In the Jewish calendar, this means a celebration of the time that God delivered the children of Israel from Egyptian slavery by sending a plaque of death of the firstborn. In order to be spared from this, Moses instructed God’s people to slaughter an unblemished (perfect) lamb to put upon the doorpost, to protect the ones inside from the death angel:
