··· ··· ··· ··· Good Shepherd Episcopal Church | Dallas, TX | July 23rd, 2023 Sometime around AD 56, just over twenty years after the death and resurrection of Jesus, our faith’s greatest missionary decided to share the good news of Jesus with the people of Spain. Paul realized that the journey from Corinth to Spain would take him through Rome, the capital city of the empire and the home to house churches planted by Peter. He writes to them in advance of his visit, laying out clearly for them—and for us—his understanding of the Christian faith and the relationship between trusting God and receiving eternal life. The first three weeks of our new sermon series will look at Romans chapter 8, where Paul focuses on the tension between the old life of sin and the new joyful and grace-filled life shared by believers. Though the gospel offers liberation and transformation through the Holy Spirit, believers struggle with old patterns of life and thought and are left wondering whether the message of salvation is for them after all. The truth, Paul teaches, is that righteousness is not based on our own efforts but on Christ's perfect sacrifice. The real question for us is not whether we understand how faith plays out in every aspect of our lives or whether we can live out our faith perfectly. It is whether we are willing to open ourselves to looking at everything differently, whether we are willing to set our mind on spiritual things, and whether we truly trust that God’s will for our lives is better than what we could ever choose for ourselves and that God’s ways are the only ways that bring life and peace.
