Mark Aaron James (co-creator of the "Aquaman's Lament" song, the one in the last machinima video I made) wants to get people making videos for his new album "Play Harder", and he has a proposition for video creators who want to go viral together. It's a pretty cool deal for anyone who wants to work with a songwriter who's excited about partnering with creative video makers, and I told him I'd post his video in my channel so that everyone who was interested in what I did could have a chance to do it themselves.
Check out http://markaaronjames.wix.com/goviraltogether for more details.
I am Mike "Spiff" Booth, and I approve this message. :)/media:description>

This video was made for the Blizzcon 2010 machinima contest. The contest rules stated that all entries must be three minutes or less in length. However, "Aquaman's Lament" is 3:47. Luckily, Mark Aaron James is really cool, and he agreed to let me edit his song down to fit the contest's guidelines.
Unfortunately, I couldn't turn Mark's heroic sacrifice into a win, because the video didn't even make it to the finals. I guess that means I'll have to learn what all these buttons in Adobe After Effects do after all...
You can purchase the full length version of this song on iTunes.
The song at the end of the video is "This Song Would Be Better", another great song by Mark Aaron James./media:description>

media:description>Some of you on the Internets seem to prefer the version of this song with Jonathan Coulton singing rather than GLaDOS. We here at Spiffworld aim to please.
This song was written for the popular computer game Portal by Valve Software. In Portal, players solve a series of puzzles using an experimental portal-shooting gun, while a slightly unhinged computer AI named GLaDOS spurs them on with promises of cake (which may or may not be a lie). The song is sung at the end of the game by GLaDOS, whom (spoiler alert) players thought they'd killed in the game's climax.
While this is easily the most requested song that people have asked me to make a video for, I figured it would never happen. The song is so perfectly suited for GLaDOS and Portal that I couldn't imagine it ever making sense in WoW.
But then I thought, who else would sing a song gloating about being still alive no matter how you tried to kill him. And then it all fell into place...
Not all of the shots in this video are mine. Some come from the in-game Wrathgate cutscene, and some from the Patch 3.3 trailer, both made by the talented team at Blizzard. I know it's not exactly kosher to use someone else's video in your video (especially without asking), but their stuff fit so perfectly and there was no way I was going to be able to get those shots myself, that I figured I'd go for it and pray no one got too mad.
Special thanks to Haley Booth, my co-creative director on this project.
The song at the end of the video is Jonathan Coulton's soft rock cover of Sir Mix-a-lot's "Baby Got Back"./media:description>

media:description>When Jonathan Coulton debuted this song at a concert in Chicago, he told the audience he wanted to make a happy song, so he thought he'd make it about sunshine and blue skies and call it "Blue Sunny Day". But then he noticed that the word "blue" could have another meaning...
He wondered who would be "blue" about a sunny day. Vampires, of course, but then he thought, no. What's more obvious than Jonathan Coulton writing another song about a sad and/or lonely monster?
But then he thought, "nah, it's totally a vampire".
However, if you listen closely to the lyrics, you'll see that there's actually nothing in there that says it's definitely about a vampire. It could just be a about a guy with Seasonal Affective Disorder or some other kind of depression.
But in my video, it's totally a vampire.
The song at the end of the video is "Re: Vos Cerveaux", Jonathan Coulton's french version of his "Re: Your Brains" (yes, that's really him singing in french)./media:description>

media:description>Spiff is teaming up with Machinima.com!
Im joining the Machinima.com network, which means that starting Dec. 13, 2009, youll be able to find all my videos at:
www.machinima.com/series/view&id=245
or their YouTube channel:
www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=FCE740C094DDCEAF
Theyve got all my vids, including First of May, which was banned by YouTube for being too inappropriate (they werent wrong -- its pretty inappropriate), though First of May isnt on their YouTube channel, for obvious reasons.
Theyll also have my new Spiffworld video for Jonathan Coultons great vampire song Blue Sunny Day. Yay!
Dont worry. Ill continue posting videos to my normal YouTube channel, so you dont have to do anything to continue receiving your normal, slow, irregular doses of Spiffworld videos. I know, I should post more often. I do what I can, man!
But if you enjoy my machinima videos, you should check out Machinima.com. Theyve got tons of machinima vids and funny series from lots of different video games (did you even know there were other games besides WoW? Its true!)
So check them out, and look for my new video Dec. 13, 2009. And thanks so much for watching and enjoying my videos.
The music for this video is another great piano rendition of a Jonathan Coulton song by BorbaSpinotti, this time for Skullcrusher Mountain.
You can find more of Borbas work at www.youtube.com/user/BorbaSpinotti, find more Jonathan Coulton music at www.jonathancoulton.com, and learn more about my videos at www.spiffworld.com./media:description>

media:description>Soterios Johnson is a real life radio personality on National Public Radio in New York. Every morning, Jonathan Coulton's radio alarm clock would bring him the smooth, polished tones of Johnson's voice, which got JoCo wondering what kind of secret double life a guy like Johnson must lead. Now we know.
For my video, I made Johnson a television news anchor instead of a radio host because a video about a guy talking into a microphone would be really boring.
Terry Gross is the host of NPR's wonderful show "Fresh Air". Does Ms. Gross lead a secret double life like Soterios Johnson? We don't know that she doesn't...
I'd like to thank my co-creative director Nick Bayhi for helping with many of the WoW news gags shown in the video.
I also want to give special thanks to the members of the real "Action Nine News" guild on the Whisperwind server. I'm not a member of their guild and they had no idea I was going to use their
guild's name and logo in a video. But it just fit so well, I had to use it. Hope you're not mad, guys. :)
The song at the end of the video is "Make You Cry", another great Jonathan Coulton song./media:description>

media:description>This song was an entry in Quick Stop Entertainment's "Masters of Song-Fu 2" songwriting contest. The challenge was simply to write a song about the moon. Oddly, Paul & Storm's entry was the only song about a werewolf, which you'd think would be a no-brainer in a moon song contest.
The song at the end of the video is "Frogger! The Frogger Musical", another great Paul & Storm song (coincidentally, a Song-Fu entry as well, for a different challenge).

