It was developed in the early to mid-2010s as a response to the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Like its rival, the aircraft is made with composite materials, though it doesn't use electric systems extensively like the 787 (the A350 uses bleed air, which generally takes the compressed air from the engines and uses it for cabin pressurization). As its moniker implies, the "eXtra Wide Body" of the A350 allows for 10-abreast seating, and the passengers have more headroom, larger overhead storage space, and wider windows when compared to its predecessor the A330 (and, by extension, the A330's re-engined variant the A330neo). Due to its size, the A350 does tend to be larger than even the largest 787 variant, and is more comparable to the larger variants of the A340 (also its predecessor, which it was designed to replace) and the Boeing 777 (which it also competes with). The moniker "eXtra Wide Body" is also given to the engines that power the Airbus A350 (Roll-Royce Trent XWB). This tune is based on a very early version of Highway Rush Rewritten that I had started back in September 2018, which would've been around two months after I took a non-constructive comment to heart about my original songs at the time. Under the name of "Highway Rush Mk.II," I set about redoing the song with completely different notes on Famicom using the VRC6 and only the noise and DPCM channels of the RP2A03 (pretty much the same setup as the original version of Highway Rush), before putting it in the backburner as a result of a little demotivation, and then remade it on YM2608 in 2020 using what remained of the original version of the song (I still have a WIP module of it as I recall overwriting the module to the final version of it at some point). I basically took whatever I was doing in that early version of Highway Rush Rewritten, and transformed it into something else entirely. This song serves as the sequel to my FM Towns tune Dreamliner. What is the ESFM? This appears to be a variation of the Yamaha YMF262/OPL3 by ESS Technology, which was used on their ESS AudioDrive cards. Compared to the various clones of the OPL3 from the 90s, ESS Technology seemed to have expanded the capabilities of their version. There are 72 oscillators, which are configured as 18 separate 4OP channels. There's also individual frequency controls and stereo masks on each operator, and you can freely configure which operator is the modulator and the carrier. In other words, the ESFM is basically an OPL3 on steroids. This isn't my first use of the ESFM, as I covered a song some months ago on this chip just to get a feel for its capabilities, and I was impressed. So, I decided to create an original tune to go all out with this chip's capabilities. I made a legit SNES cover of Stone Tower Temple from Zelda: Majora's Mask! This was one of the first songs I ever covered back in 2016 when I used DefleMask for the first time. I started by doing a "remix" of it using the YM2151+SegaPCM system (which I now consider to be "meh...") before doing a straight cover of it using the Sega Genesis system. I later deleted this cover after I agreed with someone that it didn't sound particularly great (what was I thinking in using Sonic MD brasses in place of the stringed instrument, Sonic 3 bongos, and PSG periodic noise in place of the oboe?), and remade it using OpenMPT. I originally considered this a "SNES cover" since I used samples from a soundfont, which had instruments from various SNES games (this was around the time when the SNES soundchip was often compared to other samplers such as the PAULA chip, and that it could be replicated using OpenMPT. In hindsight, the SNES audio system has quirks of its own that can't be replicated in OpenMPT. Heck, OpenMPT is never supposed be a SNES tracker). And now, I have finally made this into an actual SPC. I had initially set out making this into the style of A Link to the Past, only to find that the game's sample set lacks the necessary percussion samples. So, I took the bongo from Super Mario World, and the tambourine from MusicalMan's Samples of Insanity pack. In place of the oboe, I used what's supposed to be a tuba found in ALttP, and the wind effect (also from ALttP) from my OpenMPT cover was also kept (albeit being on only one channel this time and gradually being pitched up and down). As a result, many of the instruments for sure will cut out if this song were ever played in Mario Kart DS. It makes me wonder if the developers of Mario Kart DS had a hard time choosing any Bowser Castle tracks from the previous Mario Kart games before deciding on MKSC's Bowser Castle 2 in terms of picking a song where the instruments won't get interrupted. Still, MKDS's Choir Aah instrument has a lenghty attack in the sample itself, so I used the string instrument to help it out a bit (just like any MIDI cover of this song you've likely heard out there as no solo string sample is used in the original song itself). I also wonder if MK64's Bowser's Castle is underrated compared to the other Bowser Castle tracks. It only reappeared in Mario Kart Wii back in 2008, and hasn't reappeared in the future Mario Kart games since. There also doesn't seem to be much covers of this particular song as well (besides the various MIDI covers on VGMusic). If anything, MK64's Bowser's Castle is notable for having a Thwomp locked behind bars that appears to have a green coloration due to the lighting of where its located, and it so has the nickname of "Marty." I had actually wondered as a kid how the Thwomp ended up behind bars. I thought it be fun to cover another Mario Kart song in the style of Mario Kart DS, and this time, using the actual Nintendo DS system introduced in Furnace dev196! The steel drum trills were a pain to figure out, but I think I managed to get them sounding as close as possible to the original song thanks to a cover from TRHS that I referenced to help out with that part. I think of all beach themes in Mario Kart, N64 Koopa Troopa Beach might be my most favorite probably because of my own nostalgia for Mario Kart 64. As many of you might know, there is a track within Mario Kart DS that has the name of nokonoko_course. This is a scrapped beach track that appears to be a successor to MK64's Koopa Troopa Beach, which would be replaced with Cheep Cheep Beach in the final game, and this track is inaccessible without the use of Action Replay (which loads the course without textures, and the game crashes if you go out of bounds) or ROM Hacking (which one can restore the textures and fix the crashing when you go out of bounds). Cakewalk included the JV-1080 VST for free (likely licensed from Roland), and I really liked it instruments, in particular the power kit and the air flute. Unfortunately, I ran into an issue with ASIO, and no sound ever came out the program no matter what I did, so the project was shelved. I ended up deleting my Cakewalk account (which also meant losing access to the Cakewalk DAW itself) a little later. In the meantime, I remade Palace Ruins in the Nintendo Switch version of KORG Gadget in October 2020. It's 2024, and I now have the JV-1080 VST again along with SCVA (purchased through the Roland Cloud service). I decided to remake this song once again to closely match how I originally wanted the remake to sound back in 2020 (and perhaps make it as close as possible to my original vision of it back in 2019). Fortunately, I haven't had any audio issue with Reaper! Although I do have to limit myself to using three or less JV-1080 VSTs just so I don't end up killing my music machine.
