This is a 'call and response' acappella performance by singers who are having fun with songs on a camping holiday. Forest Campers may have invented this unusual set of lyrics, developing a London theme that mentions the River Thames and a notorious drinking character named âSkang Eye Brownâ. Each verse features a solo line from the shantyman while everyone else replies with the short refrain of âWhiskey! Johnny!â and âWhiskey for me Johnnyâ.This provides a regular, heavy rhythm so the tune and tempo remain constant. Going back in time to days when human muscles were the only power source available aboard ship, new lyrics were probably made up on the spot as the sailors sang and hauled in the rigging. Some other shanties also provide two pulls of the rigging for each verse, as in âBlow the man down!" and "Hanging Johnny"./media:description>

This is a 'call and response' acappella performance by singers who are having fun with songs on a camping holiday. Forest Campers may have invented this unusual set of lyrics, developing a London theme that mentions the River Thames and a notorious drinking character named ‘Skang Eye Brown’. Each verse features a solo line from the shantyman while everyone else replies with the short refrain of “Whiskey! Johnny!” and “Whiskey for me Johnny”.This provides a regular, heavy rhythm so the tune and tempo remain constant. Going back in time to days when human muscles were the only power source available aboard ship, new lyrics were probably made up on the spot as the sailors sang and hauled in the rigging. Some other shanties also provide two pulls of the rigging for each verse, as in ‘Blow the man down!" and "Hanging Johnny".

In the Caribbean island of Haiti it appeared in the late nineteenth century as a poem and a folk song about the beautiful lady known as “Choucoune”. The language is French and the music is mérengue. Following the Calypso Craze of the 1950’s many versions in English began to appear. As Val Serrant reminds us, ‘Trinidad is the land of Calypso’…… Performed and Arranged - Dereck Rose. Liz explains that scores are not published and they just work out harmonies in rehearsal. The vocal harmonies are a combined effort between Heather (lower) and Liz (upper). Susan nearly always sings melody. Liz provides a gentle supporting accompaniment.
