The purpose of a colonoscopy is to examine the colon and rectum for abnormalities such as polyps, tumors or inflammation, aiding in the detection and prevention of colorectal cancer. And to do that, it's important your medical team has a clear view. Dr. Derek Ebner, a Mayo Clinic gastroenterologist, offers tips on how to make colonoscopy bowel prep, essentially a strong laxative, easier. ____________________________________________ FOR THE PUBLIC: More health and medical news on the Mayo Clinic News Network. https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/ FOR THE MEDIA ONLY: To access clean and NAT sound versions of this video on the Mayo Clinic News Network, register at https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/request-account/ Mayo Clinic: https://mayocl.in/3tNMAdF Like Mayo Clinic on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MayoClinic Follow Mayo Clinic on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/mayoclinic/ Follow Mayo Clinic on X, formerly Twitter: https://x.com/MayoClinic Follow Mayo Clinic on Threads: https://www.threads.net/@mayoclinic/media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="37" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="807"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:v9A6QeYVxYw/id> yt:videoId>v9A6QeYVxYw/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UC8fQzKHIhSoZeSq3bwQx4mw/yt:channelId> title>Mayo Clinic Minute - Keep your eyes and skin safe during the total solar eclipse/title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9A6QeYVxYw"/> author> name>Mayo Clinic/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8fQzKHIhSoZeSq3bwQx4mw/uri> /author> published>2024-03-27T14:07:29+00:00/published> updated>2024-03-28T20:37:57+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>Mayo Clinic Minute - Keep your eyes and skin safe during the total solar eclipse/media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/v9A6QeYVxYw?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i3.ytimg.com/vi/v9A6QeYVxYw/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>On April 8, 2024, North America will experience a total solar eclipse, stretching across parts of Mexico, the U.S. and Canada, with approximately 31.6 million people living in the path of totality. According to NASA, every contiguous state in the U.S., along with parts of Alaska and Hawaii, will witness at least a partial solar eclipse. Dr. Dawn Davis, a dermatologist at Mayo Clinic says with all eyes toward the sky, it's important to protect your eyes and your skin from UV light damage. You'll need eye protection with special-purpose solar filters for viewing and to take precautions to safeguard your skin from the sun's rays during long periods outside. And when it comes to protection, she says sunscreen is for the skin only – never for the eye itself. ____________________________________________ FOR THE PUBLIC: More health and medical news on the Mayo Clinic News Network. https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/ FOR THE MEDIA ONLY: To access clean and NAT sound versions of this video on the Mayo Clinic News Network, register at https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/request-account/ Mayo Clinic: https://mayocl.in/3tNMAdF Like Mayo Clinic on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MayoClinic Follow Mayo Clinic on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/mayoclinic/ Follow Mayo Clinic on X, formerly Twitter: https://x.com/MayoClinic Follow Mayo Clinic on Threads: https://www.threads.net/@mayoclinic/media:description> media:community> media:starRating count="28" average="5.00" min="1" max="5"/> media:statistics views="833"/> /media:community> /media:group> /entry> entry> id>yt:video:sAYgz66U4aQ/id> yt:videoId>sAYgz66U4aQ/yt:videoId> yt:channelId>UC8fQzKHIhSoZeSq3bwQx4mw/yt:channelId> title>The Deepest Cut - Mayo Clinic Cardiac Surgery Series - Episode 2 with Mayra Guerrero, M.D./title> link rel="alternate" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAYgz66U4aQ"/> author> name>Mayo Clinic/name> uri>https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8fQzKHIhSoZeSq3bwQx4mw/uri> /author> published>2024-03-26T14:00:25+00:00/published> updated>2024-03-27T23:40:04+00:00/updated> media:group> media:title>The Deepest Cut - Mayo Clinic Cardiac Surgery Series - Episode 2 with Mayra Guerrero, M.D./media:title> media:content url="https://www.youtube.com/v/sAYgz66U4aQ?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="390"/> media:thumbnail url="https://i4.ytimg.com/vi/sAYgz66U4aQ/hqdefault.jpg" width="480" height="360"/> media:description>In this Mayo Clinic Cardiac Surgery Equity, Inclusion and Diversity (EID) video series, our goal is to get beyond the surface and understand how background, culture and hardship has shaped individuals as medical professionals and leaders. A parastomal hernia is a large defect in the abdominal wall. Often, things that shouldn’t go in there, do, such as your small intestine. We have vast experience seeing these patients and operating on them. Where most institutions do just a handful of robotic parastomal hernia repairs, just in the last two years, we've done over a hundred. ··· ··· ··· ··· On April 8, 2024, North America will experience a total solar eclipse, stretching across parts of Mexico, the U.S. and Canada, with approximately 31.6 million people living in the path of totality. ____________________________________________ FOR THE PUBLIC: More health and medical news on the Mayo Clinic News Network. https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/ FOR THE MEDIA ONLY: To access clean and NAT sound versions of this video on the Mayo Clinic News Network, register at https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/request-account/ Mayo Clinic: https://mayocl.in/3tNMAdF Like Mayo Clinic on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MayoClinic Follow Mayo Clinic on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/mayoclinic/ Follow Mayo Clinic on X, formerly Twitter: https://x.com/MayoClinic Follow Mayo Clinic on Threads: https://www.threads.net/@mayoclinic

