··· ··· ··· ··· Basically we're 8 years down the line and I still can't stop eating this dang yummy food😮‍💨🤌🏻 And yup I eat ice cream too! But only from reputed places, so here's the drill on how to eat everything yummy on your India trip and never get sick (i got sick from the food maybe 3-4 times total across all these years🙏): 1 ONLY eat at crowded places where Indians are also eating. I see first time tourists on Reddit posting threads on "being careful" and ending up in empty restaurants, with questionable food. That's not being safe! The food turnover in these restaurants, and hence the risk of something going bad, is way higher than even a crowded street food vendor. Always look for the crowds and the food will be fresh for sure. 2 Go vegetarian. Not from an activist pov but simply because most people who get sick, end up getting sick from meat dishes. I'm vegetarian anyways, but I do think this is one of the main reasons why I rarely got sick from the food. 3 Wash your hands, and use desinfectant right before you start eating. The amount of touching random stuff while travelling is way more than being at home. I know for sure I got sick at least twice because I simply didn't desinfect my hands before eating. Also keeping your nails short because of this reason is highly recommended, especially because a lot of Indian food is eaten with your hands. 4 Stick mostly to cooked HOT food. Yoghurt and bread are usually fine as "cold" foods, but salads or raw veggies would be a no go. Personally I'm not a salad person anyways, but if you are I'd only recommend it at 5* hotels (when the buffet is freshly served!) or if you're at a friends home and can see how it's prepared. 5 I eat PLENTY of ice cream, but only from big supermarkets/malls (because they can maintain continuous electricity and hence the ice cream doesn't melt into a pool of bacteria), or specialty shops like the classic Corner House In Bengaluru (must try!). ··· ··· ··· ··· There's no secret ingredient, because it's the same for every immigrant ever: 1 Have sufficient financial resources to last you at least a year, and bear all the expenses involved with visa application, housing, moving etc 2 Your skills should be complimentary to the economy of the country you're trying to live in. If you just wanna come to India and wait tables, uhm yeah there's at least 1+ billion Indians who can do that already. What do you bring to the table? 3 Make sure everything checks out with your visa (you're NOT allowed to work on a tourist/marriage visa in India for instance), your tax requirements, and make sure to read up on the laws of the country especially as a foreigner. 4 It's extremely hard work to build up a new life from scratch. In the end you have to believe it's worth all the sacrafices you're making by leaving your loved ones and the comfort of your home country. The biggest misconception I see is that people think it's particularly easy to be a foreigner in India, for financial reasons or because of 'white privilege'. Maybe that's my fault a bit. I don't like to complain, and have rarely shared how many doubts, pain, and lonelyness I felt along the way of building a new life in India. Trust me, it's quite proportional to all the joy that I share here, but the joy is something that I'm personally wired to always focus on. In the end I feel extremely privileged and honoured to live in India. ··· ··· ··· ··· When the city is so dreamy, you don't even have to romanticize your life🥰 Here's some pro tips to enjoy Mumbai best: 1 Head out early. And I mean EARLY early, like be at Gateway of India at 7am. There will be way less crowds, and Mumbai is still nice and cool to walk around. 2 South Bombay is fantastic for walking. So especially if you're here early, you can walk around and see the city wake up. Most breakfast sit down places will open up around 8/9am, and you can also go full 'dolce far niente' style (the art of doing nothing), while enjoying yummy food and watching the city come to life. 3 Colaba Causeway is a lovely market for shopping (one of my faves in India!) and opens around 10am. You'll probably last here for max 1-2 hours before the heat catches up with you. You'll know it's time for lunch and a nap. 4 Don't mess around in Mumbai heat in the afternoon, it's no joke. Go to your hotel and take a nap, so you'll be fresh to explore again after 4PM. I filmed a whole YouTube vlog on my new iPhone 15 Pro Max just to check the quality, and my oh my...Coming up soon! ··· ··· ··· ··· Say hi to Bubli! 🫧🦦🧿 Yup, this is how efficient Indo-Dutch alliances are lol Signed up for the 2in1 combo deal in major life events, obviously to beat all the uncles and aunties to the question "when are you having kids?" after marriage.🤭🤪 In all seriousness I didn’t get married because I’m preggers, and I’d honestly have 0 shame in saying that I did if that was the case. The reality is that we were actually already discussing our marriage in 2020, and also planned kids after that (as far as you can plan fertility). But obviously then covid hit, and then the second wave in 2021, and then some severe personal setbacks in 2022🫠. As you can imagine we were both fully done putting the most personal events in our life on hold for 3 years. Hence we went YOLO, and life was like “you know those things you’ve been wishing for all this time? There ‘ya go, all in one go!” lol. I’m seriously not shocked, or overwhelmed by this, because the one massive thing that all those years of setbacks taught me, was that when the wave of good fortune hits me again I’m going to fully enjoy the ride in whatever