··· ··· ··· ··· Reposting my video presentation of RVW's Eighth Symphony. The original upload has been spoiled by advertisements added by Youtube. I hope this repost will remain uninterrupted for at least a few weeks. (The symphony was composed between 1953 and 1955. Sir John Barbirolli, its dedicatee, conducted the Hallé Orchestra in the premiere at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester on 2 May 1956. It is the shortest of the composer's nine symphonies.)

··· ··· ··· ··· On this day five years ago (also Friday 13th) Islamist terrorists attacked the Bataclan Theatre in Paris and other sites in the city, including the Stade de France. The attackers killed 130 people, 90 of them at the Bataclan theatre. Another 416 people were wounded, almost 100 seriously.[ Seven of the attackers were also killed. The attacks were the deadliest in France since the Second World War. I made this short video the day after the attacks. I'm reposting it to mark this and all the other terrorist atrocities that have happened since, in France, the UK and everwhere.

14:: Ralph Vaughan Williams: Symphony No 8

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 04.09.2015 · 13:49:15 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Sir Mark Elder conducts the Halle Orchestra on a CD from the orchestra's own label. 1. Fantasia 0:00 2. Scherzo 11:00 3. Cavatina 14:48 4. Toccata 24:01 RVW's Eighth Symphony in D minor was written between 1953 and 1955, when the composer was in his early eighties. It is dedicated to Sir John Barbirolli, who gave the first performance. The symphony is the shortest of all the nine symphonies and, perhaps, the most varied in mood. It is remarkably inventive, especially in the composer's experiments in sonority. Not only does he use a much-expanded percussion section, but the two central movements use only the wind section and string section respectively.

15:: Patrick Hadley: The Lynn Apprentice

01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 21.06.2015 · 21:41:01 ··· ···
··· ··· ··· ··· Best known for his Symphonic Ballad, "The Trees so High", Hadley was Professor of Music at Cambridge University and had been a pupil of Ralph Vaughan Williams at the Royal College of Music. His cantata "Fen and Flood" was inspired by the devastating events of January 31st 1953 when a combination of spring tides and a hurricane force wind created a 'perfect storm', which resulted in devastating floods along the East cost of England, before moving on to mainland europe and the low countries. This short extract from the cantata is a setting of a traditional song collected by Vaughan Williams in 1905 from Lynn Fisherman James Carter (shown on the icon for this video). The paintings used in this video begin with a view of King's Lynn by Walter Dexter, followed by old pictures of Lynn, including an 1860 view of St James' Workhouse by Henry Bains. Other paintings are by marine artists Frank Brangwyn and Montague Dawson. "Fen and Flood" comes from an Albion Records disc. Full details of the performers are given on the video.