15:: Mayo Clinic Minute - The difference in brain aneurysms

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 18.03.2024 · 12:32:14 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Each year, nearly half a million people worldwide die from brain aneurysms. In the U.S., an estimated 6.7 million people have an unruptured brain aneurysm, which means about 1 in 50 people might have one. A brain aneurysm, also called a cerebral aneurysm, is a bulge or ballooning in a blood vessel in the brain. Dr. Chris Fox, a Mayo Clinic neurosurgeon, says there are two broad categories of aneurysms: ruptured aneurysms, which are neurosurgical emergencies, and unruptured aneurysms, where there is time to establish a treatment plan that may involve multiple options. ______________________________________ FOR THE PUBLIC: More health and medical news on the Mayo Clinic News Network. https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/ FOR THE MEDIA ONLY: To access clean and NAT sound versions of this video on the Mayo Clinic News Network, register at https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/request-account/ Mayo Clinic: https://mayocl.in/3tNMAdF Like Mayo Clinic on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MayoClinic Follow Mayo Clinic on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/mayoclinic/ Follow Mayo Clinic on X, formerly Twitter: https://x.com/MayoClinic Follow Mayo Clinic on Threads: https://www.threads.net/@mayoclinic

25:: Mayo Clinic expert explains why a change is needed when talking about dementia

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 27.10.2023 · 16:24:20 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· One of the challenges in addressing Alzheimer's disease, dementia, cognitive impairment and aging is not related to the conditions themselves but rather the terminology. That’s according to Dr. Ronald Petersen, director of the Mayo Clinic Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, who suggests a new framework for dementia nomenclature is needed. Inconsistent use of terms such as Alzheimer's disease and dementia has compromised progress in clinical care, research and development of therapeutics. Dementia-associated stigma further contributes to inconsistent and imprecise language. "We sometimes use these terms inconsistently. That confuses us as scientists, and clinicians. It confuses our patients and our families. So we decided to take a look at that whole issue and see if we could understand the problem, and then make some recommendations," says Dr. Petersen. In a recently published paper authored by Dr. Petersen, the Advisory Council on Alzheimer's Research, Care, and Services of the National Plan to Address Alzheimer's Disease authorized a committee to help bring consistency to the use of the terms. What's the difference between Alzheimer's disease and dementia? "Dementia is a clinical syndrome, which means that it has a set of clinical features of the disease. Alzheimer's disease, though, implies that there's an underlying biological cause of the dementia. Often we get these two terms confused," says Dr. Petersen. ____________________________________________ FOR THE PUBLIC: More health and medical news on the Mayo Clinic News Network. https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/ FOR THE MEDIA ONLY: Register at https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/re... to access clean and nat sound versions of this video on the Mayo Clinic News Network. https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/ Mayo Clinic https://mayocl.in/3tNMAdF Follow Mayo Clinic on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mayoclinic/ Like Mayo Clinic on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ Follow Mayo Clinic on Twitter: https://twitter.com/MayoClinic

27:: Mayo Clinic Minute: Halloween candy strategies

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 26.10.2023 · 16:48:19 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Halloween is when kids wear their favorite costumes and go trick-or-treating for candy. Kids might bring home a bucketful of sugary treats, but it doesn't mean they must eat it all.   Dr. Angela Mattke, a pediatrician with Mayo Clinic Children’s Center,, says there are ways to reduce the sugar without removing the fun. She offers strategies to keep Halloween fun while cutting down the sugar. You can hear the excitement of Halloween in their voices as kids dress up in their favorite costumes with the hopes of collecting a bounty of candy. Now, what to do with all that sugar? Dr. Angela Mattke says to set a limit, then put the candy away so it is not easily accessible. And help avoid an extra dental visit by encouraging good oral hygiene. And, along with keeping a few pieces, Dr. Mattke says consider having kids donate the rest of the candy.