way possible🦦🙏🩷🧿. ··· ··· ··· ··· We met by chance for just a few hours in London, because a mutual friend saw we were both in the same city on socials. "Do you wanna meet up with my friend @sakshish ? She's in London now too", is the easiest introduction I've ever received to one of my best friends now. This was back in 2016. Sakshi, me, and another friend clicked the "famous Beatles crossing" picture, watched sunset from Primrose hill, and ended up in a random pub trying pub food for the first time. Whenever I returned to Mumbai, she welcomed me with open arms. Her lifestory is not mine to tell, but she's one of the strongest humans I've ever met. Whenever someone needs an example of an Indian warrior queen, she's the one I always highlight. Apparently the lenience towards trash hot spots is only reserved for selected countries (erm trash in Bali or Lloret de Mar excuse me?), but with India people feel entitled to throw any logic out of the window and label the whole country dirty, because they've been to Delhi and Varanasi🌝 Oh and no I'm haven't been "just to Goa" lol😂 I know Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore like the back of my hand, have travelled extensively across the country from the Himalayas to the exotic Lakshadweep. Aside from the Indian dna being quite entrepreneurial, having one of the largest home markets in the world, and being 3rd on the world list of most unicorns (billion dollar valued companies), there are a few things you have to take into account for running a business in India: 1 Each city kind of has its own specialisation. Mumbai is the finance capital, Delhi is the political capital, and Bengaluru is the start up capital. Of course it's not black and white, but the eco system of your industry matters to fascilitate your growth. 2 Networking is everything. Relationships, and personal referrals, are usually at the base of doing any business in India. 3 Foreign businesses are quite restricted in entering India. You need an Indian business partner to get things of the ground here (see point 2). 4 The industry you are in matters a LOT! Tech is quite modern, but there are plenty traditional industries which are still quite conservative to get into. Especially if you don't have points 2 and 3. ··· ··· ··· ··· Can we pls cancel concepts like 'cheapest country in the world', 'how to travel India for free', and 'seeking spirituality by renouncing material wealth'? Being a responsible tourist in 2023 means you also understand that coming to a reconstructing country means your tourism spends should contibute to the local economy. Obviously everyone has a budget, and that's cool. What's not cool is spending $50 on a meal in your home country, but bargaining about a $3 riksha ride in India. That's just plain wrong. Also India has a HUGE income disparity, and I love the fact that government bodies often step in to make sure even the lowest income classes still can afford certain things, like for instance ticket price capping for cinemas. And yes that means a lot of things can be extremely cheap if you're coming from a high income economy. However this doesn't mean that a low price always equals an environment that's best for you as a tourist. You don't have to book a luxury trip, but staying at the cheapest hotels is simply a place where you might get into trouble, nor are you contributing to the economy properly. You also really don't have to go full luxury, although I'd def recommend trying that once, but just be mindful about your spending and budget as a tourist in India. When things go wrong, it's usually because of culturally inappropriate behaviour or doing things that the locals would never even attempt. With that being said, here's the most basic advice I always give to my female friends who want to travel India solo: 1 Start in South India, like in Kochi The tourism is way less focussed on mass tourism. Hence the locals I feel are more invested in you having the best time ever. 2 Seriously pay for a safe place to stay and compare reviews on Booking, tripadvisor and google. I personally LOVED good homestays and guesthouses as a solo female traveller. Staying with a family feels safer than a budget hotel, or sometimes even a luxury hotel, as the family always keep an eye out for you. 3 Especially as a solo female traveller keep an eye on what the local women wear, do, and where they go. India is a conservative country when it comes to outfits, but I feel Indian ethnic wear is also more comfortable and pretty (looks GREAT in pictures!). If in certain areas you don't spot any women, you shouldn't be there either. One time I walked into a cafe full with only men, and literally immediately just walked out lol. Also at night if I wouldn't see any women in the streets (usually past 9-10PM), I'd return to my room too. Just really pay attention to what local women do and you should be good. 4 I also personally barely drink, and certainly never with people I've just met. Drugs, yes weed included, are illegal in India. Even if your "friends" say it's cool, it's really not. 5 This is going to sound like victim blaming, but just hear me out. When you're travelling alone, your safety is your responsibility. If someone makes you feel uncomfortable, or even try to touch you, feel free to go batshit crazy. Especially in a conservative country, the men certainly know what is and isn't appropriate but that won't stop everyone from shooting their shot (sadly). ··· ··· ··· ··· In the Netherlands most people thought I was either native Dutch, Turkish, Moroccan, or Spanish. Now in India I get told so much I