Introduced diseases had a ruinous effect, and generations of men were lost to slavery. Those stolen included the highborn and knowledge keepers of Rapa Nui (Easter Island), leaving an all but irreversible cultural vacuum. There are stories of a powerful conflict between ideologies, as the tools of religion, literacy and forced governance overturned Polynesian ways of life. Interviews across Polynesia showcase people trying to revive their cultural ways and heritage, while dealing with the ongoing wounds of foreign influence. #history #documentary #historical #documentaries #samoa #tongan #hawaii #tahiti #nzd #nz #newzealand/media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="548" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="26669"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:Gn98DJNlFFQ/id> yt:videoId>Gn98DJNlFFQ/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UCFXH-iB4uMxuuXTFCGz6e8A/yt:channelId> title>Ardijah - Moonlighting (Official Music Video)/title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gn98DJNlFFQ"/> author> name>Samoa Media NZ/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFXH-iB4uMxuuXTFCGz6e8A/uri> /author> published>2023-08-25T07:26:51+00:00/published> updated>2024-03-13T07:30:07+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>Ardijah - Moonlighting (Official Music Video)/media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/Gn98DJNlFFQ?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i4.ytimg.com/vi/Gn98DJNlFFQ/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>In the decade before hip-hop became the distinctive voice of South Auckland, the Polynesian soul-funk of Ardijah was the most prominent and carried to a wider audience by the singles Give Me Your Number, Watching U and Time Makes a Wine from their platinum-selling 88 album Take a Chance. Helmed by multi-instrumentalist/writer/producer Ryan Monga and singer Betty-Anne, the band went to Australia where record company litigation prevented them from recording for three years. But they never stopped working there – and here when they returned five years later. This 19-song collection (with some new tracks and guests) picks up career highlights where classic Motown styles (Smokey, the Jackson 5) sit easily alongside tougher urban funk and seductive reggae grooves. And they always made a fine fist of covers (McCartney's Silly Love Songs went number 1, there's a soul-cruise through Midnight Train to Georgia among the new tracks) although Leo Sayer's Moonlighting sounds a little dated, as does the synth-sound in places. But the Polynesian influences (Pacific rhythms, ukulele) elevated them into their self-described “PolyFonk”. Here are new versions of Haere Mai and E Ipo alongside Polynesian Girl and their take on Somewhere Over the Rainbow (more recently made popular by the late Hawaiian singer Iz). Betty-Anne's soulful voice doesn't resort to Idol-like over-emoting, and this collection reminds you what an important, influential band they were. And remain. iTunes. : https://music.apple.com/us/album/journey-aereanga/1668925318 #officialvideo #ardijah #nzmusic #nzmusician #aotearoa #nz #officialmusicvideo #music #musica #musicvideo #mĂșsica #musical #otara #southauckland @Ardijah/media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="273" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="12350"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:CzRoCt9c050/id> yt:videoId>CzRoCt9c050/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UCFXH-iB4uMxuuXTFCGz6e8A/yt:channelId> title>Sacred Footsteps of Polynesia (1993) 4K/title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzRoCt9c050"/> author> name>Samoa Media NZ/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFXH-iB4uMxuuXTFCGz6e8A/uri> /author> published>2023-08-14T07:46:36+00:00/published> updated>2024-03-14T20:13:33+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>Sacred Footsteps of Polynesia (1993) 4K/media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/CzRoCt9c050?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i4.ytimg.com/vi/CzRoCt9c050/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>Presenter Ramona Papali'i explores the Māori custom of returning the placenta to the land, the Samoan ceremony of betrothal, and the practice of traditional Samoan tattoo. The group included Samoans, Tongans, Cook Islanders, and a few Māori. Many were university students. Their headquarters were in Ponsonby, then the heart of the Auckland Pacific Island community. The Polynesian Panthers’ influence grew throughout the 1970s, and chapters were set up in South Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, and Sydney. They were inspired by the Black Panther Party and made direct comparisons between the oppression of African Americans in the United States and the discrimination and marginalisation faced by Polynesians in New Zealand. Their platform was based on freedom through self-determination. They began by organising homework centres, tenancy support groups, and community shows to build a reputation for respectability. The Polynesian Panthers’ campaign against the dawn raids by police looking for people whose presence in the country was illegal remains one of the most potent examples of their party’s platform in action. The spirit of the Panthers lives on in those who were part of the movement (‘Once a Panther always a Panther’). Melani Anae credits the group with empowering her and framing her values, especially an emphasis on education ‘as the tool that will lead us out of oppression and darkness and into the light.’ The Panther legacy continues with the Panthers’ Rap in Schools program, which began in the early 2000s. Arahanga, a television producer and director whose company Awa Films produces Māori Television series Songs From the Inside and Behind the Brush, found the experience emotional, but not without its humour as well. “To meet up with all the cast after 20 years and see where they are at in their lives has been really quite a privilege,” he says. “After 20 years everyone coming together was always going to be an emotional experience but the thing is it didn’t take long for the jokes to start. “It reaffirmed for me the belief that everybody felt something special on that film.” As well as reuniting the Heke family – Temuera Morrison (Jake Heke) , Rena Owen(Beth Heke) Mamaengaroa Pere (Grace Heke) Taungaroa Emile (Boogie Heke) Rachael Morris Tautau (Polly Heke), Joseph Kairau (Huata Heke) - other key players including Cliff Curtis and director Lee Tamahori also make an appearance. #temueramorrison #jakeheke #oncewerewarriors #movie #originalfilm #actionmovies #nz #māori #maori #documentary #history Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. When Tama sails off in search of a new life, he promises a tearful Mahana to return for her someday. Tama's journey leads him to Johnny Lingo, a wealthy trader who makes Tama his apprentice and heir. The band scored two top ten hits in New Zealand in 1988, including the number-one single "Sweet Lovers", a cover of the Bill Withers song "We Could Be Sweet Lovers". The song spent six weeks at #1 in summer 1988 and was the highest-selling single in New Zealand in 1988. The follow-up single, "Waiting in the Sunshine", reached #6 in December of that year. At the New Zealand Music Awards 1988, the group won seven awards. However, the group broke up soon after the release of "Waiting in the Sunshine". Among the band's members was Pati Umaga, who went on to work in composition and music education at Whitireia Polytechnic, and who became an advocate for physical disability after a 2005 accident paralysed him. #sweetlover #samoamedia #newzealandmusic #newzealand @samoamedia #music #musicvideo #musica #musicsong #aotearoa #officialmusicvideo #officalvideo #song #official #musik #nz #nzmusic Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Novel by Albert Wendt. Samoan-born Albert Wendt was working as a teacher in Samoa when he wrote the autobiographical Sons for the Return Home, first published in 1973. Sons For The Return Home is the story of a cross-racial romance between a Samoan student at Auckland University, the son of migrant parents, and the daughter of a wealthy palagi family. Friends and family are not supportive, particularly when she becomes pregnant, although he proposes marriage. It was an instant bestseller and was later made into a successful movie. Albert Wendt was born in Apia, Samoa. Wendt's epic leaves of the Banyan Tree (1979) won the 1980 New Zealand Book Awards. He was appointed to the first chair in Pacific literature at the University of the South Pacific in Suva. In 1988, he took up a professorship of Pacific studies at the University of Auckland. In 1999, Wendt was visiting Professor of Asian and Pacific Studies at the University of Hawaii. In 2001, he was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to literature. In the 2013 Queen's Birthday Honour's he was appointed a member of the Order of New Zealand. #samoa #samoan #samoamedia #movie #originalfilm #movies #drama #history #film #documentary #nz Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Pepe is the son of a successful Samoan businessman who rejects his father's world and his Christianity. Although he becomes rebellious, anti-social, and engages in criminal activity, as well as being expelled from school, he manages to establish himself in business. However, when he gets his girlfriend pregnant, he takes on the responsibilities of a family. Through his close associate with half-cast dwarf, Tagata, he enters the supernatural realm of his traditional ways and begins to find some peace and meaning to his life. Flying Fox In A Freedom Tree, his second book, deals with another area of Samoan experience — with those people who remain in Samoa or who return to Samoa after living in New Zealand. In this collection of eight short stories and a novella, Wendt tells the story of these 'strangers in a strange land' that happens to be their own. In doing so, he provides a 'brilliant study of a traditional island community caught up in the rapid changes of the twentieth century'. #samoamedia #samoa @samoamedia #flyingfox #samoa #samoan #samoamedia #documentary #movie #originalfilm #officialmovie #movies Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. ··· ··· ··· ··· Looking back at Captain Cook and the devastating effects of foreign powers on Polynesia. #history #documentary #historical #documentaries #samoa #tongan #hawaii #tahiti #nzd #nz #newzealand