media:description>As Jonathan Coulton wrote in his blog when he first released this song, there's something kind of sad about people who succeed so completely at becoming rich and famous that they stop existing on the same planet as the rest of us and start living in some other universe altogether. This song pokes fun at Tom Cruise for losing it publicly like he did, but it also seems to pity him a bit as well. Tom may be nuts, but he does make good action films, and it's not pleasant to see anyone go off the deep end like that.
Special thanks to my Co-Creative Director on this video, Nick Bayhi. Nick came up with most of the clever movie titles on the posters, as well as the idea for the video's ending. As Nick put it, "if he's so crazy and narcissistic, he should just marry himself". Genius!
(Note to Tom Cruise, if he's watching this -- hey Tom, we're just having fun playing with the stereotypes here. Nothing personal. No reason to get upset or sue anyone, right? So, you and me, we're still cool? Call me. :)
The song at the end of the video is "Over There", another great Jonathan Coulton song./media:description>

media:description>This song is an ode to suburban angst, which is where people move out to the suburbs to get big houses with big yards and driveways, and everything seems great until they begin to realize that there's nothing to do in the suburbs except go to strip malls and eat at chain restaurants and wait until the kids grow up and leave you.
This phenomenon is exemplified in the shop vac, a tool found in many suburban garages for sucking up leaves, dirt, nails, or whatever. When you first use a shop vac, it seems like the most awesome thing ever. But then you realize it's just a vaccum cleaner.
Please note: I (Spiff) have no problem with suburbs. I've lived in them all my life, and as near as I can tell, my soul hasn't been drained by the experience. But then, how would I be able to tell
if it had... ?
The song at the end of the video is "A Talk With George", another great Jonathan Coulton song./media:description>

media:description>Just in time for "Talk Like A Pirate Day" (Sept. 19, every year)
"The Captain's Wife's Lament" is Paul and Storm's closing song for their live act. They get everyone
into the action by having the audience call out the "arrrs" at the appropriate (and sometimes inappropriate) times. It's a great show.
Think you know about pirates? See if you can answer these piratical riddles you're likely to hear at a Paul and Storm concert:
What is a pirate's favorite crime?
What kind of socks do pirates wear?
What's a pirate's favorite droid?
What's a pirate's favorite half of a 1960s folk singing duo?
What's a pirate's favorite restaurant?
(answers are on my site, www.spiffworld.com)
The song at the end of the video is "Nugget Man", another great song by Paul & Storm./media:description>

media:description>This is my first non-Jonathan Coulton video, although it sounds like a Coulton song, right? It's not.
Paul and Storm and Jonathan Coulton were finalists in Quick Stop Entertainment's "Masters of Song-Fu" songwriting competition. The challenge was for each finalist to write a song that sounded like it had been written by the other finalist. "Live" was P&S's fabulous Coulton-esque entry.
The song was such a good match of Coulton's style in fact, I just had to tie this video in with one of my previous Coulton videos as well (you should have no trouble figuring out which one).
I want to give proper credit for some of the most important elements in this video -- I couldn't figure out a proper ending for the video, and it was my mom who suggested that Dr. Skullcrusher (or whatever his name is) die so The Bride could live (thanks Mom). Also, I was just going to have the video end with a big fight scene, but my wife came up with the great idea of The Bride and Igor wanting to bring Dr. Skullcrusher back to life with the dead villager's body parts (loved it).
The song at the end of the video is "Opening Band", another great Paul and Storm song./media:description>

media:description>The voices in this song are sampled from a Kentucky Fried Chicken fast-food training video Jonathan Coulton found online. Something about it struck him, and he turned it into a song.
This video was made for a Machinima.com UK video contest. However, since I don't live in the UK, I had to get my buddy Kerrin from the "Jonathan Coulton Project" (http://jocopro.libsyn.com), who does live in the UK, to enter the video in the contest instead. WE WON!
Be sure to check out Jonathan Coulton's Web site for lots more clever, creative songs like this one.
The song at the end of the video is "Better", another great Jonathan Coulton song./media:description>

media:description>This video won't make any sense unless you've seen Jonathan Coulton's original Flickr video. You can find it on his website, so go watch it now:
www.jonathancoulton.com/songdetails/Flickr
In 2005, Jonathan Coulton poked around on Flickr.com, found some photos he liked, and turned them into a song and video. It is purposely random. So this song already had a video and didn't need one from me. But I received an email from a fan named Kytyn encouraging me to make one anyway. She even helped by providing ideas for some of the shots (thanks Kytyn). It was a different kind of video than my others, so I figured I'd give it a shot./media:description>