could pass off for a Kashmiri or Punjabi girl. But here's my real background: I was born in Beograd, Serbia and grew up in Jajce, Bosnia. My mom is Serbian, my dad is Bosnian. Back when I was born the countries were still united in one large country called former Yugoslavia. But in the beginning of the '90's a massive civil war broke out. Suddenly, overnight, my parents became a "mixed marriage" and my brother & me "mixed blood"... I was 8 when we left everything behind, fleeing as refugees. With God's grace it took us a few months to reach the Netherland safely. My parents applied for refugee status, and struggled for 5 years to finally gain Dutch citizenship for us. In those 5 years we all learned Dutch, went from a 1 bedroom appartment to each having our own rooms, and my parents found new careers. It's one of the most forming years of my life, which taught me how to fight and survive in life. In 2015 I touched Indian soil for the first time, there was a strong sense of belonging in my heart. Don't ask me what it is, even I don't know. But I do know that India is home for me. My life is in India now, my parents are in the Netherlands and my brother lives in Hong Kong. I speak Serbian/Bosnian, Dutch, English, a bit of French, German and Hindi. Having such a scattered life across the globe has enriched me as a human. In short here's why overplanning will be your biggest problem, and a sure way to not have a good time in India: 1 India has it's own pace and timing. Things happen unexpectedly, and you have to have buffer free time to compensate for that. On top of that, sometimes the pace is lightening speed and sometimes a snails move. Leaving half of your itinerary open gives you a chance to adapt and adjust to the pace, because if you're expecting India to adjust to you you have a great sense of humour😂 2 India is so different than any other country in the world. The new scents, customs, foods etc will all wear you out in no time. You need time to process all the new things you see. If you don't plan that downtime, that's what's gonna get you overwhelmed in a jiffy. 3 Imagine the biggest food buffet you have ever seen. How does that usually end? Probably on the verge of gasping for air and a horizontal pose. Well India is one of the biggest buffets in the world for travel experiences. Except, here if you overindulge you're gonna get real cranky, with no patience, and just not making the most out of your time here. Pick less, enjoy more is the motto. Here's one of the reaseons that's not in the video👀 TBH I rarely mention spiritality in India because the topic usually attracts a lot of foreigners who need serious mental help, but instead depart on a "spiritual journey in India". However there's no denying spirituality is an intergral part of what makes India a unique place in the world. It's the birthplace of yoga & meditation, but also most people are religious which imho leads to far more good than bad things. It's this "working on your soul" that results in far more random acts of kindness, but also people who really can thrive in sometimes very tough conditions. Personally I did a yoga teacher training in 2015. As cliché as it sounds, it completely changed my life. I still meditate for an hour daily and practice yoga weekly. It's my safe space and a daily shower of sanity. Long flowy dresses not only protect you against sunburn, but they also look better in pictures. Only in luxury hotels and Mumbai would I recommend any shorts/short dresses (as a foreigner you're already "exotic", not dressing like the locals attracts a lot of unwanted attention). 2 Stay in your comfort zone. No need to go to the most remote corners of the country, or try some experiences that you don't feel clmfortable with. Don’t get extra adventurous if that makes you feel scared, because the adventure will find you anyway in India. Whenever my foreigner friends come to Indie I always make sure to pick experiences which are fun, but not way overboard for their comfort zone. My personal favourite biggest everyday adventure is still cruising theough Bengaluru with a riksha, I LOVE IT! 3 Book rickshas, flights and hotels through app to make sure you’re safe and pay a fair price. Haggling is a National sport in India, so if you enjoy it you can spend time and energy on that. Otherwise just stick to apps like Uber, Rapido, Namma Yatra, Booking, Skyscanner, Wego etc to book safe transport & accomodation at fair prices. ··· ··· ··· ··· Legend has it she had the DBC next, while mumbling ila through her tears😭 (This is a prank, pls don't cancel my life in 'luru my lovely Kannadigas 💛❤️🫶🏻) In case you're completely clueless what this is about: Most States in India have their own regional language, which is extremely dear to the local people as they want to preserve their mother tongue. For Karnataka, and hence Bengaluru, the local language is Kannada. After 5,5 years here I can definitely distinguish if someone is speaking Kannada or a different language, as I know the rhytm and melody of Kannada. Also I know ila (no), houdou (yes), and waste mad bedo because of @chillystudio series (my FAVE Kannada content creator). Like many immigrants and adults I love learning new languages, but building a new life abroad is extremely taxing. I not only shifted to Bengaluru, I shifted countries. Only immigrants understand how taxing this is and how much time/energy goes into figuring out daily life. I'm also very shy to speak a new language, like many adults. Kudos to everyone who learned Kannada, and thank you Kannadigas for being so kind to us gotilla's who haven't managed.