··· ··· ··· ··· In the decade before hip-hop became the distinctive voice of South Auckland, the Polynesian soul-funk of Ardijah was the most prominent and carried to a wider audience by the singles Give Me Your Number, Watching U and Time Makes a Wine from their platinum-selling 88 album Take a Chance. And remain. iTunes. : https://music.apple.com/us/album/journey-aereanga/1668925318 #officialvideo #ardijah #nzmusic #nzmusician #aotearoa #nz #officialmusicvideo #music #musica #musicvideo #música #musical #otara #southauckland @Ardijah

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 05.08.2023 · 00:40:36 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· The Polynesian Panther Party was founded in Auckland by six young Pacific Islanders: Paul Dapp, Will ’Ilolahia, Vaughan Sanft, Fred Schmidt, Nooroa Teavae and Eddie Williams. In recent years, this has led to a new three-point platform: #documentary #history #nz #samoa #polynesian #blackpanthers #māori #polynesianpanthers

Some of the cast and crew have remained working in film and television while others opted out of the business. The documentary's director and original cast member, Julian Arahanga (he plays eldest son Nig Heke in the film), set out to track down his film family for an emotional Heke whanau reunion. 01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 04.02.2023 · 04:03:53 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Novel by Albert Wendt. ··· ··· ··· ··· Britain's Joe Joyce walked through the best New Zealander Joseph Parker had to offer to knock out his rival in the 11th round of a thrilling fight in Manchester. The heavyweights went toe-to-toe in a back and forth contest before a stunning left hook landed flush on the chin of Parker. Joyce claimed the WBO interim heavyweight title with the biggest win of his career and now has his eyes set on challenging heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk in 2023. The Briton's step up in class had been debated all week after 14 pro fights against lower-level opponents, but he showed a granite chin to become the first man to stop Parker, a former world champion. "Joseph Parker, what afighter," Joyce said. "It was a tough fight. What a tough fight. I had to dig deep to get through the rounds. I really enjoyed it." #JosephParker #JoeJoyce #Boxing #samoamedia @samoamedia

22:: FULL FIGHT | Junior Fa v Lucas Browne (2022)

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 05.06.2022 · 08:42:09 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· New Zealand heavyweight boxer Junior Fa has been stunned in his return to the ring, knocked out in the first round by 43-year-old Lucas Browne at Marvel Stadium in Australia. Browne, who lost to Paul Gallen last year, was thought by many to be a spent force, and Fa was a heavy favourite to win his first fight since his defeat to Joseph Parker 16 months ago. Bookmakers had Browne as big as a $14-1 underdog to beat Fa, but he made everyone look foolish – Fa most of all. Fa barely got going, as Browne knocked him down early, with Fa looking shaky on his legs as Browne signalled for the referee to call the fight. Fa was allowed back to his feet but Browne was hunting the KO and landed a thumping right hand over Fa's ear, leaving the 32-year-old on the canvas after just 118 seconds. There was disbelief that the referee allowed Fa to continue after the original knockdown. "Extraordinary scenes, I can't believe it. One right hand and it is over," said former Australian boxer Barry Michael, who had questioned whether Browne was too old.. #JuniorFa #LucasBrown #samoamedia @samoamedia