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 25.10.2023 · 20:36:00 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Megan Wasson, a Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgeon at Mayo Clinic - Phoenix, Arizona, specializing in endometriosis. She is performing surgery on a 36-year-old female that presented to clinic with pain during her menstrual cycles, that had been going on during most of life. Upon examination, her uterus was very fixed in her pelvis, which was consistent of a “frozen pelvis,” which heightened suspicion for deep infiltrating endometriosis. To further evaluate, Mayo Clinic’s Radiology team, which included Dr. Scott Young, an Endometriosis radiologist, performed a deep pelvic ultrasound, which showed extensive disease within her pelvis. With this finding, we were suspicious that she likely had significant involvement of her rectosigmoid colon, as well as potential involvement of her right ureter. The plan for surgery was to have the Urology team place stents to allow for identification of the ureters followed by hysterectomy and a segmental resection of her sigmoid colon. 43:: Hydration in the heat

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 21.06.2023 · 15:10:40 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, reports that May 2023 was the third warmest May in 174 years. And it looks like June is following suit. The National Weather Service is forecasting very warm temperatures across much of the country this week, especially across the south. Working or playing in heat like this can be dangerous. Dr. Steven Maher, an emergency medicine specialist at Mayo Clinic, has this top tip if you have to be out in the heat: "I can't stress enough hydration; they should continually be hydrating. And, you know, they should drink lots of water, plenty of it. And once they get into the second or third bottle of water, they can start adding in something like an electrolyte drink just to like the second or third bottle of water, they can start adding in something like an electrolyte drink just to kind of keep the electrolytes up as well because you lose salts and water." Heat illness begins with heat exhaustion when you might begin to feel nauseous, tired, dried out and thirsty.  If you don't cool down and hydrate, you can advance to heat stroke. "When you get into heat stroke, your core body temperature rises, oftentimes over 40 degrees centigrade, and you get confusion and multiorgan dysfunction, and that's a very bad place to be. We don't want people to get to that extreme," says Dr. Maher. If you notice someone struggling, Dr. Maher says, you want to remove the outer layers of clothing and, if possible, put ice packs in the person's armpits or the groin. You can also spray a person with tepid water.  If available, position a fan to circulate the air.  This can also help cool the person off.

58:: Mayo Clinic Minute: Testicular cancer is highly treatable

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 14.06.2023 · 14:47:49 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· June is Men's Health Month. It's an opportunity to recognize the signs and symptoms of testicular cancer. The disease is not common. Just 1 in 250 men will develop testicular cancer at some point in their lifetime, according to the American Cancer Society. Most of those cases are in young and middle-aged men. And usually the cancer is highly treatable. Testicular cancer is a relatively rare disease that occurs predominantly in young men, with a second peak later in life. It's most often diagnosed when a man feels a lump or swelling. Treatment is often only surgery to remove the cancerous testicle, with observation. But, in advanced cases, it can include chemotherapy, radiation or more complex additional surgeries. The biggest hurdle to getting that cure is fear and not seeking medical help as soon as you notice something wrong.

59:: Mayo Clinic Minute: Where is the kidney stone belt?

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 13.06.2023 · 18:19:23 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Dehydration in hot climates, combined with certain diets, are increasing risks that can result in kidney stones. Dr. Ivan Porter II, a Mayo Clinic nephrologist, describes intense weather areas, such as the South and Southwest, as the kidney stone belt. This is where research shows kidney stones are more prevalent. For the safety of its patients, staff and visitors, Mayo Clinic has strict masking policies in place. Anyone shown without a mask was recorded prior to COVID-19 or recorded in an area not designated for patient care, where social distancing and other safety protocols were followed.

60:: Addressing cancer concerns in the LGBTQ+ community

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 13.06.2023 · 12:07:32 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· During June, many communities around the U.S. and the world celebrate and raise awareness of the LGBTQ+ community's accomplishments and the ongoing fight for equality and acceptance. The LGBTQ+ community faces increased cancer concerns. Stigma and discrimination create barriers to health care, placing the LGBTQ+ community at heightened risk for certain forms of cancer. Being aware of cancer risks and finding ways to overcome these challenges can be lifesaving. Mayo Clinic's Dr. Jewel Kling says there are health disparities the LGBTQ+ community face that do not have to do with identity or sexual orientation.
