··· ··· ··· ··· The CWR Potato Project is dedicated to advancing the development of climate-change resilient potato varieties in specific target environments. This project involves collaboration among breeders, farmers, and partners to make joint decisions towards releasing and adopting these varieties by vulnerable farming communities. To achieve this goal, the project focuses on harnessing the valuable traits found in Crop Wild Relatives (CWR), which have the potential to sustain agriculture under changing climatic conditions. Potato breeding programs that address climate change face several challenges, including developing novel sources of resistance to late blight in response to pathogen variations and establishing stable resistance to bacterial wilt. Furthermore, the potato crop in the tropics and sub-tropics is increasingly threatened by heat and drought stress. The main objective of this seminar is to present the findings and challenges of using wild relatives of potatoes in breeding programs, with an emphasis on identifying genes of interest for responding to biotic and abiotic stresses.

··· ··· ··· ··· El proyecto se dedica a avanzar en el desarrollo de variedades de papas resistentes al cambio climático en entornos específicos. Este proyecto implica la colaboración entre mejoradores, agricultores y socios para tomar decisiones conjuntas hacia la liberación y adopción de variedades por comunidades agrícolas vulnerables. Para lograr este objetivo, el proyecto se centra en aprovechar los rasgos valiosos encontrados en los parientes silvestres de los cultivos (CWR), que tienen el potencial de sostener la agricultura bajo condiciones climáticas cambiantes. Los programas de mejoramiento abordan el cambio climático enfrentando varios desafíos, como desarrollar nuevas fuentes de resistencia al tizón tardío en respuesta a variaciones del patógeno y establecer resistencia estable a la marchitez bacteriana. Además, el cultivo de papas en los trópicos y subtrópicos se ve amenazado por el estrés por calor y sequía. El objetivo principal de este seminario es presentar los hallazgos y desafíos del uso de parientes silvestres de las papas en programas de mejoramiento, con énfasis en identificar genes de interés para responder a estreses bióticas y abióticas.
