urban smash-and-repair that has brought little change in the course of the war, which recently entered its second year. The Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank, said in an assessment that “these missile strikes will not undermine Ukraine’s will or improve Russia’s positions on the front lines. ”Ukrainian military analyst Oleh Zhdanov said the Russians are striking civilian infrastructure, because they can’t efficiently target Ukrainian military assets.“The Russians lack data about the location of Ukrainian troops and weapons, so they are targeting civilian infrastructure and using the same old methods of attacking civilians to sow fear and panic in the society, ” he said. “Ukraine has survived the winter and Russia’s strikes on the energy system in the spring hardly make any sense. ”Power and water were restored in Kyiv, said Serhii Popko, the head of the city’s military administration. Popko said that about 30% of consumers in the capital remained without heating and that repair work was ongoing. Power supplies were fully restored in Ukraine’s southern Odesa region, private provider DTEK said Friday afternoon. Around 60% of households in the city of Kharkiv that were knocked off grid by Russia’s missile strikes on Thursday were also back online, authorities said, though significant damage remained in the Zhytomyr and Kharkiv regions in Ukraine’s northwest and northeast. In another sign of normality quickly returning, Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin made an unannounced visit to Kyiv on Friday. Marin accompanied President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and senior military officers at the funeral of one of Ukrain’e best-known fighters and commanders who was killed in fighting near the devastated eastern city of Bakhmut. The service for Dmytro Kotsiubailo, killed a few days earlier at the age of 27, was held at the cathedral of Kyiv’s St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery. Many of the thousands of mourners clutched flowers, and the crowd knelt in silence as Kotsiubailo’s coffin was carried out of the church toward Maidan Square. Zelenskyy and Marin also laid flowers at a nearby memorial to fallen Ukrainian soldiers.
